We chose the hotel purely because it was the closest Relais & Chateau in the countryside going west from Paris and the picture of the castle looked enchanting! It is enchanting. More, the village is an enchanting promenade. The food superb (the Vin rose Sancerre is a must try). And Eric and Odile perfect hosts. What more could you ask? Maybe perfect weather in March, and we got that too, though not sure that was Eric's doing.

Our first time to lovely Le Clos and it would be a pleasure to return. Odile and Eric are the perfect, thoughtful proprietors of this lovely chateau. They were so hospitable and such a pleasure. We were upgraded when we arrived and had a lovely room overlooking the garden and the walking trail. We had dinner one night at Le Clos, and the food and the service was unforgettable. The chateau is set in a peaceful location where you can easily walk to the sights in the medieval city of Verneuil-sur-Avre. We are already planning our next trip back. Merci beaucoup, Odile et Eric.

Room Tip: rooms facing the garden are lovely and quiet

Our third stay and each return is a pleasure - like coming home. The usual wonderful reception from Odile and Eric Brial, our favourite comfortable room, excellent food and service. We look forward to our next visit!

Ideally located, tranquil setting in picturesque Verneuil, Le Clos is a wonderful refuge, whatever your itinerary in Normandy. Odile and Eric, the owners, leave nothing undone to assure your welcome and your comfort. There is simply nothing they will not do to make your stay perfect.
The suites are roomy and beautifully decorated. The restaurant fare uses local organic food, exclusively, and the results are delicious. Highly recommended!

Room Tip: There are no bad rooms.

We spent four nights in this lovely chateau in a quaint medieval village. The first hospitality we were shown was to be led to a larger suite than we had requested, one with a view of the gardens, a large dressing area, and a huge, 5-fixture bathroom (figure it out). We had prepaid for one dinner and ended up eating there 3 of our 4 evenings, so that we would be able to enjoy the variety of the menu. Eric is always happy to recite in detail the sometimes astonishing provenance of the local ingredients and, at least once at each meal, trots out bottle of some arcane liqueur that looks as if it was left behind from the Norman conquest. Breakfast was delivered to our room at the requested time, and was delicious and so ample that I cried "uncle" at the basket of baked goods, even when I saved them for lunch.

Eric and Odile were very helpful in suggesting destinations for our day trips, both awe-inspiring monuments like Chartres Cathedral and local open-air markets and antique dealers. This is an undertouristed part of France (most of our fellow diners seemed to be French); much of it looks as it has for a millenium, with shuttered stone cottages and grazing livestock coming out of the wazoo. There are churches, museums, and chateaux, most not well known (Chartres and Mont-St.-Michel being exceptions) but well worth exploring. The WWI and WWII memorials in every town are moving and informative to English speakers, on whose soil war is a centuries-old memory.

Besides the solicitous ministrations of our chatelains, the rest of the service is properly faultless and invisible.

We have stayed at a couple of other Relais et Chateaux inns and eaten at more than I can count, and this one is the best value by far (the others cost about $1000 a day more). It is also easily accessible by major roads or an hour's train ride from Paris.

We stayed at Le Clos two nights. We arrived after a busy schedule including visiting the Normandy WWII beaches and Dinard. Eric gave us a very warm welcome and carried our luggage to our lovely large suite! The bathrooms are modern and updated. We had dinner both nights in their beautifully decorated dining room. The food was delicious and presented in a way one had to pause and take it all in. Eric and Odile served the dinner and were very knowledgeable with the wine and the organic food. The grounds are well maintained.
Our visit was a special treat and a wonderful way to end our visit in France.
Thank you Eric and Odile.

We stayed at Le Clos over a weekend and found it well worth the visit. The cuisine was excellent--fresh and superbly presented. Breakfast was way above the standard found in Paris and worth the 23 Euros. The accommodation is tasteful and well maintained. We had a suite and it was quiet despite the hotel being on a road--this is a small town so the concept of a main road does not really apply but be aware it is not in the depths of the countryside but part of the town which has pros (walking distance to things) and cons (not being a true rural ambiance). The garden is nice and I'm sure in summer it would be relaxing to sit in it and take in the surrounds. The town has some interesting things to see and is within walking distance: but I would think a weekend would exhaust the town's attractions. The only negative aspects were the intermittent wi fi and the public rooms being small (but that's a fact that can't be changed given the constraints of the building). I have seen some other comment criticising the service, but we had no complaints and found the service friendly, efficient and solicitous.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Le Clos, the story start in 1770 when the nuns of the Abbey of Saint-Nicolas bought the land under the old regime called "The garden of the Beguine". Bordered by the remains of city walls and a tower called the white tower, the plots became peasant gardens. A century later, in 1886 - under the protection of a gentleman benefactor of the Abbey of Saint-Nicolas - a Castle was born. The Benedictine nuns began hosting families opened a school for girls of the abbey. The round tower and the square pavilion, pepper-pot roofs and four slopes, false battlements and tall chimneys, windows and doors decorated with braces, are a harmonious example of architectural style of Viollet-Le-Duc. The mansion was an inspiration for the architect to draw on the exceptional tower houses that have adorned the town of Verneuil since the fifteenth century. In gothic style, the walls come alive with color. The "checkerboard", so characteristic of the region, combines the dark brick called "flamed" orange brick and whitewashed plaster, while flints and brick diamonds offer subtle variations in the tone. The sisters welcome families into the 1960s. In 1961, it was renamed the Hostellerie du Clos. In 2007 it became Le Clos. The castle original will require ongoing renovations, modernization and decoration but will preserve its original spirit. In the spring of 2015 will rise to a former conservatory Gustave Eiffel style of 100 sqm, facing south with a view overlooking the park. It will host the breakfasts, a restaurant that showcases the "Bistronomie" tea room, reading and rest ... A relaxation area with a swimming pool cover, bio sauna, bio steam room, fitness , energy showers ... Finally a south-facing terrace on the ground floor equipped with sun and a beautiful place "nose in the grass" to eat more lightly. Today, the castle of fifteen rooms and suites located in a park of ancient trees has beautiful botanicals, beautiful and loyal birds, four hives with bees pollinate flowers and tree gardens. He is a member of Relais & Châteaux since 1975 and this year celebrates its fortieth anniversary of belonging to this great association ... more   less
