“Going downhill”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 20, 2010

We have been stopping overnight at the Saumon for about 6 years, because of its wonderful location, but it has got more and more impersonal and unfriendly. It's a pity they have no bar or lounge - however small. But the worst thing is that the food has deteriorated so much. A friend we sent there reported a disappointing menu de terroir in April. We felt that our evening meal this May must have been produced by a traiteur, or kept left over from lunch and barely re-heated. There were no vegetables, just tepid rice or pasta. Not what you expect from a Logis de France.

I found this hotel on the Logis de France website. I needed rooms for my wife and I, and 2 daughters. We got 2 rooms, one twin at the front of the hotel on the top floor and one double at the back. The one at the front was a really nice room with 2 windows overlooking the square - nice and sunny with geraniums in the window boxes. The one at the back was a bit darker but spacious enough. Both rooms en-suite, nice and clean, everything worked. Baths had hand-held shower attachments. Lots of hot water.

The food was very good in the restaurant, large portions too. Normandy foods and fish are specialities. They have live lobsters for the less squeamish. Breakfast was help-yourself in a separate dining room.

The staff were helpful. Overall, the rooms at €56 each were good value, the food was tasty but the £/€ exchange rate and general price rises in France make the food quite expensive.

The town itself has a very impressive church off the square, and very good charcuteries and boulangeries. We really enjoyed our stay!

We needed an overnight point to stop on our return drive to Paris from western Normandy. This looked OK on the web. But it was not a place we can recommend. There was a strange and not pleasant smell in the lobby, apparently coming from the large and suspect-looking lobster tank. The rooms were pleasant enough, in a 1953-sort-of-way. The town itself is OK, but the odd church looming over the huge main square (and visible from our room window) struck us as a bit grotesque and menacing. The late fall drizzle did not help. If you stay here, we'd avoid the restaurant. We can't recall ever being served guacamole and chips (and not particularly good ones) as an amuse bouche, and it did not get much better from there. This was one of our least enjoyable dinners ever in France. (The restaurant was populated mostly by single-dining and gloomy-looking businessmen.)

Stayed overnight during a drive through France . The Saumon is a typical provincial Logis with a few of the quirks you expect from French country hotels, although the bathroom in my room appeared to have been recently refurbished and was very modern.

The town centre location is excellent with parking available in the main square outside the hotel (not Sat though because of the market) and a host of friendly bars / cafes to vist.

The Restaurant is worth a try, especially recommended is the menu terroir at 21 euro. Good value breakfast also.

Located on the town's main square with good parking facilities. Excellent value for money. The rooms are quite old fashioned with a 'capsule' type bathroom, but on the whole ok, clean and well maintained. The food in the restaurant is excellent, with many locals chosing to dine here.
