“Outstanding in all respects...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 26, 2013

The Kumarakom Lake Resort is unique and amazing. Luxury and impeccable service in a beautiful environment comprising rare and wondrous examples of traditional Kerala architecture (the resort is a World Heritage site and the architecture is worth the trip), spacious and graciously maintained gardens and water features.
The resort centers on the Vembanad Lake and its internal pools (the Infinite pool and the unique meandering pool) and features 2 restaurants, an Ayurvedic centre, houseboat and sunset cruises, activities, etc. etc.
We spent 4 days and 3 nights there in a 2-story villa along the meandering pool. Occasionally, a few people swim by but there is really total privacy. The rooms are designed in the style of old Kerala architecture (including many historical elements) and have full amenities. Our villa had an outdoor shower in the bathroom, completely private and divine. The meandering pools and infinity pool have very clear and clean water without much chlorine at all (must be constantly replenished). Some of the nicest pool water I have ever swum in. The sunset cruise is good but a little disappointing (good music, but the itinerary is a little short, and the boat/barge a little industrial in feel - a real houseboat would be better).
The food in both restaurants is truly outstanding and very varied (both South Indian, north Indian and Western selections) - probably the best most refined food we had in all of Kerala.
The Ayurvedic centre is full-service and very high-quality. An abhyanga massage there is totally worthwhile - an experience you won't forget.
All in all, this resort is paradisaical and there is the temptation to stay there entirely or longer, but you wouldn't see the other elements/aspects/places of Kerala. It's an amazing luxurious haven, considered perhaps the most beautiful resort in India. Not at all cookie-cutter, everything is unique and delightful. The staff are also so friendly, interesting, attentive and interactive. My whole family loved it. Of course, it's not cheap, but a very worthwhile sojourn on your tour of Kerala, if even for a short time. Don't go there first, as you'll be spoiled, go there last on a 3-week trip, as we did (it's about 1-2.5 hours from Kochi depending on traffic, etc.).

Room Tip: We stayed in a villa by the meandering pool which was amazing. Daughter and husband stayed in a luxu...

We booked a 12 night tour of Kerala which included 1 night on a houseboat followed by 4 nights in the Kumarakom Lake Resort.

The trip on the houseboat was good with a friendly crew and meals included but you could also cover the more scenic bits in a shorter day trip if travelling in a larger group. For a couple, however, it was very romantic. Breakfast was served back in the resort.

In the resort we stayed in a Heritage villa with private pool which was gorgeous and highly recommended. In a country where a bikini and swim shorts can be considered too revealing, a private pool made us feel far more relaxed. The outside bathroom was also a great experience.

The resort itself is very beautiful and well worth a visit. However, by the 4th day we were a bit bored so maybe not an ideal place to stay for too long. It's also very expensive so we would agree with other reviewers' comments. With limited options outside the resort, you do get the impression everything is over-priced and there's nothing you can do about it. Beer is slightly more expensive than other places we stayed but wine prices were excessive compared with what you would pay in London. The spa was lovely but again more expensive than everywhere else we went.

Overall, a great place to stay and we'd recommend it for 2-3 nights as part of a tour rather than the focal point of a holiday. Just be aware that they also rate their resort highly and reflect it in the prices.

Room Tip: We would highly recommend the privacy offered by the heritage villas for couples. However, if trave...

Dear Guest ,

Greetings from Kumarakom Lake Resort!!!

We would like to thank you for sparing your valuable time in giving us your feedback.

We are pleased to know that you had a pleasant stay with us and enjoyed the resort as well as the houseboat.

We have noted your concern with regard the pricing which is at par with the other five star resorts in Kumarakom . Secondly the lack of options in terms of things to do around the area , there are some local sightseeing options which can be organised through our travel desk. We shall definitely ensure such options are proactively provided by the concerned section.

Thank you for staying with us and we look forward to having you back at Kumarakom Lake Resort.
Warm Regards,

It's relaxing, the layout is good, rooms are pleasing although not especially large, but the extras - food and massages - are very expensive and not good value. For example bottled water costs 90 rupees, and there's tax on top. Outside the resort that same bottle costs 20 rupees. Dinner dish of seafood from the tandoor oven consisted of 3 prawns, a couple of chunks of fish and a small whole freshwater fish with lots of bones - 1200 rupees. Masala pappad was three pappadams and a small bowl of tomatoes and onion sprinkled with powdered chilli - 350 rupees. Massages cost around 4000 per hour. We had massages at an ayurvedic centre in Fort Cochin two days before for 1500 per hour. The surroundings are more glossy admittedly, but prices like these are just gouging.

I was in KLR on the 9th to 11th Aug. I brought about 10 friends who were visiting Kerala for the first time and I selected KLR as a place to showcase the natural beauty and hospitality of Kerala. Thankfully, it didnt rain much given it was monsoon season and that made the stay so much more enjoyable.

We stayed at the meandering pool villas which was really very nice as we could all jump into the pool from our respective rooms which were all next to each other. The rooms were very spacious and clean and there was a outdoor bathroom which was a nice touch. The rooms had a heritage look and that made it even more interesting.

They had tea served complimentary at the lawn in the evening and the hotel had alot of other activities that guests could partake in eg fishing, cycling to the village etc.

The food at the restaurant was very good and I would like to compliment the staff at the restaurants for their courteous service. Everyone was very friendly and ever ready to help.
My friends who were in Kerala for the first time was so impressed that they are planning to come back next month to KLR. Although the spa was a bit on the expensive side, they all enjoyed the ayurvedic massage very much. Its a must do when in Kerala.

Only negative was the mosquitoes which managed to get into my room at night despite the electric mosquito repellent and that made my sleep uncomfortable for 1 night.

This hotel is the best, a shade better than Coconut lagoon. The two are V different in many ways, this is a modern property with V good rooms, lagoon pool and best food. Also located on the edge of the Lake as such has V good view of the surroundings.

If comfort is what you are looking for choose this Hotel & if traditional stay with Nature choose Coconut lagoon.

Room Tip: This hotel can easily be said as the best Hotel In Kerala, Nothing bad at all.

We stayed 1 night on the houseboat and 5nights at the resort and the overall experience was thoroughly enjoyable The customer service was exemplary with all staff without exception willing to go the extra mile to please, nothing was too much for the employees. The level of customer service we experienced is unsurpassed, and we have travelled overseas extensively. The food catered for all types of taste and the chefs were willing to respond to requests whenever we made them. The resort itself has excellent facilities for one to have a truly relaxing holiday and we could have stayed much longer enjoying the experience.Well done! Your people make a huge difference!
We strongly recommend this place.

I stayed here with my husband and my son, right from the check in till the check out, we were pleased to see and experience an wonderful hospitality. All staff were very courteous and they really took care of us, to our surprise all the staff new our names.

The Buffet Breakfast restaurant is awesome and tasty with mouth watering dishes. we enjoyed swimming at Infinity Pool by the Lake side. This resort has so many activities, even 3 days will be less to enjoy and the facilities, such as clay pottery, cane weaving, mat weaving, cycling, fishing, speed boat ride, etc.

Evening Tea & Traditional Snack at lawn side gives you real feel of Kerala. Sun set cruise with flute music is one of the best experience in backwater.

If you are sea food lover then try at their sea food restaurant. My son and me enjoyed crab curry and prawns curry and verities of fish dishes.

We loved staying at Heritage villa with Private Pool.

We recommend this resort one and all.

We will surely come back.

Room Tip: Heritage Villa with Private Pool / Lake Facing Pool Villa
