Sophia was our excellent ,expert tour guide for this trip to this fascinating medieval castle.Of course there have been renovatoins and repairs to the castle but it has still maintained many of its original and authentic characteristics and features from the Middle Ages including the toilets (royal flushes) that the knights and the King used in residence ! There had been damage done to the castle because there were intermittent attacks over earlier periods in history. The old water well in an outhouse was really fascinating! This was well worth the visit!

I was on Karlstejn first March weekend to avoid all the tourist crowds during the main season. I can really recommend it to anyone interested in ancient history and there are really beautiful sceneries for photography lovers.

What I dont like about this place?
- apart from the castle itself, there is nothing else to offer
- you need to walk (ok, there is a possibility to get lifted up the hill for 100 Czk by minibus - they start from the "Central parking" near the guard house) aproximately 2.3 km up the hill (I mean real hill, do not recommend for smokers) - which I really appreciate, but the catch is, that there is only one small road, which is also used by many cars driving quite quickly up n down in both directions, so it can be REALLY DANGEROUS especially for families with small kids running around (why they allow cars here?) - and pavements are full of cheap souvenirs expositions from the local souvenir vendors
- overcrowded during the summer months, it can be even hard to park here
- if you are staying overnight, there is nothing to do (you can have a nice walk in the woods are have a swim in the dirty-looking water of Berounka (but you can swim there, believe me, not health risks)

What I like about this place?
- nice choice of souvenirs (better than Prague - wide choice)
- very close to Prague (25km) - but be careful - not for beginer drivers, road is quite tricky sometimes and not very well posted - take a gps
- acceptable prices of food and drinks
- surrounded by nice forrests and nature
- 80 Kc for 24h parking

I will definitely come back again (but for sure after the main tourist season). You can find a better places to enjoy nice medieval castles, but not so close to Prague.

Walk up to the castle and down through the woods was spendid.
The castle itself is very much like others all over central Europe.
Parts of the castle can be viewed for free.

Not far from Prague at all, can be easily reached by train.
If you've got the time definitely come here and see the castle.
The town of Karlstejn was fairly quite in October, the walk to the castle was pleasant.
You can be lazy eliminate the uphill walk by taking a taxi or horse-drawn carriage from the bottom of the hill, I happened to go on a sunny day so it was easy to go all the way to the top of the hill and I enjoyed my little journey to the castle.
Do remember to wear comfortable shoes if you plan to walk.
Lovely view of the village from the castle,
walking around was an amazing experience as I love castles!

We went out of the main season which meant only part of the castle was open and the town was very quite. However if i have time on a summer visit i would happily resturn. If you fancy a change from the city and don't mind a little walk (from the train station to the top of the hill) the trip is worth doing.
