“5* culinary experience with 5* host”

Annie B's Spanish Kitchen
Reviewed October 15, 2012

As a group of 6 friends we have just returned from a fabulous 4 days in Vejer de la Frontera cooking and learning with Annie and her assistant Pepi. From the Monday evening when we were wined and dined chez Annie, until Thursday evening when we were treated to the best of Vejer's tapas restaurants and bars, we were royally entertained. Annie has the balance exactly right between cooking, eating and drinking in the most convivial atmosphere. Nothing is too much trouble, the setting is beautiful, the food is delicious, the wine and sherry flow. Annie is the perfect host.

After a long day on the motorbikes driving from Màlaga to Vejer de la Frontera via Ronda, we (a group of 4 couples) were quickly revived by Annie's warm welcome and her gastronomic tapas tour which included an incredible jàmon and sherry testing. More delights awaited us at the next tapas bar where we had some unusual taste experiences such as sea urchins! Having such a knowledgeable and entertaining guide was a real treat. For once we enjoyed being shepherded around without having to decipher the spanish menus and negotiate with the waiters. The next morning Annie rounded us up at the hotel and led us to her home via some beautiful views and a visit to the market for some fresh produce. Her home, aptly named Casa Alegre (Happy House), reflected Annie's free and creative spirit. You feel immediately comfortable there as if you had been friends for ages. The cooking morning consisted of cooking traditional gazpacho, garlicky prawns, an enormous seafood paella and a delicious chocolate and almond torte, during which we were tempted by sherries and delectable nibbles. Even the men were putty in Annie's hands - she had them beating, chopping and slicing with huge enthusiasm and enjoyment! When I think of the day, I remember most of all Annie's charming hospitality, the atmosphere of laughter and merriment and, of course, the wonderful food. We even managed to learn a thing or two! Include Vejer in your itinerary and pay a visit to Annie - this was definitely the highlight of our tour in Andalucia. We are plotting our return! Tracy from South Africa

We discovered Annie on Tripadvisor, impressed with 32 excellent ratings. Although she had no availability in the cooking class during the limited time of our visit, she invited us to join her group's outing for the day. The trip consisted of a morning visit to a small, family run bodega, lunch in a tapas restaurant in Cadiz, and another bodega in the afternoon. We had a great time at all three! Annie is so knowledgeable of Spanish food and drink, as well as extremely outgoing and fun. She went out of her way to ensure that we were looked after, and having enjoyed the day so much, stayed with the group for dinner at a beautiful local restaurant in the Hotel La Casa del Califa. It was clear from the group that an atmosphere of camaraderie had been established.

I would highly recommend this experience, especially if you are looking for way to feel less like a tourist and get to know the local cuisine.

Just back from Vejer, where a friend & I did a one-day Fish course with Annie. What a lovely lady & a fabulous setting. We explored a bustling market in the nearby Barbate and then returned back to Annie's house to learn about & cook the ingredients we'd just purchsed. Amongst many things we learnt to cook a traditional Andalucian cold, garlic soup; gutted anchovies & prepared them 2 ways; boiled prawns & created an oriental dipping sauce; baked sea bass in a salt crust and baked an orange & almond cake.
Annie enthused about all the different sherries from the region & explained the diffrences between manzanilla, fino & sweet dessert sherries.
Wow, what a feast we enjoyed after our time in the kitchen, both on Annie's spectacular roof terrace & alongside her glorious pool in her own courtyard.
A great day - I'm already planning my next visit......
