Small but well appointed Property and very well trained staff. Excellent food. We stayed at the pool cottage, every penny spent was worth it. Definitely recommend.

Beautiful setting, near a bird sanctuary and on the backwaters in Kerala. Staff were friendly and approachable. It was so peaceful. Extensive grounds and plenty of privacy (something often lacking in crowded India). Bikes available for adults and kids to pedal around the local area. Local village was rather quaint (not modern). Things were well-organised. Even the evening entertainment was not touristy or cheesy. Local people showing off local arts and crafts in a restrained and sincere way. We stayed in a villa which was beautifully presented and had a shaded outdoor bath and shower area. Very romantic and absolutely exquisite.
Breakfast was a bit of a let-down compared to other 5-star hotels but pretty good even then
Would strongly recommend.

Room Tip: Ask for the larger luxury villas which are not right at the front of the hotel.

This hotel has the old colonial world charm, with fresh and up-to-date mod-cons. There is so much character to the main building, with super high ceilings, solid oak furnishings and high quality finish. We really enjoyed our stay which lent itself to spending time on the site itself, with yoga at sunrise, a cookery class at lunchtime, high tea whildt watching the sunset, and complimentary boat rides in the evenings. The staff are the simply world class, Mr Matthews the hotel manager is always available and runs an excellent ship. Gowri on the front desk can ensure that you're always well looked after, and the travel clerk is simply fantastic, always going the extra mile to help you out. Our rooms were always so well cleaned and tidied. And the bar and restaurant staff are first rate. Also if you want the simplest but tastiest veggies ever: try the Herb roasted Vegetables! (the head chef was kind enough to give us the recipe)

Room Tip: The heritage room in the main building takes you back 100 plus years, but doesn't have much ligh...

My wife and I visited Taj Kumarakom for our Honeymoon. Our first Holiday together and this was an wondeful start to our life together. We had booked for 2 Nights and we arrived by mid day to the Resort. The reception was towards the rear side of the famous Baker Bungalow. We were greeted by a Garland made out of Palm Leaves and water from the the fruit of Kalpawraksha( Tender Coconut water, with a tinge of Honey). We were then checked in to the Resort, and one of the staff member led us through the beautifully designed lake and pathways around it. The sheer greenery just blow us away. We were also pleasantly surprised when the Staff member informed us that they have upgraded our cottage from Superior Charm to Deluxe Delight Heritage Room as a compliment. The Room or rather a House( Its as Big as a House) was spacious and beautifully decorated and the best part was we had a backyard facing the Lagoon. It also had a open air Shower as well.Take that for Fantasies!!Just at the rear end of the Resort is the Vembanad Lake. We had a Buffet for Breakfast and Dinner. The Breakfast was a decent one with Dosas, Paranthas, other South Indian Dishes. The Dinner left a lot to be desired as they had very limited choice of non-veg dishes. However, the Kitchen staff were kind enough to prepare a separate Dish as we had not liked the menu on one particular night. Overall, a fabulous and memorable experience and I am looking forward to visiting this getaway in the future as well. Highly Recommended.

I came with the experience of stayed at some fantastic resorts in other parts of South India. Without a doubt Taj Vivanta is amongst the best. The resort is well spread out and has a limited number of rooms. For a family with kids, this is an excellent getaway situated next to the Lake Vembanad and KSTDC Bird Sanctuary. The resort has several kid friendly activities like angling, pottery classes, feeding rabbits and boating. They have lots of bicycles that allows residents to move around quickly around the 28 odd acress. We we staying on the internal lake where everynight they light several hundred diyas. It is indeed a beautiful sight. The rooms are nice and the staff very friendly and ready to guide those who want to venture out. Every evening the resort organizes a get together for its residents and organizes some games for the children. In the late evenings, there is a live classical music and traditional dance events that showcase Kerala culture.

The only downside we thought was that the food was pretty expensive, which was not included in the package.

Nevertheless I recommend this as a quick getaway for a family with kids.

Room Tip: Try and stay around the Baker House. There is a small lake which is lit up with oil lamps at night a...

I'm not too sure if some of the previous reviewers actually are referring to the right Taj Hotel in Kumarakom.......my experience certainly would not summarise it as one of the best, as the place is rather soulless!

This would not have been my choice of hotel, but I was told at the last minute by my operator that no rooms were available at the Kumarakom Lake Resort, so was kind of coerced in to taking a room at the Taj.

Firstly, I can not express how dirty I thought the towels were...they were so old, grey & very tatty looking, like some parts of the property! I stayed above the pool and can assure you that during my 3 nights there, that the pool was never cleaned in the morning.

Every day throughout my stay I had to report that my safe wasn't working, which became a real issue causing me to be late for a couple of appointments that I had made.

As for service from the staff, you might as well have employed androids. The service is overly attentive and somewhat stifled - these poor staff members approach with a rehearsed speech and do not seem to have a personality of their own. The Taj really need to up their game and move with the times.....maybe take a leaf out of the type of service which is provided by Surya Samudra or the Old Harbour in Fort Cochin. Staff can be warm and attentive but do not need to be overly so to provide a good service....it really can & does become too much at times.

Would I stay here again....NO!

Would I recommend this to my friends....DEFINITELY NOT!
