“A gem the locals are keeping quite about!!!”
Reviewed June 17, 2014

We stayed in Florence for a week and found this restaurant whilst going for a drive. If you have a satnav, then it is very easy to find, as there seems to be only one road up to the place, other than dirt tracks which may well be roads, but not as we know them.
We went twice and the food was fantastic. Would have gone more times, but we only found it, 3 days before leaving.
The first time was on a Sunday afternoon for lunch and after driving up into the hills, we had had enough of getting to no where and spotted this place as we were going past. It was very busy, but we were hungry and tired, so thought we would give it a go and hoped that someone may understand English or that we could figure out the menu. The menu was all in Italian, but the owner (head waiter) spoke excellent English and guided us through the menu. We had mushroom fritters that were to die for and steaks that were huge and superb. The chocolate cake desert was a lie. There is no cake, just chocolate, but my god, what chocolate.
We went back the next day for dinner and tried some pasta, which was also excellent.
The only thing that may not be how you like is the time it takes to get served. Italians seem to make a meal last for ever and so the service does seem slow, especially if they are busy and they were both times we were there. But if you ignore that, it is just great.
The view down the hills and over looking the city is also lovely.
A recent review suggested getting a taxi, which on the face of it is a good idea. My only warning is that having had about 10 taxis whilst staying in this city, all but one took us on a major detour in order to rack up the bill, so you could end up going via Rome!

“Worth seeking out”
Reviewed June 15, 2014

If you are staying in Florence, this restaurant will take a bit of finding but it is worth it, so take a taxi. The setting is lovely in the hills south of Florence and there is a covered outdoor terrace to take advantage of great views over the city. The staff were very welcoming and the food was delicious. We decided to try a local pasta dish with ricotta and nettles to start and it was really excellent as was the rest of the meal. This was recommended to us by an Italian couple who live locally and it was interesting that all the other diners, as far as we could tell, we're also Italian - and they usually know a good thing when it comes to food. A bit of a trek even if you are if you are staying locally in Bagno a Ripoli but La Gargotta is definitely worth a visit.

“Good Food, Great View”
Reviewed May 31, 2014

This restaurant takes a little getting to because it is in the hills overlooking the Florence area. If you are driving for yourself you go through some very picturesque areas......other than that, you probably want to take a taxi. On arrival my immediate impression is that it reminded me of a game lodge reminiscent of somewhere in Bavaria......just my impression. They have a nice outdoor seating area for a great view of the setting sun if you time it right. The staff was very, very nice and accommodating. They even made a special dish for one of my daughters.....she just wanted pasta with olive oil and garlic....one of my favorites too, but this time I tried one of there homemade specialty gnocchi and it was delicious. The house red wine, as is usually the case, was more than adequate and satisfying.
