“Very Good.. but Expensive.”
Reviewed December 17, 2012

Very Good, but Expensive.
Nice colonial style, excellent view, very good food. The service was impeccable and the room was nice, but then again very expensive. There is a pool with heated water which is the only way you´d probably use it because the weather is kind of cold and the water freezing. Use lots of sunscreen because although the weather is cold the sun is scorching; I went back home looking like a very large lobster.
The hotel is nicely located close to the main plaza (5 blocks) but far enough so is quiet and away from the crowds that invades this little town on weekends and holidays. Nice place to go if you got some extra money to expend.
The town itself is beautiful and there are plenty of hotels, hostel and restaurants for all budgets.

Room Tip: Pick one on the second or third floor, there is no elevator; higher the view is better but so is the...

The location and the facilites are very good, very nice view, great pool and food. Service was good, personel in the front desk nice and willing to help. The gardens were beautiful.
The rooms and bathrooms maintain the style of the place but are very out of fashion, taking into account the very high cost of the hotel. The bathrooms haven't been redesigned for a very long time as well as the rooms. They also still have old TVs (not LCD nor plasma or LED).
I would return if the prices were lower, but it is the most expensive hotel in the Villa and I think that with less price you can find almost the same.

Room Tip: Ask if there are rooms refurnished or redesigned. I saw some work on some of them (reconstruction...

Very overpriced. Faded rooms with old linens, fake wood floors, and outdated bathrooms, some with showers that don't work. Construction going on to improve some of the rooms. Need to walk up many flights of stairs to get to the rooms on the third terrace and pool. The "American breakfast" was Colombian food and not very good. Take 10+ min to walk to the main plaza.

Booked the room online through their website with no problems. Our correspondence was all in Spanish and I am not sure if they have someone who reponds in English. Had to pay the full amount for our stay (breakfast was not included in the price of the room) with a credit card before arrival. Check-in was easy and the child's bed and crib we requested were in the room when we arrived. The room was fairly large and we had plenty of space for our family of four. Great views of the town from every room!

To get to the rooms you have to walk up a hill along a covered walkway with many stairs. The gardens are gorgeous and there are flowers everywhere. I did not see any ramps for handicap accessibility.

The hotel is a short walk (about 10 minutes) from the central Plaza in Villa de Leyva. Onsite at the hotel is mini golf, horseback riding, swimming pools, a spa, and a tennis court. Many guests visit the hotel and never leave the grounds for their entire stay.

When we were visiting they were doing a major construction project and there was also a wedding. Neither of those things created a noise problem, or any other problems for us. The staff seems to really know what they are doing and go out of their way to help.

On the negative side, we were told that breakfast starts at 7:00 but when we arrived at 7:15 almost nothing was available at the buffet. We were there until 8:30 and I think all the food was out by then, but I can't be sure. We just went up to get things as we saw trays coming out. Only one member of the staff seemed apologetic about it, and we were charged the full amount for the buffet. It was not expensive so we didn't really mind, but it was a little annoying.

Our room was on the 4th level and the hot water in the shower was very erratic. It went from icy cold to boiling hot in cycles and did not make for a pleasant shower experience.

Only one of the restaurants was open for our stay but there were plenty of options on the menu, so not a big deal.

Overall our stay was very nice and we felt well taken care of, however, the price seemed a bit steep for what we got. That said, we will probably go back again!

Beautiful colonial style hotel with a lovely garden. The room I stayed was very comfortable but for the hotel category the bathroom could be more modern.
Yes, it's expensive. So have in mind that it's the kind of hotel that you go when you want to indulge yourself. If you're staying at Duruelo, you'd better spend time at the hotel and enjoy the amenities, including the delicious breakfast at the restaurant terrazza, so at the end you'll be convinced that it's worth the money.
I would definitelly come back.

The hotel is just outside the city and is an easy walk (well, as easy as stone roads allow!). The grounds are some of the nicest I have seen in Colombia and the views are spectacular. We were a party of 5 arriving on a holiday weekend and had no reservations. They charged us over 600,000 COP for the night which was probably double what the room should have been. However, this was a holiday weekend and the reception desk clearly knew we had little leverage to bargain (and I was traveling with Colombians too). The room was a collection of small rooms: a small living area, a small room with 3 twin beds and a small room with a double bed (and TV). This was sufficient for us but unfortunately there was only one bathroom which was ridiculously small for a suite that could sleep 5 people. We managed since it was only for one night. The breakfast the next morning was an additional 30,000 per person which was ridiculous considering it was a standard buffet of fruit, egg bar, breads and juices. Of course, eating on the balcony with the dreamy view helped. All-in-all, this was a standard hotel with exceptional grounds and views. I would only recommend for families who require the extra amenities of pool, horses, etc. When I return, I will be sure to stay in a boutique hotel in the city.

Room Tip: Make sure the room has a view

By far, this is the best (and probably priciest) hotel in Villa de Leyva. It's a short hike uphill from the main plaza so plan on wearing comfortable shoes because the roads are all made of stones. The hotel grounds are spectacular and very well-maintained. The gardens were breathtaking. The hotel has three outdoor pools, of varying temperatures, so if you want a warm water pool or a cold water pool, they are available. They also have a very well kept jacuzzi (outdoor) and an turkish bath/sauna. They offer optional massage treatments but I didn't take advantage of this. Now, for the rooms: I walked in off the street without a reservation and asked for a room. They gave me a discount for what is a 'first level' room on the ground floor because they had availability. While well kept, the room was VERY small (see photo) but the bed was comfortable. It also didn't have a mini-fridge (the website said all rooms did), but when I asked for one, they promptly brought one to the room and even offered to deliver ice if I needed it). The bathroom was quite large, however, and there was plenty of hot water. There were no fans in the room, which would be a nice touch in the future since you need to keep the windows closed at night to keep out noise from other rooms as well as mosquitos. American breakfast was served (not a buffet) and was tasty with fresh juice. There was an issue over whether breakfast was included in the rate or not, but when it was brought to the front desk's attention, they removed the charge. Wi-fi is free and the signal was strong everywhere on the hotel property. The hotel manager was a lovely woman and even presented me with a small gift upon checking out. The only negative thing I could say is that the rooms are a bit small, but you don't come to Villa de Leyva to stay in your hotel room. The facilties, view and spectacular gardens made this a well spent stay. If you're planning a weekend in Villa, this is the place to be.

Room Tip: Room 102 is quite small but, even though it faced the driveway, it was quiet throughout the stay. If...
