This place is magical. I had read mixed reviews but cannot imagine how anyone would not love this place. The service, food and ambience was totally 5 star. The decor was even more beautiful and traditional than from the pics. I was happy to see that there were actually Indians staying there as well as Europeans. The buffet is superb, especially the local Kerala cusine (spicy) although I didn't sample the Continental food.
The staff was extremeley proffesional and courteous. We stayed one night on a houseboat which was incredible, but the only problem was the boat motor has to remain on all night if you want A/C in your room, which was a little noisy. The chef on board prepared the best meal we had on our entire trip (21 days).
We stayed at the Meandering pool villa, from which you can slip right into the pool, which I highly recommend. The cottage was a little dark, and the bathroom is an open-style bathroom, meaning the roof is open, but it does feel completely private. There are tons of birds chirping in the morning, and even a stray rooster in the background. The ayurvedic spa was great too.

In general the whole atmosphere is very serene and quiet.
There isnt much to do at night..and the place stays very quiet after dinner, but they do provide entertainment during dinner time every evening. There are very few young people staying. Also, don't expect to go to locally for evening entertainment since the resort is pretty remote. It was perfect as a honeymoon spot because of the quiet and privacy. I highly recommend this resort!

Stayed 2 nights in meadering pool villa which was well equiped with a comfortable bed but dark, and rather close to the boundary of the complex, which resulted in some smoke and noise in the atmosphere. Numerous requests needed to get someone to replace a broken lightbulb which was certainly needed!

We didn't enjoy the outside bathroom which also contains the wardrobe/storage area as the mossies couldn't easily be kept out of the bedroom after dark.

Staff seemed rather unmotivated and cool compared with everywhere else we visited in Kerala, and seemed to keep everyone waiting to check in as a matter of policy. Almost gave the impression they were doing you a favour allowing you to stay there!

We were kept awake on the first night by fireworks and disco noise from a large wedding which had taken over a large part of the gardens which seemed inappropriate and inconsiderate to the animals in a supposed eco-resort. Security guards also stopped any guests walking a direct route to to the jetty and pool during the day in case they crashed the wedding which seemed much more important to them.

Food in the seafood restaurant, which has a lovely sounding menu, was sent back twice - eventually we gave up and went to the buffet which was adequate but not special. Everything was much more expensive than any other luxury hotel we stayed in, but not as good.

However this was a stunning property during the day, with wonderful views, a lovely pool and loungers, and real beauty. We rather dreaded the nights though!

No sign of any professional management, which the property badly needs, as the property itself should be wonderful and warrant a 5 rating.

Don't miss Kumarakom and the backwaters though as its really lovely.

we stayed in a duplex pool villa, excellent. spacious, loved the outdoor shower and lounge doors opening onto the pool steps. the most comfortable bed we'd slept in in india and we needed it after touring. food great, plenty of choice, we like to try local foods when we are away and there was something new every day and always plenty of willing advisers. can't imagine anything to criticise. not cheap but good hotels never are, hotel full but never crowded. a perfect place to relax,

We stayed two nights at this wonderful resort. The scenary is beautiful and the resort is well maintained. We had booked a pool villa - everything about the room was great - outside shower, Kerala style architecture etc( a bit dark during the day but nothing to complain about too much).

The food in the buffet restaurant was amazing - the best buffet food I have ever had. ( I never normally eat buffets) However, the food at the seafood restaurant was not very good - over cooked!

My only complaints about the resort is that it probably needs to have a bar and also an a la carte menu. Not so impressed with the ayurvedic centre either - been to better spas and had better massages to be honest.

I will definately stay here again and highly recommend it even for just one night - it is a great place to relax and unwind.

We had stayed over this place somewhere beginning of Dec 06.

Just a perfect place to relax around if you don’t like any major night-life or activities.

The staff greeted us with a very heartiest smile. The resort looks like a old Kerala Village along with the room décor. Though, I agree with the earlier reviewer that the same should be lighted a little more. However, looking at the interior of the room one tends to forget all the other aspects. Beautifully designed with Vegetable Paintings and Old style furniture. I really wish I would have stayed there for some more days. The few highlights of the Resort are as under:

1.The Sunset Cruise is organized on the Vamband Lake along with the traditional Kerala music is wonderful.
2.The Canal Boat Ride is also organized (Rs. 1500 + taxes for 2 Hours ) which may be little high in price but looking at the backwaters with the shade pf the green trees falling over the water makes it picture perfect. Try getting this ride in the first half of a good sunny day to have a wonderful view.
3.The concept if an open air Wash-room is simply amazing. You seem to be in a village.
4.The hospitality at the buffet restaurant is simply wonderful with different people taking care of your chair, plates, table and food was also of a good variety and taste. It’s a perfect place to enjoy the authentic Kerala Cuisines especially the Sea Food.
5.The Canals inside the resort with small bridges over them give a perfect look to it.
6.The staff is dressed in Kerala Style traditional dresses that’s adds another cherry to the cake.

Despite some wonderful experiences above, we were billed higher than the committed rate and the same had to be corrected inspite of our handing the copy of the email communication on arrival. This king of lapse is generally not expected out of a 5-star facility. On departure I have twice reported my displeasure to the Chairman over his email, however, have received no apologies / reply from him. Maybe im not a very important customer.

However, looking at the overall experience it was a great place to be in Kerala and enjoy the exact traditional Kerala Stay. Do Pay a Visit !!!

  • Tips/Secrets — Try including all meals as there may not be any good option outside the resort.

incredible surroundings but it doesn't come cheap. Our party was two adults and a 6 year old child, on arrival we were told we had to pay an extra 6000 rupees + tax per night for an extra bed for our son ! This was in spite of the fact we had agreed, prior to our trip, the room rate. (I also heard another guest in a group of 3 complaining about the same thing).

Having said that the resort is beautiful, the pools immaculate amd staff very helpful and attentive.

Food is good but after a few nights you do get a bit bored with the buffet in the evening.

Houseboat arranged by the hotel was brilliant.

Would definitely return but probably 2 or 3 nights is enough (we stayed for 8).
