“Warm n gr8 hospitality”
Reviewed January 7, 2013

We stayed here in sept n hence I got a good deal(off season). The overall experience was good. I loved the serenity n peaceful kumarakom. It's a hamlet surrounded by vembanad back waters. Go here only if u are looking for a quiet n lazy vacation. Vivanta by taj lived upto their brand. The management was warm n hospitable. They gave us complimentary cake. and while on our way back packed a boxful of complimentary sandwiches. I loved their lake view cottages. The lake has almost all the migratory birds. We got a free upgrade to their suite cottage. Simple loved the luxury of the suite villa. It has private pool. The resort offers small activities like fishing, fish, geese, rabbit feeding, kids activities, boating and boat ride in vembanad every evening. The resort is beautiful and close to nature.

Room Tip: Go for the lagoon facing cottage if u love nature n birds. Will be a treat to watch them right from...

I write this on the last night of our stay with the hotel at the end of our honeymoon. Having stayed with at the Vivanta by Taj in Kovalam we were open to options in Kumarakum but eventually chose this hotel knowing the group would be lovely; we have been blown away by the staff and experience!

On our first night here they kindly upgraded us to a beautiful villa which was well kept and exactly what we wanted. I do need to clarify from one or two previous comments that there are infact 3 restaurants and a jiva spa here... admittedly service at the pool bar was a little slow but the staff as amazing at doing the best they can with the tools given by the owners of the Taj chain. I feel that any negativity should be directed at 'head office' rather than the staff and management on site at this hotel (given they're doing an outstanding job!)

I will concede that the hotel could use a little TLC but equally highlight that the one of the many reasons to stay here is the 140 year incredible heritage, service and views! The staff were amazing and on our last night we were upgraded to one of the best rooms in the resort with a private pool which truly made our honeymoon!

Overall I cannot say enough to stress that whilst of course others are entitled to their opinion, my wife and I make a point of staying with the best hotels and groups in the world and whilst (as I have mentioned) this hotel could use a little updating in places... the fact remains that the staff and overall experience has been truly outstanding... thank you Taj!

This hotel is billed as 5 star - it is anything but - particularly compared to other hotels nearby such as Kumarakom Lake Resort and Coconut Lagoon.

Tiny open air restaurant at front of hotel near road, ten minute walk from beautiful lake, dirty tables and chairs and unclean minimum buffet.

Food generally poor and we were worried about getting bad tummies!

Christmas eve was a joke, slimey food, cheap table cloths and accessories, laughable entertainment - simply a basic Indian Hotel not up to the level of Taj in any way, shape or form.

Bedrooms basic and position on lake totally wasted by lack of facilities there.

Pool needs refurbishing as does spa, as in fact does nasty decor in reception.

All in all, an expensive hotel where we were truly sorry we were based over Christmas.

Give this hotel a wide berth, there are hundreds of better hotels in beautiful India.

My big issue was the food. It was the only place we stayed at in Kerala where I wasn't excited about the food. In fact one day we took a car into Kottayam to have a vegetarian " Saadiya " meal at a local restaurant because we didn't feel like eating in the hotel.
There were a few other niggles as well .. The evening cruise didn't leave on the one evening we tried it because " the waterfront weeds have suddenly become very thick " and the kids activities were very limited.
The staff tried hard and the rooms had a lot of character. The room we had backed onto a small pond and it was very serene sitting out on the back verandah.
It definitely wasn't a disaster, but I'd personally try a different resort if we visited Kumarakom again.

Vivanta by Taj..well the name says it all. I have stayed at Vivanta by Taj - Goa & Kovalam but this one is simply the best hotel for romance and family gateways. And Tripadvisor has justifiably given it a top rank for it. I stayed here with my wife on our honeymoon. We booked a Heritage Villa with Private Pool & Verandah. The villa was simply out of this world. When you have your private pool with Jacuzzi inside your villa, a bed nearby so that you can just relax there for a while after enjoying yourself to the limit in the pool, a vast verandah were you can unwind and read a book in peace or have your morning teas and all this overlooking a serene Vembanad lake and magical bird life of the Kumarakom sanctury....just priceless. I understand why 2 of our former prime ministers have visited this property and have stayed here in the same villas for relaxation.
For families, the resort offers n number of activities to keep you busy for the entire day, be it bird watching in Kumarakom sanctuary (which is practically next door) , fishing, pottery, sunrise and sunset boat rides on the lake, flying fox feeding shows, lighting diyas with local community women...just amazing. There were plenty of families there and they were having a ball. The resort also offers lots of privacy and seclusion to the couples as its a big big big property. You need a cycle to roam around.
Food is excellent. Ambiance at night is superb. Services are just out of this world.
Dont hesitate to splash that extra cash for this hotel..never even think if its a special occasion like your honeymoon. As even though this is an expensive resort..it pays you back every penny you spend here.

Room Tip: Heritage Villa with Private Plunge Pool & Verandah..You will feel like a royalty.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for your generous and vivid feedback of the resort.
We are glad we could provide you with a memorable experience. The resort is a very pristine experience unlike what hotels generally provide. The amazing sense of relaxation one feels from an experience here is not comparable. As you rightly mentioned, that is probably the reason why even heads of states have chosen us as their holiday destination.
Whilst the resort caters well to the families,it works equally well or even better for the couples given the area and the privacy that one enjoys here
We look forward to welcome you back here again

Thanks and regards

Great staff and service. Nice relaxing location...def get a speedboat tour of the backwaters (if you get one outside the hotel it will be at least a third of the price!) They provide bikes for guest use- tip....check the brakes work so you don't injure yourself likewe did! They charge so much for accommodation... I really don't see why they can't include wifi which was over 700 rupees for 24 hrs (ridiculous in my opinion!)

We've been visiting Kumarakom every year but this year we choose the Taj at Kumarakom to spend 3 nights for our wedding anniversary. We arrived from Kochi in the Hotel car.. The drive from the Taj-Malabar, Kochi is about 2.5 to 3 hours. We were warmly greeted at the reception with flower garland and cool coconut water. We were shown our rooms by a very courteus & knowlegable reception staff. We had booked the Heritage pool villa and it's quite a walk from the reception area but no one's complaining. The room is well appointed in traditional Kerala architecture with an open to sky bath and a private plunge pool! Few rooms like the one we stayed does offer views of the backwater but it does not offer clear views like some neighbourhood resorts do.
There are 2 multi cuisine restaurants which serve excellent food. Do try all the Kerala specialities!
When we informed the staff that we were celebrating our wedding anniversary and would like a private dinner.. The resort went all out to arrange a great dinner in their lawns facing the backwaters. We had an amazing four course customized dinner in a great setting which made our evening truly memorable! A big thank you to all the staff members for the effort!
The only draw back if i had to point out was the absence of the signature Jiva spa. The resort only offers Ayurvedic treatments with limited options. A resort like this does need a Jiva spa!
Overall one of our best resort experiences.

Room Tip: If you can.. choose the Heritage Pool Villa.
