“Fantastic second honeymoon at this romantic resort”
Reviewed June 5, 2013

My wife and I stayed here for 5 nights and had a fabolous time at Santhiya.

First impressions - very profesional tranfer from Phuket airport - carrier/van which was clean and had excellent a/c and nice cold bottle of water so the VIP experience started already there.

Santhiya staff offered us a complimentary drink and cake while waiting for the boat to arrive. Speed boat transfer in Santhiya's own boat was very pleasant, smooth and gave the opportunity for a few good views and photo moments on the way across to Koh Yai Yai.

Reception was quick and effecient and the usual complimentary drink at reception was extraordinaryly good - freshly made watermelon juice from the bar.

The Private Villa - wow, beautiful location on the side of a cliff to make sure the views are stunning and made sure it was and felt very private. The teak wood with lots of ornate touches to the woodwork and the finish of this place was amazing.

The private balcony/veranda with two sun loungers, two chairs and a table and last but not least a beautiful salt water pool with access directly from the bedroom was unreal.

Bathroom is 3/4 enclosed with one end open which has a Grohe rainfall shower and an enclosed big walk-in shower at the other end - amazing to be showing under the blue sky when you felt like it.

The views from the private balcony and rooms where just amazing - small uninhabited islands in the distance and with Phuket in the back where you could see it lighting up at night.

For once I have to say that the pictures on a WEB site is what you get when you arrive to Santhiya's Koh Yai Yai Resort - it's amazing.

In the resturant and bar which was essentialy the same - the food there was of excellent quality. Very good value for money of both local Thai dishes and western type in a small and good selection but presented VERY nicely and all we tried was high quality in both taste and presentation. No doubt the moto in terms of the menu here was less is more - which was certainly true in the positive sense at Santhiya.

Breakfast was excellent as well with choice of hot and cold dishes but still kept simple and delicate to the quilty of food and presentation was in top.

Santhiya's bar have a nice little afternoon "Happy Hour" where they serve 2-3 cocktail (free drinks) which was a good way relax with a beautiful view out over the beach.

The staff's enthusiasm, friendliness and professionalism was always on show and overall everyone there made you feel special - so thank you to James in the bar, May in the restaurant ,Lolita singing and Che playing acustic guitar for us during our "private" beach dinners.

The only remark we have is that there is not a lot of other things to experience on the island.

We rented a scooter two days and was both north and south and except some very nice views there are not really anyhing to spend time on outside the resort. The day after our scooter ride we where told by one of of the local Santhiya staff that Koh Yai Yai is predominately muslim and quite conservative - which would have been good to know in order respect proper clothing while being in the "local" space.

Instead of exploring the island you should explore the islands around on one of the boat trips which takes you to the islands close by or to Phi Phi which is about one hour away in a speed boat.

We did a day trip to the islands close to Santhiya and like the rest if was very professional, well planned, nice lunch and we where well taken care of.

Thanks again to Lloyd and his staff at Santhiya for making our "Second Honeymoon" so fantastic - we are ready to do it again very soon.

About location: 40 mins away from phuket pier (phuket airport to phuket pier is 30 mins by Car without traffic jams) by speedboat. Cost 1500 THB per pax per way (from airport to the resort), timing available: 12:30pm, and 4:30pm, according to the resort's schedule. So in total the transfer is 1h10 mins from the airport to the resort.
If your flight make you miss their speedboat's schedule, you still can take the mini taxi which available at the airport for 650 THB/way to reach the public Pier (30 mins away), then continue taking the public long-tail boat (50 THB but if can please take the speedboat which is twice faster), or the public speedboat (200 THB/pax, 40 mins to reach the koh pha ngan pier). And when u arrive there, the resort's car will be there waiting for you at anytime, you have to travel another 40 mins and it's cost u another 1000 THB per way. In total the transfer is 2 hours (without waiting for the public speedboat's available, every 2 hours they have 1, i think)
So I strongly recommend you go for the resort's transfer, because it's short and convenient since they have got their own private pier, and you will only need to take 2 time transport per way instead of 3. Anyway, it's my nightmare till I see the resort, absolutely worth of traveling.

About the food, the resort only has 1 restaurant, which serves Thai cuisine and Western cuisine. Do not expect much from the restaurant lol, and remember to bring your own alcohol, snacks or whatever u want (the villa provides all these at a cost :) so better bring your own). Rating for the restaurant:
Food quality: 7/10
Food choices: 5/10
Food value: 5/10

About the villa, amazing pool villa with ocean view. I'm really happy to stay here and have a unforgettable memory. Love it x 100 times..
About the activities, well, Im not a water sport person, as I dont know how to swim. But I went for a private trip ( pay more but timing is made by you, instead of waiting for enough people to start the trip) to Yoh kao Noi island, for snorkeling and sightseeing. I would love to rate it at 9/10, wonderful experience with excellent service, 3 serve 1 lol, with a beautiful speedboat. I believe they provide quite a few trips to different places, you can check with them if you want. Private trips start at 10000 THB -30000 THB (5-6 hours), public trips start at 2000THB/pax - 5000THB/pax.

Overall, my rating for the resort itself is 8/10, beverage 5/10, location 6/10 (beautiful island but too far and a bit boring if u travel as a group for happening), location 9/10 (this rating is if your trip's purpose is for honeymoon, or you just wanna have some peace and quite, environment is absolutely romantic and relaxing), service 8/10 (friendly and excellent)

Best advise: bcos the mosquitos love you, so in order to protect yourself, bring along a insect repellent spray or mosquito lotion lol.
Strongly recommend for couple or honeymoon period!

Dear Ivyp Tran,

Greetings from Santhiya Koh Yao Yai Resoprt & Spa,!

"Amazing resort ecept its restaurant an.d transportation"

Before anything else let me say EXCUSE (the word the I can define) for unexpected experience that you have from the transportation which actually standard for 5 star resort its a normal amount as a luxury private speedboat.

It's also good to know that you a chance to find an alternative which a local transportation but it will take long period of time and ofcourse conveincy will be felt upon, as said WHY not try as experience.

Second, we have 2 Restaurant The Chantara and The By the Sea which serve different venue/menu as prepared by our Executive Sous Chef, I'm not sure if you're unawear of this place.

But anyway we were glad that you have a fine stay with us speciall the villa itself that give you a wellming feeling and ambiance that never been seen in other place only in Santhiya.

I would like to invite you once again in the near future if possible to visit us and reconsider your comments.

Please let me kown if you will have time and I personnally will take care of your arrrival and see the it pass to your satisfaction.

We stayed here for 4 days for our honeymoon and had a wonderful time. The villa was very spacious, and beautifully decorated with lots of ornate wood carvings. The private pool was great, and of course the views were spectacular. The entire staff was so friendly and helpful. They really pay attention to the details at this resort, from the room decor to the food presentation, even the way they fold the towels, it seems like everything has a lot of thought put into it. The food was really good at the restaurant, they did a great job of providing a lot of variety on the menu which is important since you pretty much have to eat there for every meal. The mango salad, the seared tuna and the raad nha were my favorite. The cocktails were also very good, and I thought everything was pretty reasonably priced considering it's a 5 star resort on a secluded island where everything has to be brought in. We booked an all day snorkel boat trip around some of the smaller islands and I definitely recommend it. It ended up being cloudy and a little rainy that day so the snorkeling unfortunately wasn't that spectacular but our guide and captain were so incredibly friendly and took us around to so many different islands with so much beautiful scenery and lots of great swimming that it didn't even matter that the snorkeling was a bust because of the weather. Plus just being on a beautiful, rustic wooden longtail boat all day was awesome in itself. To sum it up, this is a great place for a honeymoon or just a nice private getaway. You'll love it if you just want a peaceful, relaxing vacation where you have all day to just read on the beach or soak up in the sun in your private pool. We'll definitely be back!

We stayed here for 8 nights so got to experience most of the things on offer.

First impressions - We booked the speedboat trasfer and got picked up from the airport, transportation was new people carrier/van which was clean and had excellent a/c. Dropped off at the marina which is a fairly newish complex with an impressive selection of privately owned boats, Santhiya staff took us to the cafe/bistro for a complimentary drink and cake which was accompanied by cold towels to freshen up. Speed boat transfer was very pleasant and got some great pics on the way over, the approach to the resort (if the sea is calm) is fantastic and gives you some great photo's. Reception was quick and effecient and due to our early arrival they had made sure our room was ready earlier than normal, the usual cmplimentary drink at reception was provided.

The Villas - wow, beautiful location on the side of a cliff to make sure the views are stunning, really well made with lots of ornate touches to the woodwork, carvings everywhere and even at the the end of our stay I don't think i'd spotted everything. Nice size deck space, 2 sun loungers (very comfy) beautiful salt water pool with access from the bedroom if you so wish, lounge was nicely laid out, plenty of room, nice entertainment system for the ipod or other plug-in devices and dvd/blu ray player built in, mini-bar and wine fridge well stocked and snacks in the fridge. dressing room was huge, his'n'her dressing tables/wardrobes so we could unpack properly and seperate space each, excellent safe which took my laptop with lots of room to spare. Bedroom is not huge a you have the drssing room but did not feel small. Bathroom is 3/4 enclosed with one end open which has a rainfall shower (very nice) and an enclosed big walk-in shower at the other end, his'n'her sinks and cabinets for all your toiletries. I'll just finish with the views from the rooms which are amazing, small uninhabited islands in the distance, watching the sea eagle/osprey?? flying overhead on most days looking for a meal and a gentle breeze on most days.

Food - the food was excellent quality and very good value for money, service in the restaraunts and for room service was generally good, even when busy the wait was not excessive and the consistency of the food was good, I never once ordered a meal I had had before that was different from the previous time. The selection on the menu is quite good with Thai and Western meals available, once small comment would be to maybe have a selection of dishes on the menu always and rotate some additional dishes as we found ourselves having some dishes more than twice but they may just be our choices as we aren't big fish lovers. Breakfast was good but could have been excellent with a few additional items for order such as smoked salmon or eggs benedict but on the whole no issues and the egg station was very good. The bar also served a bar menu which was nice and each afternoon between 2-3 cocktail hour (free drinks) was a nice way to spend an hour with a beautiful view out over the beach. The proximity to the beach and the pool with the waves rolling in and the waterfall noises created a lovely ambiance!!

Pool & Spa - we enjoyed the main pool on several occassions which is very big, laid out well so as not to bunch the guests together and is kept at a very nice temp. Waterfall adds a nice aspect to the pool and the proximity to the jungle around provides some distraction with all the different butterflies coming and goin! We have had massage treatments all over the world so have a good bit of experience to compare them to, my wife thought this was the best massage she had experienced, I'd go top 5 based on my preference for a hot stone which wasn't available but it was a top notch massage and the whole experience was excellent, the spa isn't complete so the full experience wasn't available, i belive when completed the spa will be located at the top of the cliff which should be spectacular.

Cost - the over all cost whilst staying on the resort was very good value for money, we don't drink a lot of alchohol so can't really advise on that but it didn't seem excessive, food was well priced and the average meal price for a starter was around 4-6gbp, main courses 7-12gbp and good portion sizes.

Service - service on the whole was very good, a few snags with the language issue but then I don't think you can complain as the staff's enthusiasm, friendliness and professionalism was always on show, a lot of the staff are from the island as it should be, you can see they are learning and the majority of staff speak reasonable english so nothing to worry about.

Other bits - we did the day trip using the resort speed boat and Pol showed us around the islands, he is from the island and his father was a fisherman so he has excellent knowledge of the area and the best places to go, when to go so we missed most of the tourists (except James Bond island) which you can't miss the tourists on..... lunch was on a tiny beach in a protected cove and provided us with one of the highlights of the holiday. If you only do one thing whilst here the Islands tour is a must it really is a fantastic day out full of memories and beautiful sights. Room service was another plus as we found it a nice change one evening to chill in the room and order in, no extra charge for the service and this applies for breakfast too.

So can't think of anything else but feel free to ask me if you have a specific question, all in if you are looking at this area and thinking of booking as a famous company says "Just do it!" You'll have the trip of a lifetime and lots of fantastic memories to go home with.

P.s. Hi Lloyd, you're doing a great job with the resort, pass on our compliments to the staff for providing us a with a wonderful stay and hope to see you soon! Rob and Kath

Room Tip: The best villa for view and setting seemed to be 1006 and 1004 but to be fair all the rooms are gonn...

I don't normally write reviews, and I would love to keep this place a secret, but this place is worth writing about and it would probably be a crime not to tell people about it.

So here it is: Firstly, the island itself is the perfect place for a relaxing getaway.
It's also a great base for exploring other areas such as phuket, krabi, phi phi and james bond island. But the hotel itself is so great, you won't really want to leave it anyway.

The rooms are actually better than the pictures. Spacious, Great attention to authentic detail, rustic but luxurious. Opening your bedroom doors to the infinity pool with breathtaking cliff top view is as good as it gets.

The service makes you feel like a VIP, all the time. Nothing seemed like too much trouble. Any request was dealt with promptly. Lloyd was one of the best hotel managers we've met, Paul, the great activities manager and Marc the food manager all made our stay unforgettable.
The food was delicious (especially the thai food) and presented beautifully, not to mention the great live music from the brother and sis duo. Especially when they played our request over dinner.

The huge pool with the waterfall was a real wow factor, but we didn't even get in it as we were so besotted with our own villa and pool!

5 days didn't feel like long enough and we'd love to be back one day soon!
Thank you Santhiya!

I had searched google for days trying to find a nice resort with a certain criteria... ie villa, private pool, spacious, traditional Thai, 5 star etc etc... Santhiya koh Yao Yai was the type of place I knew would either be amazing or a complete swing and a miss. I decided to take a gamble based on the reviews and surprise my girlfriend with a 3 night stay in one of the ocean view villas, and I'm glad I did! All the old reviews complaining about the language barrier and continued construction have been heard and completely rectified. Construction is still underway at the resort but isn't noticeable in regards to noise and all the constuction workers outside of hotel staff are friendly and take every precaution to ensure you are not bothered by their presence. As for staff, most of the important areas for information are staffed with employees with excellent English and others who are also well traveled. One stand out was a guy named James who had lived in Vancouver for 23 years... Dead set legend! And was extremely helpful with any queries we had. With that said, be fair warned that the prices for everything in the resort reflect 5 stars... I have paid less for most things at home in Sydney. The hotel are not very friendly in regards to helping you stay on a budget and I guess nor should they. However, with a bit of local knowledge you can achieve just that. ie, instead of the private boat through the hotel for 700b one way each, a speed boat can be caught from Phuket to Low jark pier for only 200b and you can hire a scooter from a resort just to the left of the pier at white house resort for 300b a day to get you around the island. The scooter is extremely handy if your like to book any island tours during your stay as they are roughly a third of the price outside of Santhiya. If you're not comfortable on a scooter you can arrange the hotel to pick you up from low jark pier. The resort will charge you 300b total to pick you up from low jark pier in one of their vans, which is good value if more than 3 people are traveling with you. Remember to come prepared with Thai baht as exchanging money here can be difficult and stock up on alcohol and snacks in Phuket as both are not cheap within the resort. That said, be sure to take advantage of their happy hour with free cocktails between 2-3pm. The free cocktails change daily.
