“Amazing Honeymoon Experience”
Reviewed March 24, 2013

Upon arrival we were greeted graciously by the staff and while our room was not ready, taken to the beautiful restaurant overlooking the lake...not a bad place to be! The GM and staff welcomed up with a wonderful lunch. Our room was just beautiful and truly a one of a kind experience with the pool at our footsteps. The spa was out of this world...to day, my husband and I have never had such a great experience. We ended our trip with a night on one of the house boats; this was a must! Overall, this was a great place to start our honeymoon and we would recommend to anyone and everyone. Happy travels!

We stayed here for 3 nights in their meandering pool villa. Tastefully designed, impeccably clean, friendly & helpful staffs, sinfully tasty food, loads of activity, relaxing & rejuvenating spa & loads of time with your loved one!! Those interested in details, just READ ONN….

VILLA: Meandering Pool Villa
The entrance is into a living room which has a coffee/tea machine, munchies, traditionally carved sofa set and a sit out area. The washroom though attached to the living room is outside the villa in a half open half covered area…very well designed. The stairs lead up to the bedroom with a cozy and fluffy bed, beautiful painting on the bedside, a decently sized wardrobe, LCD TV, and a sitting space by the window that overlooks the meandering pool. Special brownie points for the bed….must confess that I was skeptical upon seeing it as I wasn't permitted to sleep on soft beds given my recent spinal injury. But this one was just perfect. The USP: direct access to the meandering swimming pool from sit out area of the living room!

FOOD: extravagantly elaborate
You gotta see it to believe it… Be it the breakfast or the meals at Ettukettu… u will not even be able to taste it all just by having a bite of all the items on the menu. South Indian, North Indian, Chinese, Breads, Soup, Curd, Sweets (12-15 variants each in each of the meals were both deadly and sinful). We had an amazing time hogging away! In the evening tea and traditional Kerala snacks are available at Thattukada. Infact, since I liked one of their pickles a little too much, they were courteous enough to pack some for carrying back home on request!

SPA: truly rejuvenating
The Ayurveda Spa has an in-house doc whom you can consult for your spa package. We had 6 ayurvedic treatments per person in our package. We tried the Sirodhara, Pathrapotala swedam, Njawara Kizhi (my personal fave - rice potli dipped in warm medicated milk), regular oil massage, back massage and a papaya facial.

ACTIVITIES: entertaining
Discover ur artistic side by trying a hand at pottery, weaving. You could also indulge in the ever green board games or lay a bet on the billiards table. They organise sunset cruise every evening in their house boat that leaves from the resort around 5pm and returns at 6 p.m. We did not opt for this option as we had taken a half day house boat. They also have a 1 hr cultural program every evening after the sunset cruise. Gymming, Yoga & meditation options are also there.

POOLS: relax
Spend hours in the meandering pool - a snake like water body running across the resort or just lay back at the Infinity Jacuzzi pool by the Vembanad Lake. Avoid hitting the pool in the evening coz of mosquitoes. Both the pools are cleaned everyday morning. They also have hammocks by the lake side!!

HOUSE BOAT: experience the back waters @ Lake Vembanad
We had taken a ½ day house boat that left the resort at 12.30 p.m. and returned shortly after sunset around 6-6.30 p.m. It had a room with a bed and attached washroom. The sitting area was very spacious with 2 super comfy double XL size arm chairs with a center table, 6 seater dining table, and a small deck where the pilot was seated. Lunch was packed by the resort staff. Since all our meals were included in the package and we were leaving for the cruise before lunch, we had requested the staff to pack our lunch for being relished while on the cruise. If u r a patient bird watcher and photographer, it’s time for u to rock & roll! The boat went up to Alappuzha and returned. Cookies & tea was also served in the evening. This place is called the Venice of India but I so disagree… It’s definitely was a wonderful experience but the water is neither clean nor is the place that scenic to be called Venice! Will suggest not taking a nite halt option on the houseboat - they anchor the house boat from evening to morning and it may get pretty boring with nowhere to go.

COUNTRY BOAT: a short ride
The regular house boat will not take you to the narrow water lanes which will give u a glimpse of the daily life of Keralites. We left early morning for a short 2 hour ride on one of the resort’s small country boat…saw children being ferried to the school, churches, houses with vibrant hues, bridge for crossing over, flora, fauna, paddy fields, etc etc etc. Ppl out there use small boats as a mode of local conveyance.

Thank u KLR for an awesome experience.

We had planned a holiday for four days and were looking for a perfect retreat to rejuvenate. We had our first kid four months ago and were keen to take our baby along, who is five months old. We were looking for a infant friendly place with a good spa.

I was skeptical when our agent suggested klr. The reason .. The place was a two hour drive from the nearest Cochin (Kochi) airport, and it did not figure in the current lists of top 10 spa hotels of India. However, after evaluating several options, we decided to give it a try. We opted for a 3 nights rejuvenation package with full board.

We departed from our home town of Bengaluru for Kochi by the late morning Kingfisher flight. We landed an hour late. It was nice to find our pickup waiting at the arrival hall. We were glad to find that klr had sent in a spacious and comfortable Inova to take us to the hotel. I'm giving full points to klr for tracking our delayed flight and sending a good car. Klr seams to have aptly overcome its locational disadvantage. The two hour ride was smooth and baby Amartya decided to take a nap for most part of the ride.

We were well received at the hotel and escorted to our room. We find the room clean and comfortable. The wash room is well maintained and has a spacious Jacuzzi. On or request klr provided a oriental crib for baby Amartya. The property has a nature all around and even has a artificial canal running in between.

After a short brake, We took a small walk to the lake side Tea Stall at the hotel. We were served nice tea & coffee with traditional kerala snacks.

It was almost 5 in the eVening, as a part of our package we could take two spa treatments per head per day. So we decided to hit the spa. I decided to go for a full body Kerala Ayurvedic Massage, My better half decided to babysit till I was done.

The massage was very relaxing and exceeded 'kerala massage' standards,
( you'd know what I mean if you've had one of those vigorous oil application sessions) The massage was provided by two dudes who were well trained and courteous. The massage room and wash room were clean and well maintained. I Would rate the massage as one of the best I have received.

It was my turn to baby sit as she went for her spa treatments. We plan to checkout the restaurant for dinner thereafter.

The next day we took the cycles maintained by KLR to visit the town of kumarkom which is 5-7 Kim's away. We had to watch out for unruly traffic, the ride itself was very pleasant.

Room Tip: Ground floor independent cottages.

Stayed in this property for 3 days in October 2012 with family, relaxing holiday, loved the swimming pool view and the evening sunset cruise organised by the hotel for all their guests - alongwith the flute performers ! Our room had a small private swimming (baby) pool which my son absolutely adored and wanted to be in it the whole time ! The room decor was a little too keralish and traditional for my taste ! I would have preferred a more modern bed ! The breakfast spread was lavish, they need to add some more options in their room delivery menu. Overall a relaxing experience with an excellent view of the lake and the kettuvallams (house boats) passing by ...........

We loved this hotel. The hotel ground was nice with waterways running across the hotel. Our room was on the 2nd floor at the corner of the front building so we had really good view of the lake. It was beautifully decorated and spaceous. However, our entry way ceiling light was out so getting back to the room after dinner was a challenge because we had to struggle to open an anciet looking metal lock with a big key. (The lock was quite interesting though) We called the reception but nothing was done the first night. We had to grab the room boy in the morning and pointed to the light so he could understain what we were talking about. Getting communication across in India is generally a challenge. The hotel restaurant had a very good buffet spread and staff were very attentive. They even understood and remembered my gluten free dietary needs. (Thanks!) We tried the complimentary afternoon tea and even though there was nothing for me to eat because what they offered were all gluten, I didn't mind at all. Sitting down at the lawn area with a cup of chai and admiring the view of the lake was a good way to wind down the day. Do take the cruise out to enjoy Kumarakom lake. It is complimentary for hotel guests and it provides music performance on the boat. It was truly a wonderful experience. Wouldn't mind to go back there again!

Room Tip: Upstaris unit, close to restaurant, front view of lake is the best!

This hotel is simply beautiful we stayed in the pool villa, simply breath taking the room was beautiful, as was the pool. The bathroom is out side which was strange but also quite nice! The only problem with our stay was a protest kicked off outside the grounds so we were evacuated to the airport so we wouldn't miss our flight, because of this we did not stay on the houseboat overnight, we did however enjoy the day on the boat it was lovely to explore the backwaters or Kerala. However I found the staff at the hotel to be informative passing on information of the strike/protest, no refund, or special treatment was taken. I felt we missed out on a once in a life time experience and the staff didn't seem to be bothered about this which was a shame. Obviously this is a freak incident and can't be helped maybe we will return one day.
