“A lovely stay, away from it all”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 20, 2013 via mobile

We initially had some trouble finding the hotel as we put 'Sovicille' into our GPS and it took us to the town of Sovicille. Relais Borgo Di Stigliano is actually in the town of Stigliano. Once we realised that, our GPS got us there with ease. It's a very small but lovely hill town and the hotel itself is also a lovely old building, but well restored and maintained.

We found the staff very friendly and helpful, our room was clean and well appointed and breakfasts were good. Only downside for us was an inability to get internet access for the whole of our stay, even in the office area where we were told it was available.

There is a bar service available but no restaurant. There is a list of local restaurants available at the desk. We ate at the restaurant in Stigliano itself and the one in the next town (Torri, I think) and can thoroughly recommend both.

We just had one night to stay in this hotel which is in an elevated and quiet position with good views. When it was developed it was obviously carried out to a high standard (apart from the annoying shower curtain which is a personal pet hate!). It does now need some maintenance particularly around the pool tiling where subsidence or similar has done some damage. This didn't seriously impact the use of the pool or surrounding area though. The pool gets quite a bit of shade by this time of year and with no cover at night was "refreshing" for those willing to go in.
We were in room 10 with a direct exit to the pool area and a pleasant grassed area.
Breakfast on the sunny terrace with view was plentiful and varied - our experience on this was very good. The hotel staff were very welcoming, helpful and friendly.
Wifi only in the reception area and we only found CNN on the (CRT!) TV. In room aircon worked well but we needed to turn it off to sleep as we found it a little too noisy.
We dined at Cateni (5 minutes by car in Orgia) which would highly recommend.

Room Tip: 10 (and 9 I think) front onto the pool / grassed area

This is in a beautiful quiet location in the hills near Rosia offering a good central base for exploring Tuscany - the wine trails, Siena and Florence, the medieval hilltop towns, Pisa and the coast. A car is essential but when the driver wants a day off there is lots of local walking in beautiful scenery. The room was spacious, clean and comfortable, the breakfast adequate, eaten on the terrace in good weather, and there is a lovely pool. This is in shade by late afternoon but in the summer Tuscan heat that is no bad thing. There is some renovation of adjoining properties going on but this didn't intrude at all. There is an organic restaurant in the square below the hotel.

Room Tip: Some rooms access on to the terrace by the pool.

It was an adventure finding the place, but that was due to poor directions from the information office in Siena. The property itself was nice. It was just a short stay (one night) for us, but the young woman who checked us in and out was very friendly and helpful. We had dinner in a nearby town and slept well while we were there.

3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 24, 2012

My partner and I and my Sister stayed at Relais Borgo Stigliano for 3 nights in June. Had a pleasant stay but expected more. Moira looked after us for most of our stay and she was fantastic! The rest of the staff were not aselpful and could not speak much English. Staff kept us awake in the mornings with loud talking and laughing down stairs when setting up breakfast. Could not have an afternoon nap because of building works next door. The bed was so uncomfortable in the standard and the superior we could hardly sleep. Breakfast was not bad, cereals were stale the croissants were lovely and fresh. Had a thunderstorm one evening and the roof leaked (badly!) onto our bed which meant we had to move it at 2 am (Room 6). Room 7 was musty with rising damp and the paint peeling off the wall. I asked where the managers were because we had not see them for the 3 days we were there and we were told they were very seldom at the hotel, they spent most of their time at the other hotel, Hotel Moderna in Siena. Such a shame because that is all Relais Borgo Di Stigliano needs....management! We will not be back unfortunately.

Room Tip: Superior rooms are large and have a bath

Wonderful location, close to Siena but in a perfectly preserved, secluded old village. Surrounded by national park where you can walk for miles, the views are classic Tuscany. Good pool in the hotel, very good breakfast for Italy(!) and very thoughtful staff. No restaurants in the village but great local recommendations in next villages.

Room Tip: 1,2,3,4 have the best views over the valley, 9 and 10 have virtually a private lawn near the pool.

LOCATION:
A small hamlet – about five minutes walk down to the “centre” – and the only restaurant (closed on a Monday – you would need a car to use a restaurant in any neighbouring village!) Lovely converted villa with swimming pool and terraces overlooking Stigliano and the surrounding countryside. Ample parking available in the grounds.

SERVICE:
The few staff are all female – standard of service varied but on the whole OK.

ROOMS:
Clean and spacious, nicely furnished, with wooden beams, AC, mini bar, TV, seating area. Well equipped bathroom with shower over bath. Views over Stigliano and Tuscan countryside.

RESTAURANT:
Breakfast was OK, fairly basic fare and certainly not the best we had in Tuscany (we stayed in 7 hotels!) – cereals, breads, yoghurts, croissants, cheese, cold meats.

They don’t cater for dinner but that isn’t a problem as you can use the restaurant 5 minutes walk away in the village (Le Torre di Stigliano). Dinner there was excellent - we found the service was good (though they struggled a little as they were so busy and only had one waitress on), the outdoor setting lovely, the menu had a very good choice for us, and the food superb. We stayed at the hotel for three nights, and ate there every night (but then we were on a cycling holiday and didn’t have much choice!)

THINGS TO DO IN THE LOCALE:
Stigliano is a quiet hamlet, and we used the hotel as a time to chill by the pool, walk through the woods etc. This would be a good base to visit Siena and the hilltop towns – we particularly liked Monteriggioni, San Gimignano, Montalcino, Pienza, Montepulciano, and Castellina in Chianti.

SUMMARY:
A good hotel for a quiet day or two, or to use as a base for touring the area!
