“Nice place to stay”
Reviewed November 15, 2012

What a pleasant find. The rooms are the cleanest I’ve seen. Beds comfy. AC in the evening when there is electricity. Breakfast was basic but ok. The ladies here are friendly. They did a good job with our laundry but was expensive as charge per item. Overall we really like RIung, very nice people. Go RUMAH Makan Muriah for fab food and they will sort you out with Captain Beduyih who will take you on a tour of the islands for 350 000.

first we went to bintang hotel which was a desolated place that looked like it needed renovation although it was supposed to be relatively new.
Then we went to pondok which looked much better. At least there were some other guests and it has a nice garden.
The room is really basic, not cosy but it's Flores and according to that it was a good place. It was really hot so we were glad to have airco. Electricity is only available between 6 pm and 6 Am. The next door power plant makes a lot of noice.
Breakfast was really basic nothing special.
We payed 300.000 rp for a room with airco . Little bit overprized but there is no much choice left. Staff was shy and friendly .

Riung is a gloomy place that looks desolated, hardly Any tourists make the trip. We came from bajawa and the road to riung is very bad, but doable.
We wanted to visit the 17 Islands but there were no guides in town. The office was closed and the harbour was empty. Finally we arranged a trip via a friend of our driver. He asked to much but was the only guide we found. He seemed friendly at first but when we booked, this disappeared.
We heard that most people book their trip in advance.
The 17 Islands were nice to see, but because of the atmosphere in town i don't know if i would recommend other travellers going there. You might consider spending more time in Moni or bajawa.

During my travel around Flores island i can say, If you compare this place with others around, for sure you can say that is not bad at all.
I just arrive here to see the 17 islands, and this place to take a rest 1 or 2 night, is good.
Hot water, nice staff.Better than other place in Flores for sure.

There is not a lot of choice in Riung for a hotel and Pondok SVD is probably one of the best in this town.
The rooms are set around a small garden/terrace where children can play and where you can sit and enjoy the evening.
We stayed there during Idul Fitri, the end of Ramadhan, so the hotel was full and a bit noisy. But the rooms is clean and there is no hot water (but Riung is hot so it's all right).
Breakfast is OK as well and included in the price of the room (200.000 Rp/night).

In Riung there are no many options to sleep, so we can say may be is the best one. Staff is not helpful, maybe due to language limitations. Basic place with a lot of triple rooms. Good value-quality balance. Buy a good insecticide!!! Located 15 minutes walk from the small port of the village.

We had two nights in Pondok SVD and it ended up being a positive experience. First point is that it was hard to find - there are two entrances and the one that looked like the front seemed locked and abandoned - all the action is at the rear which is down the street before. There are also two sets of rooms, which might account for different reviews. Ours seemed to be newer ones. They were very clean and nice. We had to bargain on the room price – came down from 375,000 to 300,000 for a triple with air con. Overall we found the room clean and comfortable. Sheets, towels, soap and toilet paper were all provided, as was some water in bottles (a nice touch). Electricity is due to go 24 hours some time next year. Currently electricity (inc aircon) starts about 6pm and runs until around 7am. The generator is noisy, but once in our room with the aircon running we couldn't hear it. Aircon worked, but took a few hours to get the temp in the room down. Cold water shower but it really did not matter as it was so hot there.
Breakfast was included. Not nice for us. Bread rolls with spreads. My partner is actually not able to eat bread at all and I dont really like it much. We asked (politely) for something else and were happy to pay. We were brought some great fried rice on the first morning and (on request) fruit the second morning. I don’t think they actually charged us for this. The staff were all very friendly and seemed eager to help us and make our stay a happy one.
We ate dinner there two nights. They have a set menu for 50,000-60,000 which we thought we couldn’t eat after a big lunch, so we just ordered some fish, vegies, rice and soup ‘ala carte’. It ended up being really delicious (the set meals looked good too). And very cheap. I think two nights’ dinners for 2 adults and 2 small kids cost us about $15 including beer.
While I’m at it, some notes on the town itself. It’s very quiet and it’s hard to see why anyone would go there except for the boat trips. We did, however, catch a brief look at the Riung Lizard – in the front yard of our hotel when we arrived. But just the one look.
We were told asking prices for boat trips start at 800,000 but that we should pay 600,000 or even 500,000 including lunch, for a family of 4 . The first guy we spoke to offered 600,000. His name was Arin, so you could ask for him. It was all day – 9am-5pm. Involved a visit to the flying fox island – that was much more interesting than I expected. There were also two island visits and two long stops for snorkelling. IMPORTANT! Booking a snorkelling trip does NOT mean they will supply snorkelling equipment! Fortunately we had some of our own, which they borrowed from us later to go spear fishing!
They brough fish and squid along for lunch and on one of the islands the boat guys built a fire and cooked it for lunch. Fantastic! We has an awesome day really, all round. I think it was almost worth the extremely long, difficult drive to get there from Bajawa and extremely long drive to Mone to get out of there. On the whole... very, very beautiful and great fun, but very remote and the snorkelling and very beautiful islands looked very much similar to those very beautiful islands that we saw around Labuan Bajo, which is much easier to get to. No regrets, but won’t be telling people they MUST go to Riung, either.

Representative hotel in Riung with Fan, Air conditioning rooms, Private shower and the room space big enough. In the night bit noise due to close to electricity power. The light will turn on at 18.00 Pm - turn off at 06.00 Am.

Room Tip: Better and quit one just near receptionist
