We (parents and daughter) travelled in June from Maputo up north to Praia de Tofo and were looking for accommodation about half way near Xai-Xai. Most places were closed or rediculous expensive, including some government B&B without sea view. Other places were only bungalows for rent and not for passer-by travellers. Leaving Xai-Xai village we travelled some 40 km north where other beach hotels were advertised along the main road, but we only had an ordinay sedan, not a 4WD.
One large conference centre near an inside lake was very-very expensive and totally empty, but the access road was passable.
We ended up at this Paraiso which fortunately had some small rooms available for a suitable low price on which the owner even gave a discount. These were his very first cabins he constructed on this site, there near the beach, several years ago, now a bit substandard and small for the liking of most holiday goers. Anyhow we did not fancy looking for other places.
Now he is running a rent-a-chalet establishment with several sizes of houses, all booked this day. People from South Africa with sea fishing boats and gear.
After settling in we understood why we got the discount because the balcony door did not close and the shower in our cabin did not work. Luckely we could shower at our daughters cabin, and there was a coffe and tea maker in the room.
We walked on the clean, sandy and free, very long shoreline, but the sea was still too cold and rough for our liking.
The food, beer and wine in the evening was good with a great view over the windy sea from the high positioned restaurant and now empty pool area.
We had the standard full breakfast in the morning, but were charged for coffee and tea by the cashier???. The full breakfast was explained to the cashier by the manager and he would adjust the menu card.
After leaving we wanted to visit the neighbouring two beach hotels, but when we got almost stuck in the sand road (no 4WD) we turned around.
You may want to check with the hotel (telephone) if the road is hard enough for a sedan car before you attemp to reach some of these places; and if they pull you out when getting stuck.
