Place : When i think of Pagudpud, i still think the area is remote. So reaching the area and the tall buildings blocking my view from the beach... i felt a little jab in my stomach that this is not what i expected.

My sister chose Apo Idon because that's the best place there is in the area for it's price. Well, judging from what I see around me, I have to agree.

The room costs 4000, two large beds with small ref, bathroom good enough.The cable tv is off and the wifi signal is intermitent. I think it's embarassing to offer a cable tv room only to tell your guests that you haven't paid the card yet. They left the tv with the message that the channel is not available.

Staff : the staff is always smiling and i guess sincerely wishes to serve us well, i just think they are not that equipped... and i don't know if they do not know how to delegate tasks.

Food : The food is good, we love what we ordered. Only, we should ordered at least an hour before we eat. I do not have the patience to wait for an hour for my breakfast especially when no one else is being served. So my sister was uncomfortable that i kept in standing up and follow up our orders and all the things we need to enjoy breakfast.

I'm only reviewing Apo Idon, the beach here is great, whatever resort you choose to stay... the long beachline is awesome for viewing, walks, and photo shoots... the water is clear, the sand is finer the closer you get to the water.

Room Tip: I think the room that costs 4000 is good enough. I don't mind that there's no free breakfast...

We stayed there just 2 days and choosed this resort because of the swimming pool. We payed too much and despite it was completely empty we could just have a very normal discount (less 20% for low season). It was bad from every side:
- too expensive;
- food so bad!! and so many flys that the last morning we couldn't eat on the sea front terrace (and the worst is that when we asked to ta waiter: is that norma that there are so many flyes -please note that we were obliged to move our hands CONTINOUSLY to try to push away flyes- ? he answered: flyes? which flyes? sorry ma'am)
- there were not sheets, we had to insist to have sheets on the bed;
- you have to ask to clean the room;
- bath was SO tiny (we had the last room on the ground floor -I think that we were asked something ridicolous like 8000 pesos for the terrace room with sea view and it was during rainy season!);
- swimming pool was dirty;
- the staff was nice but they were young and totally non experienced. They were spending all day there, they were there when we went out in the morning and still there when we were going to sleep, just eating and sleeping. No initiatives, no cleaning, nothing. Just smiling and trying to be nice but no able to manage an hotel!

We were always eating in the restaurant next door, which was very good but SO expensive (like People's Palace in Manila) and SO slow!

Service is terrible! They lack personnel >> same people in the front desk who doubled as food servers, kitchen staff and house cleaning staff. i can't blame these people who are so overworked -- we had breakfast really early around 7am and stayed in the lobby in the evening till around 9:30pm and we noticed these are the same group of people. We really had an extremely terrible stay -- the toilet overflowed -- so disgusting!, intermittent hot & cold shower, smelly bathroom. Not only is the food in the restaurant really unpleasant but the food was served after more than one hour. But who can blame the staff, we actually pity them. AVOID THIS PLACE!

Pagudpud in general seemed very Jimmy Buffet to us. This is not about luxury tourism that caters to a high-end Western clientele. Few foreign visitors and those that were in evidence were barefoot and laid back with a beer in hand or close by. We went to Pagudpud without a plan and checked into Apo Idon without reservations. It was surprisingly expensive (like $100 per night) based on other places we'd stayed, but we had a big room on the top floor with a private balcony overlooking the water. The staff was friendly and accommodating. The room was nicely decorated, the bed comfortable, and the bathroom modern and clean. [A word about the shower: it's not part of a tub, just part of the room, with a drain in the floor and so water went everywhere and the drain was quite slow so you had ample reason to shower quickly before the room was flooded!] We loved Donny the dog (mentioned by other reviewers) and enjoyed the tasty meals we ate there and next door. It's true that the hotels are all crammed higgelty-piggelty in a small stretch of beach, but it still doesn't feel especially crowded or commercial. I guess that's because the whole area was very quiet and peaceful. I had the beach pretty much to myself each of the two days we were there and could swim and read in sunny solititude. We spent the days being lazy and then watched fishermen work the waters at night while we ate. It was really quite lovely and the hotel was great. I didn't love the dirty looking pool but it's clear that the reason it's dirty is that everyone ignores it in favor of the ocean. So we ignored it too and just had a good time!

i've seen pagudpud when it was not that famous place yet. we used to shoot for tv special here and there was hardly anything there yet. the whole place was just beautiful!

i was surprised to see resorts right beside each other...or should i say on top of each other? the area where apo idon is like that. to its left are three resorts(one is a beachfront, another at the back and the another at the end...it was crowded! so make sure you ask if the area you're booking is not community type of resort. the resort right beside the dining area is renovating so it was noisy and crazy.

the pool is green and slimy so nobody was using it. the pillow, towels and blankets are turned over to you when you check in. but it is really depressing to have smelly and bumpy pillows, gray and thin blankets and gray towels that have not dried well..smelly too! good thing we brought our own pillows/blankets and towels. the staff there have not been trained about service at all.

for the price we pay...it was not worth it. P3200/a room which should have been 4k during high season. we came from vigan and stayed in hotel salcedo where beds and linens are perfect along with the staff for lesser amount...so i was expecting when i booked this hotel (apo idon) to be much much better. food was expensive...it was like paying for something in a hotel here in manila. pagudpod is 500+kms drive from manila so i was not expecting to be paying this much where you can't really swim because the waves are crazy and the area where resort is has plenty corals and rocks.

we left very early morning and went to kaibigan falls..20 min drive and 1.5kms hike to the falls. this was wonderful experience..trek was good and the falls is worth the walk. drive north for another 20 mins and you'll reach patapat viaduct. here you'll see the beautiful philippines...mountain on the right and the majestic sea on the left. at the end of the viaduct is agua grande...you can swim here for a fee of P25! even have picnic there with a view of china sea. it's good to wade in the rocky stream...

Rooms: good for honeymooners, Very nice and elegant rooms (suite), good space, clean toilets, working a/c, hope they got more cable tv channels..

Service: front desk service is good, they greet and smile at you all the time.. although, we had a bad experience with their restaurant crew. we are tryin to pay our food bills, and we heard them say: "magbabayad na raw sila" ("they will pay their bills") asked by the waitress to the cashier, and the cashier replied, "so what?!" huh!

Food Service (La Helen Restaurant): the service is slow. the food is not that great. I strongly recommend going to Evangeline Restaurant next to Apo Idon. You will enjoy the food.

Others:
- Small swimming pool near the front desk. (good for kids)
- be careful with stray dogs, although i found only one, im lucky his friendly :D

travelers: me, my wife, her grandmother, her grandmother's 2 sisters, and our driver/guide/friend of the family.

lobby: open air and quite nice. there's quite a few couches that you can just hang out on and read a book. the restaurant is right next to the lobby. it's also open air, and there is usually a nice breeze coming through.

rooms: clean, well appointed and very spacious. decent size mini-fridge to store drinks and snacks. we had 2 rooms, one with 2 beds and the other with 3 beds. each was very comfortable, clean and the AC worked quite nicely. The ceiling fan helped move around the cold air, leading to a comfortable temperature throughout the room. the only downside to the room is the very small bathroom. it only has a stand-up shower, no tub. but, with the beautiful beach just steps away, we couldn't complain. being the off-season, i was able to negotiate a rate of $66/night for each room. i'm not sure if you can do this during peak times though.

staff/service: very nice and helpful. they would always greet us with a smile and a hello. we didn't really do any activities (mainly just laid on the beach), so I don't know if they can help you coordinate things like scuba, boat trips, etc.

restaurant: service here was a bit slow, but that might just be because i'm used to fast service at american restaurant. think french restaurant...it takes a while to get the food, and they pretty much leave you alone after it's brought over. that being said, the food was excellent. the breakfast pancakes with fresh fruit was incredible! there's something about the mangos in the philippines. they're not fibrous like the mexican variety we get from mexico. most of the time, they're served cold and you can just scoop out the inside with a spoon. the water served at the restaurant is filtered and we had no problems. if you're still concerned, i'd recommend bring bottled water prior to arriving. the hotel does sell it, but it's much more expensive (45 pesos vs 15-20 pesos elsewhere). someone above also mentioned the restaurant next door and I have to second the recommendation. my wife and i went there for dinner one night. i got the honey mango chicken and could have licked the plate clean! appetizer, 2 entrees and a couple mango shakes ran us about $26 (US).

the beach: wow. clear blue water + white sands. no matter how many pictures you take, it's hard to capture the beauty of this beach. we were there during off-season and in the middle of the week, so we barely saw any people. but, large crowds always tend to leave large messes (think waikiki beach), and we didn't see any sign of that. there are some jellyfish that come up in the evening though. they're very small (about 5-7 mm). their sting doesn't really hurt or anything, it's just itchy and will leave a red mark. a little anti-histamine cream took care of it though.

swimming pool: there is a VERY small pool located between the front desk and the stairs up to the guest rooms. it would really only serve as a kids pool. there was some construction going on while we were there, so we never used it. then again, with the awesome beach, why bother?

the dogs: as anyone that's traveled to the Philippines knows, there are stray dogs all over the place. however, none of them bothered us. there was one dog that sat near our table while we ate waiting for scraps, but he never got close and didn't make a sound. he just sat there with his sad dog eyes. there's also the hotel dog. he's actually got a collar and is not a stray. i think he adopted me during this trip. whenever i went to the beach he would follow me. if a stray got to close, he'd chase them away, then come back and lay down right in front of my beach towel. i asked the guy at the front desk the dog's name and i think he said "Don", but i'm not sure. seriously, i could have taken this dog home with me.

payments: cash is preferred. they do take some plastic as well, but there is a 5% (i think) service fee. be warned though, if you use plastic in the philippines, your bank/credit card company will probably freeze your account, even if you let them know beforehand. i had a hell of a time trying to get my mastercard re-activated. so, i'd recommend bringing cash.
