This may be the dirtiest hotel that we have ever stayed in. We chose an ensuite room on the 1st floor (Room 203), as recommended by the Lonely Planet and Bradt travel guides. We dropped our bags and returned in the evening to a horrifying smell of sewage, and discovered that it came from the ensuite bathroom for our room, from the plumbing itself. Upon using the bathroom, we realised that it was filthy. The mirror, toilet (including toilet seat), walls and shower were speckled in endless splashes of bathroom filth -- it looked like it had not been cleaned in years. There was also no hot water -- despite there being a hot water heater -- and often no water at all (as can be common in Harar). The room was also tiny (barely enough room to walk around the bed) and it was impossible to escape the smell of sewage. Light sleepers would likely also be disturbed by the endless dogs barking behind the hotel throughout the night. Not good value for 154 Ethiopian birr.
The downstairs common toilet/shower looked worse. Perhaps the only benefit of taking a room without bathroom is that you may be a bit farther from the smell of sewage while sleeping.
Perhaps one redeeming quality of the hotel is the downstairs restaurant, which has good Ethiopian food and drinks (including Harar beer and draft beer) at reasonable prices.
