“A contemporary twist to the traditional resort”
Reviewed June 3, 2011

The location is excellent, well all hotels around Kumarakom lake have an excellent location as they all over look the lake
the resort layout is just like any other layout in Kumarakom having Sloping roof tiled cottages with a verandha in front and Back, an infinity swimming over looking the Kumarakom lake, a house boat parked on the otherside of pool, but this resort definately has a twist, there is dash of contemporary twist to the regular resorts around.
this one has a whole contemporary modern look to it while maintaining the sloping roof but bright coloured roof tiles, I was in love with the cantilivered hanging staircases approaching each room
The rooms are pretty spacious, almost all rooms face the Kumarakom lake and the rooms are arranged around the centarllly located infinty swimming pool. the use of bright colors is just amazing.
I would recommend this resort to Honey mooners and youngsters

Tip: there is a Toddy shop just 150 meters away from Resort, (toddy is palm wine to be consumed fresh) get up early morning by 6:30 & cycle down to the shop to get the fresh morning stock.
if you wish to have the traditional currymin fish and tapioca the toddy shop is the place.

I visited Kumarakom for a weekend trip with family, and stayed at the Kayal Resort. It is a fairly new place, and has a unique architecture, as the whole building is constructed around a tank with water in it, and you have to use walkways constructed of concrete planks to reach the rooms. The rooms themselves are very spacious and each room has a sit-out facing the lake. The whole wall on that side is glass, so that you can draw back the curtains and enjoy the view in air-conditioned comfort in case the weather turns hot. The rooms are fitted with an LCD TV, mini-fridge which can be fitted out as a bar on request, coffee/tea maker and telephone. The bathroom is neat and functional and there is a small atrium with an open roof which can be used for sunning after a bath, if you feel like it.
There is a small swimming pool with a wading pool for kids. Unfortunately, there is no shade around the pool, and hence it is difficult to use during most of the daytime. No deck chairs either, which was sad!
The food was good, and the small restaurant where complimentary Kerala-style buffet breakfast was served was also equipped with a glass wall on the lake-front. Beware of ordering room service-there is a 50% extra levy on food served in the rooms.
There is very little free space around the buildings which can be used for walking and so on, as the property is quite small. However, the gardens and surroundings are well maintained. The gymnasium exists only in name, and has only two pieces of equipment in it!
Overall, it is a good place to stay in, and comparatively cheap by Kumarakom standards. However, you will be disappointed if you expect 5-star luxury there-you will have to go to Zurie, Coconut Lagoon or Kumarakom Lake Resort if you want the ultimate in luxury.

Lovely site ..... perfect place to relex.... Rooms were very spacious... clean and facing the back waters.....
Room looks as if floating in the water..... the small space is very well converted into a beautiful resort.
But food quality and service is of not of standards as expected....

As the first review says,it's everything you want from a resort in the backwaters. Rooms are clean and of five star quality. They have a liquor license now too. Just beautiful

We stayed here for just one night after a night on a houseboat. The Kayal resort is just a year old, beautifully designed to make a relatively small area look expansive. We were upgraded to a deluxe room and it was large, overlooking the lake and spotlessly clean. The backwaters come all the way into the hotel and the pathways form bridges across them. The combination of modern and traditional design really works. At night the soft lighting was really pretty. This is a great hotel for honeymooners!

Unlike most of the other hotels on the lake, the Kayal does not have a dock for houseboats so you have to get off at the boat landing and take a 10 minute drive to the resort.

The private balcony with a lounger, tea-coffee maker in the room, flat screen TV with cable and shower illuminated by a skylight gave the room a luxurious feel. There was no hot water in the shower initially but a call to housekeeping fixed that. Good selection of toiletries and a safe in the cupboard. The laundry was delivered in 6 hours flat.

The lovely infinity pool was our favourite place to relax. There is a recreation room with a pool table and bar but the hotel does not have a liquor licence yet. The restaurant was nice, good food, a bit on the expensive side but generous quantities. Most of the large hotels in Kumarakom are in a row along the same road so you can pop into one of the others for a drink / meal if you wish.

Staff and service were top notch. Quick, efficient and yet unobtrusive. This was easily the best of our hotels in Kerala.
