“Perfect Stopover for Norway in a Nutshell”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 5, 2013

If you're willing to spend a little more, book the cottage! The view is totally worthwhile.
Wake up early to admire the sunrise and the perfectly still waters of the fjord before the boats and ships start moving.

There is a restaurant at Aurland which would be enough for dinner, however make sure you bring some food along just in case it's closed.
You can take a little hike around Aurland if you're not tired.

The rooms and amenities are average, so don't expect much. The cottage is all about the view.

Room Tip: Get the fisherman's cottage with fjord view if you can afford to splurge a little.

When you see a photo of the fijiords in Norway with quaint red houses on the shore, think of this hotel! It was beautiful in its simplicity with views in every direction. The staff was helpful and the breakfast delicious. The owners have literally opened their home to their guests - surrounded by antiques and memorabilia. I can't wait to return!

After deciding to do Norway in a Nutshell over two days, Bergen to Oslo, we chose Aurland to spend the night. The Vangsgaarden was a perfect choice! It sits right on the fjord and includes both a small hotel and cabins right on the water. Our room was tiny, smaller even than Paris rooms! However, it was comfy, and, oh that view! Our friends had rooms in the back which were much larger; they even had a small sitting area. so if room size is important to you, request the back of the hotel. The cabins on the water looked great too.
There is a small grassy area with picnic tables on the water, and we enjoyed a memorable picnic lunch fjord-side, cooling our wine in he icy waters.
Breakfast is served in a very charming adjacent cottage. Especially delicious breads! Warm from the oven!
This is a very small town, but this was one of the most fun and relaxing days of our month long stay in Europe. The hotel is a short walk from the bus stop where we caught the bus to Flam and Day Two of the Nutshell tour.

Room Tip: Choose the front for the view and the back for size. Consider the cabins if you want a kitchen.

We stayed for 1 night in Vangsgaarden, it was the most expensive hotel we stayed in in Norway, and it was also the worst.
The location and the view are great, but the cabin is hugely overpriced and not very clean. You are asked to do the cleaning yourself when departing. It is the case for most cabins in Norway, but you don't expect it when you pay so much.
The sofa was torn, the beds dirty, the bed linen (also hugely overpriced) had holes in it. The staff was also not very friendly.
Altogether not a good experience.

Our cabin overlooked the ferry dock. You could look out of the window and see the seaweed at the bottom of the fjord. The view was outstanding, with a look out at our own private (ok not really) waterfall across the fjord. One day it rained and there was a rainbow over the top of the fjord. I was happy just sitting on the couch in the living room/kitchen area which looked out on the fjord and enjoying the view. These cabins are also well heated which was important, even though we were there in July. If you are looking for quiet and want a place with great views, these cabins are terrific. We spent the 3 days we were there hiking. The town is quite small, but it has a nice 13 century church and two supermarkets, so you can save some money by cooking if you are in the cabins. We arrived at Aurland by ferry after visiting other towns on the Songefjord (we took a ferry to Balestrand, stayed there, then to Faerland, then Aurland - all less than 2 hours from each other by ferry).

My husband and I stayed in one of the Vangsgaarden cabins right on the water at the fjord. The cabin was clean and comfortable, and we were glad we had the kitchen so that we could cook some of our meals (which saved us a lot of money). The staff was helpful and spoke very good English, and we appreciated that there was Wi-Fi in the reception area. But the real reason to stay here is the incredible view -- our cabin windows opened up to the most magnificent, unobstructed vista of the Aurlandfjord, which was fabulous in every kind of weather and all the different times of day. We would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Aurland was a delightful place to stay -- convenient to Flam and literally at the mouth of the Laerdal tunnel, so everything was easy to find. We also took the hair-raising drive to Stegastein -- well worth the trip, but not for the faint of heart! There are two little grocery stores in the same town square as the hotel, so we had no problem getting supplies.

On staying in the cabins -- be aware in advance that staying in the cabin will be a more rustic experience. It is comfortable and fairly well-equipped, but you will need to either bring your own linens or pay a fee, and you are expected to clean the cabin before checkout.

A note on booking -- when I tried to book rooms at this hotel (and several others in the area) four months before our trip, every site I could find said there were no rooms available. That seemed unlikely so long in advance, so I finally just called Vangsgaarden directly and was able to book one of the cabins with no trouble. They were very helpful with every part of the experience.

Room Tip: The view from the cabins is incredible. Cabin 6 would be my first choice, as it doesn't have th...
