Awash Falls Lodge

I have no problem with basic accommodations in a National Park - however for what they charge at this lodge compared to the Ethiopian standard I would not pay the price again. The room is basic and rustic with holes in the walls so yes mosquitoes and other bugs can make there way in. That is why they are suppose to provide mosquito netting. However, it would be better if the netting was actually practical i.e closed properly. I had to stretch the netting and try and pin it to get rid of the hole. Yes there is hot water - or I had hot water in the morning. The hot water would not switch on for my husband. The shower drain did not work so even though I had hot water I ended up standing in the remains of his cold water shower. The staff was nice and the restaurant food was edible. Nothing to write home about. We paid for one of the nicest rooms, and based on our experiences, there is absolutely no value for your money. Stay in town you will be better off.

The rustic tukuls in which you stay are equipped with the basics: a good bed with mosquito net, a separate shower/loo area where there’s good hot water (but remember to switch the water heater on) and electric lighting, albeit low wattage. The restaurant menu is not extensive but the quality is high. The service provided by all the staff is excellent: efficient, friendly and with good humour. They bend over backwards to help. The park is very good for mammal and bird watching. The savannah area is beautiful (you’re sure to see many Oryx) but if you can drive to the northern side to the hot springs before 7:00 am, you have a good chance to see the shy, endemic Water Buck. For twitchers, there are stacks of birds there too.

An excellent view, close to all the important sites in the area, helpful and accommodating lodge and staff, rooms where comfortable and food was simple but tasty. Students/chaperons felt safe and well served, keep up the good work. We look forward to our next year’s trip.

Room Tip: If you find the sound of a waterfall soothing I suggest the rooms on the river side, otherwise away...

We stayed here for two nights with 13 others on a wildlife trip. The hotel's position beside the Awash Falls is beautiful and you can look down on crocodiles from the balcony restaurant! The rooms are like something out of The Flintstones with stone partitioned shower rooms, so not much privacy. The evening meals for everyone around a campfire were ok, but lukewarm, so they need to find a way of keeping food hot. There are lovely walks with loads of wildlife directly from the Lodge.

After booking a double room a couple of weeks in advance we were called 2 days before arrival to tell us they would give us a single room with double bed instead of a double room because it was going to be a busy weekend. We were not impressed. From arrival we weren't happy. We were told we can check in any time, so arrived at noon and the room wasn't ready. We had lunch while we waited for our room. My hamburger had a stale bun, but more offputting, the meat was still pink, I sent it back asking for it well done, it came back pink the second time too. Generally the restaurant food is quite poor and service incredibly tardy and careless (ask for something three times before you get it is not unusual, not getting what you want for 45 min even is possible). Handwash in the restaurant area is so watered down you can't get it to foam your hands - little things like this annoy you when you are paying such a hefty price per night. Rice in my beef stroganoff was cold, raised the issue with the waiter and he just seemed to try to laugh it off. Weird. The room itself was ok, if a bit on the small side. Water is cold though, which for the price paid per night we thought was poor really. And towel stank. We booked a couple of excursions which we weren't impressed with either, both times we booked thinking it would be a private tour but then we were told more people would join (no change of price though even though now we were sharing the guide in a big group. And now had to wait around 30 min for everyone to get ready). The second time this happened I made my dissatisfaction known and in fairness the guide made an effort to take us for an extra leg to the tour but if I hadn't been assertive we would've been stitched up again. On the upside the lodge has great views over the river and falls. However, for all the bad stuff we won't go back and wouldn't recommend the lodge. Unfortunately at this moment in time no alternative accomodation options exist in Awash Park so the monopoly will continue.

We went to visit the park to rough it out. To our surprise, the lodge (Awash Falls Lodge) was sufficiently set up with a full kitchen and staff that functioned as if the owner was around. We were informed that the owner was not at the lodge yet the staff were very helpful and always available to our endless requests.

The French toasted for breakfast was amazing. In fact everything we ordered was delicious.

We went for a walk early in the morning with a giude and we saw a lot of birds and some game. It was a lovely walk.

Be sure to carry your mosquito repellent. Otherwise,a lovely place with amazing waterfall, birds and some game.
