“standard hotel with link to shopping centre”
Reviewed June 3, 2011

Thon Hotel Ski is a standard but high quality hotel with the look and feel of a big hotel chain. Rooms were spacy and always clean and the breakfeast buffet was very large, including some local specialities. However, there is nothing outstanding or particularly worth remembering, except maybe that the elevator stops directly at the entrance to the huge shopping centre in the next building. The location, the town "ski" is a small suburb close to the capital with good train connections. However, in the town itself there is not that much to do...

Prices are Norwegian (hotel) standard, which means expensive for everyone else, in particular for alcohol.

This is a nice hotel however not worth the high price tag of over $300 a night. I research and price the hotels I stay at around the world and make my reservations through various discount sites. My trip to this area of Norway was last minute and despite my reluctance, I let a local Norwegian contact make the reservation without knowing the price in advance. When I arrived to the front desk I found out the price was double to 2 1/2 times what I normally pay for similar standard hotel in Europe. Couldn't just drop the reservation because I believe that it is the only decent hotel in town and didn't want to risk insulting friend that went through effort of making the reservation. Oh well...lesson learned. Don't get me wrong...this is a very nice hotel but from experience of traveling 6/7 months a year...one can find as nice a hotel at half the price. I've stayed in several hotels in Norway this trip that are just as nice and run between 650-850 kroner a night instead of the 1,750 a nite plus 100 kroner parking fee of this hotel.
If your company is paying the bill - who cares? I make an effort to be responsible with my company's money and do not stay in $200 a night hotels much less $300+
In my opinion, there is no reason to pay this kind of $ regardless of the current weak USA $ in relation to the currently strong currencies of the European Union.

In general an average hotel, but with one big fault. The Egon restaurant that serves the meals in the hotel is absolutely nothing out of the ordinary and very overpriced. There are plenty of other places to eat in the mall that the hotel has direct access to. This is also the only hotel in Norway I have been to where they charge you for watching normal TV-channels. Internet is also not free.
The room is good, and the bed is one of the best I have slept in in a hotel. The surroundings of the hotel is the suburb Ski. Not an exiting place.

Arrival: This was the seventh hotel we stayed at (1 night) as part of a 13 day “Highlights of Scandinavia” Trafalgar Cost Saver trip. As such we didn’t have to deal directly with the staff for check-in. The staff organised our room keys quite promptly and we were checked in within minutes.

Location: Plenty of shops around including supermarkets/convenience stores. Across the road from a train station. Plenty of choices for buying dinner.

Accommodation: We were on the 4th level in a room overlooking the main entranceway. Despite this, there was no noise from either the road nor the rooms above or either side, even though they all had timber flooring. The rooms were a good size, clean, modern and with no odours. There was both Air Conditioning and heating, a Kitchenette with just about everything. They did falter by having a drip filter coffee machine but they only supplied instant coffee and Tea Bags but no jug to boil water. Go figure… The microwave though could be used to heat a cup of water. The bathroom again was a nice size, with double basins, a glass shower screen. Fantastic water spray from the shower head and plenty of heat. The bed was exceptional having a “Pillow Top” on the mattress making it both supportive but very cosy. Was like sleeping on my bed at home.

Food: Breakfast was included in our tour and was taken in the Ergon restaurant under the hotel. It was very nice, with plenty of choice and still warm backed bread – divine.

Service: We didn’t have any direct interactions with the staff but what we could see and hear around us, they certainly appeared very friendly and helpful.

Overall: If this hotel was in a more serine setting, I could very easily see myself staying here for a week or two. A very nice place to stay.

Tip: If you’re considering doing this tour and want to see reviews of other hotels, the next hotel we stayed at was the Scandic Backadal, (of course by myself - GR8FUN).

  • Liked — The bed was fantastic
  • Disliked — Just needs to be in a more serine setting
