Owner description: Josselin castle, a visit not to be missed ... Imagine a fairytale castle, whose tree majestic toweres dominate the river below. Concealed behind the massive fortress walls you will find the exquisite, flamboyant Gothic and Renaissance facade of a ducal palace. Here the very history of Brittany was forged. It is a place of legend and magic. Still the home of the Rohan family after 1000 years, in the public rooms restored in the 19th century, you will see a unique collection of furniture and paintings.

The castle itself is really beautiful, the interior looks also nice with many original items preserved. For those non-French speakers - you have to book English (ot other language) speaking guide in advance otherwise you will have to listen to French - most of our group was not speaking French but our guide has refused to speak English (which she knew) as more convenient language and just made some brief comments. Also note there is no access to the castle without a tourist group

you sort of get the bait and switch with this one--you're offered a guided tour of a chateau then they only show you 4 rooms--turns out the family (Ronan) still live here and they want their privacy--since this Chateau is subsidized by the gov't they have to open up their doors so they can keep living there--you're not even allowed to walk the grounds--I felt the tour was too expensive for the 30minutes you were given--I don't want to advise you not to go but I don't want you to go out of your way either--look at my pictures so you can see what's inside the gate--we weren't allowed any pictures in the rooms

At €8.50 for adults and €5 for children (if seemingly any age) the value isn't too bad. However, you can only look at the inside as part of a guides tour. Even if we'd made the only English tour at 2:30pm (restaurant issues caused a delay!), there's no way we'd have been able to take around two young children without (at least) ruining the experience of everyone else. We only wanted a quick look around the inside and a walk in the gardens -- the boy loves castles and knights so was keen to see the inside. No go however. Guided tour or nothing. While I realise this is someone's home, plenty of other tourist sites both in the UK and France manage a sensible balance. All in all a bit if a wasted journey to have a substandard lunch and see the outside of a chateau. At least the rest of Josselin is very pretty.

The Château de Josselin makes for magnificent photography but it isn't really what it purports to be. Although it does reach back to medieval times and there are said to be remnants dating to the 11th century, the castle has long since been thoroughly gentrified and it is now more of an 18th and 19th century showpiece. This is partly due to the fact that, apart from the period around the French Revolution, the property has remained in the Rohan family for hundreds of years. One of that name restored the castle at one stage, giving it its present rather dull interior looks. Of course, there are those who will love it as it is. For my part, I was sorry to see little or no sign of its earlier life.

We didn't pay to get in the chateau as we didn't really want to pay as the photo ops outside were just as spectacular. Situated in a beautiful town one of the prettiest towns I've been to.
