If you are looking for a luxury getaway right on the slopes perfect for families, skiers or just for relaxing within some stunning mountain scenery, I suggest the ****superior Mountain resort Gradonna in Kals am Großglockner. The Gradonna offers hotel rooms or chalets (self-catering or catered) where you can ski right to the doorstep of your chalet or the hotel. A heated outdoor and indoor pool with a spacious spa area offers relaxtion after skiing, winter walking or snow shoeing. Kids have their own swimming pool as well restaurant and child care is offered. A grocery store, ski school and sport shop with child rental is located in the resort. The mountain village of Kals on 1.300 m asl is one of the most picturesque resorts in the Alps.

Room Tip: Reserve a deluxe chalet or one of the suites on the top floors.

Maybe the nicest hotel I ever stayed at. I stayed at many 5 stars hotel which is not as good as Gradonna, sometime less is more. The design is fantastic and the natural wood feeling and smell is unbeatable. Spa, saunas and pools are fabulous. Food and especial breakfast was fantastic.
Although everything was very good, there was room for improvement. Pillows could be better, beds on the hard side and the service could be more "professional"

Room Tip: Rooms on the valley side is preferred outside the summer period.

The family rooms are extremely small. In fact there is no place to move not to speak about some time to be spent in the room or rest, except sleeping in a crowded place. The kids (15 and 9) slept on a matrace placed in a part of the balkony separated from us by a curtain. Again even for two girls this is an absurd if one should stay she should roll over the other. There is only one restaurant which makes eating also not quite a pleasant time. Together with hundred of people waiting for the respective service. SPA is far away from 5* or even 4* service except for the fact it is big. And the comments of Austrians staying in the hotel were that locating the hotel within the boundaries of a national park is at least contentious.... I would not praise this that much since this means some nature was destroyed there to erect this hotel. No value for the rather expensive prices.

HOTEL AND ROOMS
This is one of the most beautiful hotels I've seen. Located in a national park and built as a part of nature. In the room you can smell the wood. The room has a separate area for the rest - literally can lie on the couch under the window and watch the snow fall .. negative for some might be that there's no mini bar and no one Croatian program on TV ...

SKIING
This hotel spoiled me .. Ski Storage is located in the hotel, there you can also rent skis, buy equipment, take ski school .. so you can after breakfast (in slippers) go downstairs, take skis, make a few feet and start skiing. You have to use the red trail to reach the hotel after skiing or when you leave the hotel and start skiing.. so it can be a bit difficult for beginners (I'm a beginner :)

STAFF
There are a lot of young staff, so I like it. I've never been so warmly greeted at the reception desk. They literally give you hand shake. Every waiter who served us was nice. Even the maids when I asked them something.

FOOD
Breakfast
Everything was so perfect, so many thing ... pity that I could not try it all :) you can try drained fresh juices of carrot / grapefruit .. also they have a juicer on the buffet table and you can squeeze juice from carrots and apples ..

Snack
snack is served from 14-16h in the bar. This part is great, when you are back from skiing you can bite a snack (eat hot soup, salad or pasta, cake ..)

Dinner
As soon as you walk into the restaurant for the first time you get your table with a name and it is yours for as long as you're in the hotel (every breakfast and dinner). They have specific way for serving dinner. Every night is different (maybe it depends on the number of guests). I felt like I was every night in a luxurious restaurant. First, they give you a starter, after that, the soup, then you take a salad from the buffet table. Then the waiter brings you a main course (you can choose fish / meat / vegetarian), then either you bring dessert or do you have to choose from on the buffet table. I am almost every day taking the meat because it is much better than the fish. It was great the meat of duck, venison .. You can order a bottle of wine that are not so expensive and so good .. € 20-30 ..

Wellness
a sauna area where there are so many sauna, swimming pool and "open room" where it's snowing outside .. so that those brave people can go into the cold room after the sauna (I'm not that person :).

they have an area with 3 pools;
The first pool for families with children can be a separate pool where they have slides, sauna and a small shallow pool.

Second Pool: Other people can swim in another deeper pool but we did not like water - too cold. I had not seen people swim in, they are all lying on the deck chairs .. that we really missed after skiing .. Also there have none jacuzzi..

The third pool is out, he is warm, but you have to go out into the snow to get to it .. wellness have an unlimited amount of towels.

I will certainly return to this hotel, I hope that by then a little warm water in the indoor pool.

We rented one of the chalets for a week. Brand-new. Everything you can dream of in the way of appliances, even a mini sauna. Nice touch: you can park underground and a offroad vehicle takes you and your luggage to the chalet because it is right on the skiing track. Hotel itself has 2 indoor and one out-door pool, nice restaurant (you need to book in advance though!) and the friendliest staff.

Room Tip: The higher the chalet, the easier it is to start skiing form your door. Please note that the track t...

We visited the Gradonna Mountain resort from the 27th of December until the 4th of January 2013. At this time, the hotel had just been open for one week. What struck me immediately was the design and architecture of the hotel.

They opted to go for a hypermodern look and feel, which in our opinion made for a hotel with a very cold, sterile and basically just uncomfortable atmosphere. There are concrete pillars everywhere and the lighting reminds me more of work place or a dentist’s office rather than a luxury hotel. When you come in from a long day on the slopes you want to come into a warm, cosy environment and this is where they completely missed the mark.

We stayed in one of the many chalets the Gradonna has. When we got there it turned out not all beds were made. Some of the mattresses were still in their original packaging! Then, it turns out, they had not cleaned yet since all the constructions were done...so they still had to come and do that when we had already checked in and had taken up residence.

The interior of the chalets is of high quality but bland and uninspired only housing the bare minimum. There were no towels, no soap, no shampoo and only about 3 clothes hangers per closet. On the plus, the kitchen was state of the art. The chalet also featured an infra-red cabin which is great to relax in after a long day on the slopes. Another plus of course is that you can just ski down right to your chalet. There also is plenty of space for your equipment and there is even a heater for your ski boots. Moreover, the view from both the chalets and rooms is fantastic.

Moving onto to some of the hotel facilities. The bar area only has 10 tables to accommodate the 800 or so people the Hotel can house. There were 10 tables, perhaps less even. Instead, they had about 60 seats at the huge bar which was built in the shape of a square with the staff and all necessities for the bar in the middle. You are not accommodating 100 singles who will sit alone at the bar and even then there was nowhere near enough space to accommodate the amount of potential guests.

The biggest disappointment must have been New Year’s evening there. They hid the band behind the bar so only about 10 people could see them. All the families (because there were no tables) had to stand around the bar, glancing at the other guests across the bar which made for a very awkward and uncomfortable New Year’s atmosphere. There were no decorations. Bar staff could not cope with all the people. The Bar had spotlights which would shine right on top of you. As it took about 20 minutes just to get a drink and the atmosphere was so atrocious we decided to celebrate 12:00 amongst ourselves in the chalet.

The cherry on top though has to be the fact that we as HOTEL GUESTS were not able to be seated at the New Year’s evening dinner. Chalet guests were not calculated as Hotel Guests and so we were told that there was no space for us in the Restaurant. In my opinion, for New Year’s there should be a seat for every hotel guest. So after talking to the Restaurant manager we had to eat outside of the hotel and were lucky enough to snag the last table at a nearby hotel.

As for the food, I can only judge the lunch menu because of the aforementioned explanation that chalet guests apparently are not hotel guests. (Those were, btw, the actual words of the restaurant manager) The lunch menu was very good. Classic Austrian and contemporary cuisine, good portions and great service. Staff was polite and very professional.
What is great is that they have ski rental and a ski shop in the Hotel and even a ski school. Also the parking at the hotel is easy and straightforward.

With the staff in general I found the quality of the service to vastly differ from employee to employee. Some did an outstanding job, really going out of your way for you with a top notch attitude. Then there were others who were on the other end of that spectrum. Consistency in the quality of your service amongst the entirety of your staff is of course crucial to ensure everybody gets the same, high-end treatment. And once again, especially in a 4 star superior hotel that charges exorbitant prices and markets itself on the luxury and high-end experience they promise.

Conclusion:

All in all, while there are some good points it is the basic, important things you look for in a hotel that are either non-existent or just fail to even deliver in the slightest. The atmosphere, the interior, that feeling of relaxation and comfort; it just isn’t there. You want to feel at ease and feel at home at a hotel and this is just not the case at the Gradonna.

Together with our son of 5 we have stayed in this hotel during the week of February 16 to 23rd. We have enjoyed every single bit. There is an incredible high level of service. Hopefully they can maintain this.
Especially all the details for children were so nice. The fact that in the our room, we had a mini bathrobe and mini slippers for our son, that the children's restaurant had good food and we could leave our son there with some nice girls, that the kiddies club was full with things to do, and don't forget the boulder room.
The rooms were superb, the special corner where our son could sleep was excellent, the 5 course diners every night were great, the swimming pool area was a big plus as well.
In short we will come back to this wonderful hotel directly located at the piste.
