“Castle in romantic valley”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 6, 2012

Architectural mish-mash, but definitely good place for family trip...but there are so many castels there in Czech Republic, that it is kind of hard to find the right one...this is definitely on of the well preserved and accesible from Prague.

“Beautifull piece of history”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 9, 2012

Krivoklat is a wonderfull12th century castle wiht rich history. It is set in a beautifull scenery by the Berounka river, surrounded by one of the most beautifull forests in central Bohemia. Some parts of surrounding countryside are protected by UNESCO.
You can get in the yard, on the walls and in the great tower for free, unless there is cultural event. Guided tours inside the castle (also in other languages than czech) are with a fee.
I recommend combining the visit of this castle with a few days stay in one of local camps. This area is great for hiking, camping, fishing or swimming in Berounka river.

“Not great for English speakers or in Off season”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 22, 2011

When we went on a Saturday in October, Krivoklat was offering two tour options, a 60 minute and more thorough 90 minute--but none in English--and since there was only one tour every 45-60 minutes, we really had no choice but to take the next one offered, which was the longer tour. In the large group of 30 or so, we were the only non-Czech-speaking visitors. With only English information to read during the Czech-guided tour (a few paragraphs per room, nothing on exterior features, for which we paid like 30Kr), I’m sure we missed out on a lot of the more subtle and interesting elements of this castle. There was a period-dressed person doing a bow-and-arrow exhibition in the courtyard, but the medieval festival stuff clearly suspends for the slow season. Given all the castles in Czech Rep, Austria, and Germany, this one can definitely be skipped—especially since even a 60 minute tour in English would probably be too long. The best part was the ride out to the castle through tree-lined back roads in the Czech countryside.
