“Over-Rated, slightly disappointed”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 27, 2010

KLR is a highly talked about resort and spends a lot on advertising. My wife and I had heard a lot about this resort and have been planning to come here for the last 2 years. Kerala is supposed to be wonderful during monsoons and we decided to take the trip in 2010. The rates during monsoon are cheaper and you get good deals at the hotel. However, you still pay a bomb to stay at this resort. Since, we heard and read a lot about the resort and were paying so much, we expected a lot but were disappointed when we reached here. Don't get me wrong, the resort is very beautiful but the expectations were so high that we were disappointed. We stayed at the private pool villa and the rooms were done up well in old Kerala style. The rooms are really small though. Even the private pool with jacuzzi is really small. The meandering pool villa is the highlight of the hotel and on hindsight, we should have stayed there. The buffet spread is huge but other than the traditional Kerala dishes, none of the other dishes are worth a mention. The staff is really nice and helpful. The property is not as huge as you think while visiting their website. Mosquitoes and insects are a big problem at night. The spa is a disappointment. The view from the resort is fantastic with the resort being at the edge of the lake. Fishing, pottery, free tea and snacks in the evening, free sunset cruises everyday are a big plus. The gym is again a disappointment. Nothing much to do otherwise at the resort.
We went to Zuri resort nearby for dinner on the second day and were bowled over by the same. We immediately checked out from KLR and checked in at Zuri. You can read my review for Zuri also. Surprisingly Zuri is cheaper than KLR even though it has much more to offer and a better resort.
For the amount of money you end up spending at this luxury resort, it is quite a let down.

Has got a very good ambience, a concept of pool side chalet is also very romantic.

We stayed in KLR in the meandering pool villa for 3 nights during our honeymoon. It was a magical experience - pool right outside your room door, open air bathrooms (private & safe offcourse), amazing views of the backwater and above all gr8 food. My husband did not eat veg at all for 3 days as non veg was so good & had gr8 variety too. Veg food was good but limited choices (but then that's the case with most hotels).

Hotel just needs to organise more activities & evening entertainment as there is no where else to go outside the resort.

Would love to relive the experience in near future. A must visit ........

This is a superb resort with airconditioned villas made using ancient stuff. The main door locks were more than 100 years old brass locks. The ceiling of the villas was mad of ancient wood carvings. The villas surround a 250 meter long wading pool. One has to just open the rear French doors of the villa to enter the wading pool (very clean).
The bathrooms were open air with very high surrounding walls. Bathrooms had natural soaps, shampoos, conditioners and moisturisures.
The staff is well trained, friendly and courteous. Anicipated all our requests. We had fresh fruits in our rooms on daily basis.
One can have wi-fi internet in the room too.
The property is huge and is located right on the back waters of Vembanadu lake. One can walk around the lawns with coconut and other trees. There are fishing facilities available right in the middle of the property. There are enough hammocks and beach chairs on the lake shore on the property to laze around with some coconut water or cocktails. We have seen rabbits running around on the property.
There is another regular swimming pool on the property.
Every evening the guests can go on a house-boat cruise for an hour on the lake. We were thrilled on the cruise listneing to live Carnatic Classical Music.
Every evening there was a live classical music or Indian classical dance performance in the restaurant. This restaurant building is also, made of ancient wood carvings and is open on the sides. The buffet at the restaurant has a lot of variety including western and local cuisine with live seafood counters. The quality of food was top notch.
The Resort has another seafood speciality restaurant too.
The resort Gym and massage parlours were well equipped with proper trained staff.
We had no regrets with this resort and would love to repeatedly return to the place.
