“Good food in a very pleasant location”
Reviewed August 24, 2011

Ristorante Tre Corone is part of the Villa Castelletti complex, which includes the Villa itself (a sort of small conference centre catering to weddings and such), the Borgo Villa Castelletti (a boutique hotel, where we stayed), and the Ristorante Tre Corone. Located just outside of Signa, an unremarkable town 15 minutes from Florence.

The restaurant comprises an unusual interior layout, with tables cascading down an elongated and sloping dining room, plus a very pretty outdoor terrace which, during the summer months, is the preferred dining location. The roof of the restaurant is actually the grand elevated entrance road to the Villa. All very elegant and quite different.

The food here is good, without breaking through any particular heights, or dipping below any unacceptable lows. It falls into a typically Tuscan category of "average", given that Tuscany is a place where that bar is set very high indeed. It is difficult to imaging anyone being disappointed with the food, or with the well-stocked wine cellar.

Service here is also average for Tuscany, but in this department the Tuscans generally have a lot to learn. At Tre Corone the biggest problem seems to be the small number of wait staff, who seem somehow to be always too busy to properly attend to a table that is perhaps looking for some attention. Also, they have that infuriatingly Italian habit of lingering at someone else's table and chattering away for long periods of time while taking no notice of the other tables. I always imagine that those favored diners report receiving exceptional service.

Funny thing about the service - at the Borgo Villa Castelletti, service at the breakfast bar and on the front desk is very sharp indeed, so there is at least one person in charge on the estate that knows how to train and supervise a staff.

If you are staying in Signa, you are probably staying at the Borgo Villa Castelletti. Either way, if you are looking for good food in Signa, then as far as I can tell you have few options, but the Ristorante Tre Corone will almost certainly not disappoint.
