Having read the reviews thought we had found a small piece of heaven but what a shame the weather was awful and we were confined to barracks. We booked three nights but left after one partly due to the weather but also because the place which offered so much potential but in reality even though the hosts were very friendly the accommodation did not live up to the web advert. We were in hut 1, which was a small, damp, compact and rustic shell with micro thin walls. The shower had a unique rusted brown caddy/organiser. I found the eating arrangements left much to be desired as you eat communally with the other guests. All in all if you want to share your holiday with others and have great views the place is great but do not expect any comfort or value for money.

Room tip: Not hut one or two

mudlark2, Owner at Mudlark River Front Lodge, responded to this reviewResponded April 10, 2013

I am sorry you did not enjoy your stay at the Mudlark Riverfront Lodge, we have taken note of your complaints. The offending shower caddy has been removed., and our builder has been summonsed to inspect and rectify the sound proofing. This room is due to be upgraded during the off season. The communal dinner has always proved popular, especially with overseas guests, they find it stimulating to ineract with other travellers and find out more about South African life style, and opinions. I shall in future inform guests before they arrive of this catering arrangement. On inspecting the room we could find no traces of damp.

We were very disappointed with this lodge, as our room was, although clean, very small with no views. The wall between our room and the adjacent room, was made of rhinoboard and gave no privacy at all. I can not recommend this lodge if you have any romantic ideas! The food was well cooked, but it is not everyones fancy to sit around a dinner table with complete strangers. We only stayed for 1 night, although we booked for 3.

From the moment you drive onto the last remaining hand operated pont in SA to the gravel road drive down to the lodge you know you are somewhere special. My wife and I came here as part of our honeymoon and had a lovely night relaxing and enjoying this beautiful place. The gardens are luscious and the water made everything very picturesque. The food was absolutely delicious - you almost want to check to see how many chefs are working behind the scenes because everything came out perfectly.

The couple running the lodge were very friendly and welcoming and it felt like visiting here was like staying with friends.

We would most certainly recommend staying here.

Wow, what an amazing place to stay. Felt as though we were driving to the ends of the earth to get here and worth every second of the drive! tim and Hilary are great, friendly hosts, and Bodger the dog was a big hit with our 4 year old. Food great, and loved having dinner with such interesting people. super peaceful but lots to do. Wished we had had more than just one night here and will definitely be back, one of a kind.

Don't let the road to Mudlark put you off. The river front location is superb, lovely people and tasty home cooked food freshly caught from the river!
Very relaxing place and well worth a visit for a couple of nights or so
