“Wet bike ride”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 10, 2013

We had a lovely stay here on a wet bike journey. Somewhere for the bikes overnight, a lovely warm hostel with a fire, a room for the 4 of us with an en suite, breakfast. I can't recommend it enough. The owners were great and ready to go out and rescue some cyclists who were later than expected in arriving.

I stayed here for three nights while I undertook some research of the Islands. The accommodation was very clean, very modern and reasonably priced for B&B hostel accommodation. I was in a two bunked room (4 beds) with en-suite facilities and it was very comfortable.

The communal area of lounge and kitchen was very well appointed with a wood burning stove for heating the room and electric cooker/fridge/freezer for cooking and food storage.

A beach is just over 100metres away looking straight onto the Atlantic.

I would recommend this accommodation to anyone who enjoys the communal style of a hostel/bunkhouse.

My understanding is that BPCharlie might have stayed here but the planning of his escape from Scotland back to France was undertaken at Nunton House.

Room Tip: There is one downstairs room and three upstairs. All are designed for four people.

Not a lot of people know about this excellent hostel on Benbecula but if you need a base from which to explore the islands, go no further. It is top standard clean. The kitchen is very well equipped...we cooked coq au vin for our dinner...there is a wonderful fuel burning stove which the owners keep stocked up with logs, a lovely shed for bicycles and the price which is no dearer than any of the other hostels, independent or otherwise, includes breakfast. And I forgot to mention, the pasta, rice, cheese and eggs which were all available should we get the munches!!! The beautiful beach on the doorstep is also free.

Stayed here on our short birding trip to the Outer Hebs, lovely place, at first we thought the £20 each was a bit high for a hostel here, but when you allow for the fact it included breakfast (cereals/toast), other staples for cooking, ensuite rooms and cosy lounge it's actually a bargain. Pretty quiet when we visited but no doubt should be popular in season. We got the wood fire going (tip- avoid the creasoted logs!), but wasnt really necessary as the rooms were well heated.

Nunton House is a cut above your average bunkhouse - Bonnie Prince Charlie sheltered here! It's 18th century but has a modernised interior except for a lovely old fireplace from 1722. Bedrooms are ensuite with roomy bunks. There's a fabulous beach just 2 mins walk from the house, when the weather is good it's perfect for swimming. Kitchen facilities are great and there's a Co-op that opens late just a short drive away in Benbecula for your dinner supplies (recommended as there aren't many places to eat around here). It's a great base for exploring the two Uists - highlights include the beaches, the Kildonan Folk Museum and Eriskay Island to the south. Note: a car is necessary for travelling through these islands. Donald, Alasdair and Cathy are lovely hosts - warm, friendly and helpful. Highly recommended and good value too!

This is a lovely newly opened hostel which surpassed expectations. All rooms are cosy en suite 4 bed furnished with attention to detail. Kitchen is well equipped & breakfast included. There's a great sitting room with lovely big fireplace & a sandy beach just a walk across the road. Altogether, a great place to stay & friendly owners Catherine & Donald have done a smashing job.
