“The best Witsand accommodation”
Reviewed February 17, 2011

We have stayed only 2 days at Mudlark and this is the only bad thing to tell about it- Time was just way too short! Mudlark is really a piece of paradise, very well looked after, and perfectly located, with gorgeous nature and wildlife along with very spacious and comfortable rooms. If that would not be enough, the food is great, and we had exceptional dinner conversations making our stay a exceptional one. Hilary and Tim’s warm hospitality are the icing on the cake. For those out there who love nature and seek to relax in order to forget about everyday life, this is a perfect place. We very much hope that we can go back some time.

Will never forget Hilary’s wonderful meals, along with the comfort, peace, and beauty of this place. Tim is such a great host, nothing was too much trouble.

Had a wonderful stay at the Mudlark. We had a really lovely time and enjoyed everything from the fishing and delicious meals to the great company and beautiful setting. It was hard to tear ourselves away!

We're definitely plotting a return visit - if nothing else, Andrew has a Cob to catch and I need a Granola recipe. And this time for the MAXIMUM time!

The setting is beautiful and well worth the drive on the dusty road. The hosts are lovely - it's more like visiting friends than staying at a hotel. The rooms are rustic and set individually in very pretty gardens. You can chill out on your own verandah... or join other for a chat and watch the day go by outside the lodge. You can swim, fish, take a trip up the river and generally take it easy. Meals were splendid and more than ample. Slimmers beware!

This rustic guesthouse hidden in the riverine bush,on the banks of the Breede River, protected from prevailing winds and with magnificent views over the river estuary, and amazing birdlife and small animals that come right up to the cabins, makes for a perfect stay for anyone wanting peace and quiet, especially if they are nature lovers or anglers, and enjoy superb homecooked meals. The cabins are well-fitted out to blend in with the scenery and super balconies to observe nature at its best. Hilary's food prepared by herself would be difficult to beat. Tim is a great character with amazing knowledge of the river and surrounding eco-systems. The boats available for hire, with or without a gillie and equipment, are very well maintained and ideal for fishing in the river. The gillies are well trained both as to where to catch the fish and conservation practices. Hilary is also a master photographer and happy to share her knowledge, especially when it comes to bird photography. Over and above these activities, there are footpaths along the river as far as the beach and river mouth. Well worth a 3-day stay. The road is gravel and can be a little rough and very dusty for those not used to this sort of road. There is, however, an alternative : one can drive to Witsands via Heidelberg on the N2 and arrange with Tim to be ferried across. There is safe parking in Witsands.
