“Great Getaway”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 20, 2012

We spent 2 nights in a seaview bungalow. The rooms were gorgeous and spacious. We had our 2 young boys with us, so we appreciated the room. The grounds of the hotel are breathtaking with rice fields on the lower part of the hotel grounds. The pools were beautiful overlooking the ocean. You look out to the other islands, simply stunning. The pools were great for kids also. We hired a motorbike for the day, (which was far too expensive) and rode around the island for the day. My husband is Thai so we went on the hunt for great food cooked by the locals. Also gave us the freedom to eat dinner elsewhere. The hotel food was ok, but we have had better for a quarter of the price. The staff were great. It's a place you want to stay the same and not become over run like Patong. But it is hard not telling people about your great experiences. We will be back, for hopefully another memorable stay.

Room Tip: I think you'd be happy with any bungalow here but closer to the water is always good.

I spent 3 or 4 days here and really enjoyed it.

Positives: The room was great, the pool was awesome, and and the view out toward the other islands is stunning. The hotel offers rental motorbikes and it was so fun zipping around exploring the island for a day. There is a small village just to the North and I had a great time walking around there, meeting the friendly locals, and playing soccer with the kids. I also did a day trip on a long tail boat to some nearby islands, including Hong Island. Beautiful!

Neutrals: The food in the restaurant was OK, but not the best that I have had in Thailand. And service was a little slow. The resort is a bit remote, so there are really no other options for food that you can walk to. When I was there additional rooms were being built. Hopefully it won't be too crowded in the future.

Negatives: The only real negative is the beach, or rather the lack of one. It's muddy and rocky. Not good for swimming, even at high tide. If they had a real beach, this would be one of my top picks in Southern Thailand and I would have given it 5 stars.

I was aware that the location of this resort was secluded, hence I was a little apprehensive because I have never heard of this island, nor did I know what to expect from a remote village. I am glad I chose Koh Yao Yai because this is truly one-of-a-kind peaceful tropical haven. If you are looking for a quiet and relaxing vacation, I recommend this resort. It is far from the hustle and bustle of other popular holiday destinations such as Krabi and Phuket.

The island:
Koh Yao Yai Island is centrally located, hence making visits to islands nearby easy. Their grounds are practically untouched. Being there gives you a sense of traditional Thai island life. The resort (though remotely situated), is accessible the resort's car and bike. It is heavily forested island and therefore you may want to come prepared with an insect repellent. The beach is beautiful. It makes a good romantic walk along the coast but it is not suitable for swimming as the waters are murky.

Rooms:
We had booked a Deluxe Bungalow for 3 days at a reasonable price. The room was spacious, decorated in Thai folk furniture, had an awesome outdoor rain shower, a huge bed with plush pillows, an outdoor lounge area (be sure to hide within the mosquito net!), and there were sufficient modern amenities. It was reasonably comfortable overall. It is not 100% snuggly and pleasant. The bungalows being set in a jungle ambience so do expect insects to visit. The staff are very helpful and friendly so do not hesitate to approach them to help make your room more comfortable.

Restaurant:
Our room booking came with breakfast every morning (it includes a good selection of cereals, breads, omelettes and tropical fruits), a traditional Thai set dinner, and a BBQ grill dinner. It has a variety of Western and Thai food. It is delicious but some beverages are rather expensive. We stocked up on beer and water from a convenience store at Phuket boat pier. It is cheaper and it saved us quite a fair bit.

Activities:
Are are plenty of activities available at the resort for everyone. Our guide was friendly, speaks English and very experienced. I was glad that our guide had put our safety above everything else when we told him we wanted to visit and snorkel at Phi Phi Islands. He suggested against it as he explained that the southern monsoon winds would be strong that day and the water currents would be dangerous. He took us to Khai Island instead where it would be safer to snorkel as the waters were more shallow. When we were on our way back to the resort from Khai Island, we saw a small-scale cyclone at a distant near the Phi Phi Islands! We were thankful we took our guide's advice. We still had a good time on Khai Island and we will definitely come back again (when the season is right) to visit the Phi Phi islands. Also, check out Phang Nga Bay and the infamous James Bond Island on canoe. Its limestone cliff formations are beautiful!

Internet:
There is free Wi-Fi only at the resort lobby and library (not in the rooms).

This resort is one of its kind. It is unspoiled, charming, not what most people would choose and definitely not over crowded by tourists at all. Still if you prefer some action and live, Phuket and Krabi is just a 25 min boat ride away. If you like a quite getaway, this is the place to be.

My friend got married at Koh Yao Yai Village and I made the trip to attend. After living in Southeast Asia for so long, it was unbelievable to me that not only had I never heard of this island, many local Thais were also unfamiliar with it. From Phuket airport it's 45 minutes by taxi and then a 20 minute speedboat ride to the island. An open air old school songthaew picked us up and it was a 15 minute ride to the resort.

The resort was amazing. If you had never traveled to a remote tropical island, this is exactly what you would imagine. Bungalows, pineapples, natural sculptures and thoughtful art were at every turn. Most bungalows had a large patio area which featured a lounge type bed with mosquito net, two sun chairs and hospitality features such as a hot water kettle and refrigerator were here. Inside, the room had an HD TV and was clean and rustic. The bathroom was as large as the sleeping area, with pareos, pool towels, bath towels. The shower was outdoors with natural smelling soap, shampoo and conditioner. Staff was helpful and cleaned regularly. Because the shower was outside, leaves would fall into the area and clog the drain so that could be a bummer. A mean looking frog visited the shower and stayed there until he had to be manually removed by staff.

The wedding I attended was the largest that the resort had ever had so I think they were trying to keep up with the number of requests they were receiving. The breakfast, which is included, is an impressive spread of cereals, omelets, local fruit, etc. However at lunch, service is slow. A lowlight for me was the sports massage I got at the spa. My therapist wasn't very strong and I asked him twice for more pressure and he and the other therapist laughed after my second request. I wouldn't recommend services at the spa in general because I got the impression that the therapists aren't trained properly.

The resort would be perfect for a honeymoon or a getaway where you're seeking isolation. There's only one other resort on the island and the Village is much nicer, although you are certainly paying for it. The beach isn't very attractive or meant for swimming so most guests stayed in the pool areas. Also, free wi-fi! But not in the rooms unless you're close to hotspots like the reception area. This is a place where you don't want to tell many people because you don't want it to be overrun with tourists. It's wonderful and charming and when you're ready for some action, Phuket is across the way.

On arrival: a delicious fruit drink, freshly made on the spot
(and we got a drink on departure too, while waiting for the taxi).
After check in: a plate of fruits delivered at our door,
In the bathroom : beautiful colourful sari's , big towels and a bag to carry your swimming stuff in.
In the living, funny lamps that you will never forget , hand made details making you smile all day.
In the bedroom: wouw what a view, Two showers, what a luxury, but grate fun to use simultaneously.
And the terrace.... what to say.... paradise indeed.
2 swimming pools, a sauna, a library, truly kind reception- and cleaning- staff, beautiful views, a restaurant with affordable wines, and on top of that all: excellent bikes for rent : we biked the whole island and even took the bikes with us to kao yao noy (15 min by boat). on our way back, the water was gone, so we had to walk to the shore trough undeap waters a bit, but the kind people of kao yao yai did not allow us to carry our bikes on our shoulders, they did it for us. A truly remarkable place and a great stay.

Room Tip: we stayed in the sea bungalows

We arrived by boat and took a taxi to the resort, taking approx 20 mins. On arrival we were given a warm welcome and presented with a tasty welcome drink. We were driven to our bungalow set in lush greenery. Our host showed us how to work all of the amenities and helped us with our luggage. The room looks and was great. We loved having an outdoor shower and watching the Ghekkos. As we are situated in such green surroundings, there are some unusual noises but were not disturbing. The amenities were good. We slept well. Good range of Tv channels. Wifi was poor through out the complex but they do offer free computers with internet access in the library. The main pool (infinity) is amazing. Probably the best pool we have ever used in a hotel complex before. Breakfast is yummy with a large variety to choose from. All other meals, drinks and gifts in the shop are expensive. We found two restaurants within walking distance outside of the complex, both nice. We would have liked to have taken a couple of excursions but we found them too be rather pricy so instead we hired bicycles for a day. They are well maintained and have good suspension. The map they provide is poor. There is not much to do but we enjoyed the peaceful location to unwind and relax in the sun.

Room Tip: After exploring around we were glad that we had not booked a sea view room as you can barely see the...

We stayed at the garden villa and loved the greeneries we can see around. The best thing is definitely the peacefulness of the place and the pool is a great asset. The buffet breakfast was excellent too. We live in Phuket and it was a good getaway weekend. Heard that the hotel has a plan to expand - just hoping that it will try to remain as green as it was and adding more native plants and recreating more natural habitats for birds would do them good since the beach is not their best attraction.
