This cottage is really cute from the outside and nicely laid out inside with a surprising amount of space and calm, pleasant decor. We particularly liked the luxurious bathroom with its large tub, lovely thick towels and pebble effect flooring (in fact this flooring is so good we may have to copy it for our own house!). All of the cottage was comfortable and we thought just the right size for a couple. The peat-burning stove is a fun novelty, and the big smart TV gives you plenty of other options in bad weather.
I was initially worried it would be dark inside because of the small windows but they were bigger than expected and there are lovely views of a sand dune and the surrounding croft lands, with many birds as well as sheep and lambs grazing. The owner is concerned to farm sympathetically to wildlife, which we appreciated. We cooked quite a lot and found the facilities good - the kitchen is well-equipped and providing a slow cooker is a genius idea, so meals cook themselves while you are out. A few more mixing/serving bowls is the only extra we could have wished for.
The location is ideal: utterly tranquil and very close to a beautiful beach with machair right beside, but also reasonable walking distance to the shops and cafes of Balivanich. The owner is very helpful and other family members also live nearby, so it all feels very well cared for and clearly a lot of thought went into the renovation. We particularly enjoyed the photo book showing how this rebuild developed. It was fascinating to hear from the owner how the cottage now has less thick stone walls than it once did - they are still several feet thick to keep out the winds (and this was the quietest place in windy weather we have stayed in the Hebrides), but now lined with a wooden structure to gain space inside.
If you like the outdoors there is plenty to do on Benbecula and the Uists. We came without a car and hired bikes from Rothan on South Uist, who will deliver and collect them and are very helpful too - and knowledgeable about local folklore too.
We hope to return!
We have just returned from a glorious week at this cottage. This was our second visit to the Outer Hebrides and were delighted to be able to stay in this delightful place for this visit. The owners have renovated it extremely well and it is a fantastic place to stay. Spotlessly clean and so well equipped, comfortable and very warm and cosy and just a 2 minute walk from a lovely beach. There is a well stocked supermarket 5 minutes drive away but the cottage is in a quiet position and is a relaxing place to stay. We met with Donald the owner whilst there and found him to be very friendly and personable. The Hebrides is an amazing place and we were lucky enough to have sunny weather for most of the week. Benbecula is a lovely place and apart from the cottage, our favourite places are Berneray, Luskentyre beach on Harris and RSPB Balranald but you won't be disappointed wherever you go.Langas Lodge is worth a visit if you enjoy good food. We would not hesitate to recommend this cottage or the Islands and have no doubt we will return.
The cottage is located so you can discover Uist , north , south , Bernera , Benbecula ~ my first time on the island so wanted to see as much as possible , this made it the prefect location. The cottage has been finished to a high standard and you get the feel of a quality hotel. Two min walk and you are onto a sandy beach with lovely sunsets , five mins drive and you have a great little supermarket , takeaway food , petrol station ~ yet at night you still get the stars with little light pollution and the feeling of being away from real life ~a great real fire as well , will be back to stay again , the owners are really nice , first class !
A surprise stay in this beautiful cottage as a late birthday present. Warm, cosy & comfortable, a short walk from beautiful culla bay and local amenities.
The only bad thing about culla cottage is having to leave.
Culla Cottage is simply perfect. The home itself is beautiful, the location is stunning, and Donald and Sheena are the perfect hosts. We absolutely LOVED our stay and look forward to returning as soon as possible. The cottage has been completely renovated and the attention to detail, care, craftsmanship and love that went into re-doing this family croft is amazing. This lovely home away from home has everything you need for the perfect vacation. HIGHLY recommend this cottage to anyone planning a visit to the Outer Hebrides, for short or extended stays. You will definitely fall in love with both the home and the island.
Culla cottage is a beautifully and tastefully refurbished "black house" with all the amenities, comforts and mod cons you could wish for. Situated in Benbecula, its also a perfect base for exploring both N and S.Uist, with all the attractions within less than an hour's drive - and many closer. If you don;t want to drive it is also within just a few yards of one of the many beautiful sandy beaches on the west coast. Despite its peaceful and relatively isolated location it is also only a few minutes drive away from some of the best facilities (shops, restaurants etc) on the islands. The owner (who lovingly rebuilt and refurbished his parents original black house) was most helpful.
We stayed in Culla Cottage for two weeks and found it a great, well-equipped, comfortable cottage. It's situated right next to a lovely (and generally empty) beach facing onto the Atlantic with distant views of the Stephenson-built lighthouse on the Monach Islands.
The cottage is located very near Balivanich, which while it won't perhaps win any beauty awards, does have a good supermarket, a restaurant and all the things you need on your doorstep. Generally, it's a very central location with easy access to the Uists and surrounding islands.
The owners are very hospitable and I would highly recommend Culla Cottage if you want a cosy base for exploring the Outer Hebrides.
