“Nice lodge in an interesting park”
Reviewed April 2, 2013

I liked this lodge, with good food and relatively comfortable rooms. 24 hour electricity and reasonably hot showers. Dinner is a good feature and the coffee is extravagantly made and delicious. Breakfast is OK when it arrives - if you want to get out early, be prepared for a delay. Considering the average accommodation in the country, this was a nice place.

The lodge is located right next to the awash falls. Room is very basic- bed is reasonably firm and comfortable. The place was almost deserted while we were there and it was hot. The fan in our hut was making such annoying noises that we had to switch it off. Ironically we got a room with hot water, but the water really stank. We never even dared to use it to wash our hands, not mention to take a shower. It was a terrible place to stay even for one night. There were bugs everywhere. We used the net, but were still bitten all over our bodies. Food- veggie soup and roasted chicken were good- in fact the best roasted chicken we had tasted in Ethiopia. Pasta dishes were awful- overcooked and smelled of chemicals. Awash National Park is not worth the trip- a waste of your time. We do not recommend spending any time in this part of the country if you are not a serious birder.

Our family stayed 5 nights at this excellent fairly new lodge in Awash Falls NP. We are serious birders and enjoyed a multitude of birds that occur throughout the park. I was surprised how common the endemic Beisa Oryx was. Other mammals included Lesser Kudu, Warthog, Salt's Dikdik, and waterbuck. Unfortunately cattle, camels and goats also roam around the NP.

We had a 2 br hut, which was quite spacious for our family of 4. The balcony provided a great view of the Awash River gorge below us and a distant view of the falls. Some of the other rooms may not be as good, but the stand alone huts are great. Unfortunately, there was a terrible smell from the water which made flushing toilets and showers an unpleasant experience. Staff suggested it was some new pollution from an upstream sugar plant but that seemed unlikely to us. The source remains a mystery but definitely upset some other guests. Tenting is allowed if you do not book a room, and several people did so satisfactorily.

The restaurant provided good food. We found the injera meals to be very good, the European fare just okay. In the evening, staff set up chairs and tables for guests to eat in the open air. A fire is lit and a lovely lady in traditional Ethiopian dress provides a coffee ceremony. Lighting was by candle, which makes eating in the dark more challenging but it made sense considering the wild setting we were staying in.

The local baboon troop was problematic and guards were necessary to keep baboons and grivet monkeys away from lunches and breakfasts. The baboons also break into the huts and rooms if there is ANY opportunity, even if you are standing right there. Do NOT leave a door or window open, if the baboons are present.

Staff were relatively friendly, some more than others, but we were made to feel quite welcome. Security outside the compound appeared to be of concern to some, as lions do prowl around from time to time, and armed local men appear out of nowhere sometimes.

The park provides numerous options for wildlife drives and birding, enough to keep us busy for a few days. We walked to the nearby camping area where it is possible to camp free in a tent, but an overnight armed guard from the Park HQ is advised (maybe even necessary). The crocs in the river, and tough-looking baboons, make for an interesting riverside walk.

We plan to travel this way in the future and will likely stay here each time, as it seemed the best option by far within the Awash region.

I just returned from Awash Falls Lodge, and had an incredible time. The location was beautiful, and the staff was very welcoming and helpful. The accommodations were comfortable, the food was delicious and I loved having my Ethiopian coffee every morning in the seating area across from the falls. I have worked with wild animals for many years, and specifically came to Awash in order to observe the wildlife. The guides from the Lodge were very knowledgeable and friendly. They took me to areas where I was able to view hyenas, baboons, and other wildlife indigenous to the Awash National Park. I have visited a few areas throughout the world, and Awash Falls Lodge is now one of my favorite places to stay at. I definitely plan on returning again.

I had been to Awash 8 years ago, and this lodge did not exist at the time. I found it a nice constructions which blends in nicely with the environment and offers a superb look-out over the falls. My room was good and clean, though it could have been better without the straw wall with my neighbour's bathroom which felt like he was in my room. The restaurant served decent food though drinks were a bit pricey, the waiters were helpful, reception too. Definetely an excellent choice in Awash.

Room Tip: Ask for a bedroom without neighbours to avoid the bathroom noise!

I have stayed here twice, both times as vacation-stops on work trips just before Christmas. Last year, I couldn't have been happier with the place - the room was spacious, the view was great, and the staff were friendly.

This year, I was very disappointed. The room was tiny, and the bed was very uncomfortable (an old foam mattress from a local market). No hot water and the water had a terrible smell of agricultural runoff (sewage) the entire time I stayed there. The staff had an attitude and the service was slow and surly the whole time. The food was terrible - bland and served cold. I'm sure it's challenging to operate a restaurant so far off the beaten track, but they could at least serve things hot and with a smile!

That said, the park is spectacular and the wildlife is great - particularly, the ostriches they now have roaming the compound. However, for the price, it is worthwhile to stay outside the park and drive in/out. The place used to be poor value but with good service, but now - well, look elsewhere.

Room Tip: If you go here, which I advise against, pay the premium for a larger room. The standard singles/dou...

Awash Falls Lodge is the ultimate in Ethiopian Glamping! The accommodation is traditional Ethiopian tukuls, but with modern bathroom facilities. Hopefully, there will be hot water in all rooms in the near future. The Lodge is good for a getaway in beautiful surroundings. It contains individual rooms, restaurant, shop and reception. Staff are helpful and do all that they can to ensure that you have a good visit. The Lodge will arrange for you to: take a 'mini' safari, visit local villages, take a dip in the hot springs and watch hyenas at dusk. The park is renowned for its bird life.
