“Disappointing stay with few bright spots”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 6, 2013

General Overview - Resort is located in a great central location for exploring. Views are phenomenal! I booked this resort with understanding it was 4 Star. Perhaps 20 years ago it was but no longer. Villa was updated but rest of the resort is tired and needing attention in many areas. I would not be happy if I were an owner. We even had an owner slip a note in our door asking if we were interested in buying.

Electricity - I saw a few remarks about this and we were worried as we had a 3 Bdrm Villa. We arrived late the first day of check in and checked out a day early (total of 6 days) and our total bill was 54 pounds. This was with very strict discipline of only turning on heat in the room we were in and careful hot water useage. I would hate to see what it could be during the winter as all heat is electric.

Staff - In general, the staff were polite but not very helpful. Tried several times to get information on local area and each time we were directed to the village hall to collect flyers.

Restaurant - The Restaurant was closed (roof leak). This was the most disappointing part as we specifically booked the resort based on on site dining. There is no estimated date for it to open again. We were never made aware of this when calling in to the resort and when checking the website. There is a bar that serves food (food was decent) but bar was not adequately staffed, service was poor and it felt like we were inconveniencing them with our presence.

Facilities - Our villa was the best part and modernized. Rest of the resort was tired and needing work. Pool was decent although the hot water in the showers was out several days we were there. Village Hall advertised squash and other court sports but the courts were used for storing chairs and old carpets. Free WIFI was nice but it rarely worked and no one knew anything about it. Turns out the router is located in another room which hinders the signal.

Overall - If you can get a very low rate (we paid too much for what we got out of it) it is not a bad stay, just not 4 star.

Have just returned from a weeks timeshare swap in flat 12 in the Mansion House. It was perfect for just my husband and I but would have been squashed for 4. It was warm, adequately furnished and equipped, with stunning views from two sides of the surrounding mountains. All the staff we came in contact with were very helpful and the welcome meeting gave us some very useful information for suggested places to visit, in particular the train trip along the coast to Phwelli, amazing scenery all the way along. We didnt use many of the facilities so cant comment on them,we either cooked for ourselves or ate out, the Riverside pub just down the road in Pennal was excellent. We really enjoyed our week here and would return.

This place is in a fantastic setting, we hired a bungalow for four nights and the accommodation was lovely (although cold) and very well equipped. When we arrived we were greeted by a very grumpy man on reception, never cracked a smile and he was bordering on being rude. Not a great start to the holiday. The bungalows have electric heaters and the place cools down as soon as you turn off the heaters. We did not have the heating on overnight and it was absolutely freezing in the morning when we woke up, took well over an hour to heat up. We were gobsmacked when we came to check out and were told the electricity was £97 for 4 nights! We arrived late on Tuesday night and checked out on Saturday at 9.30 am so we only had 3 days in the place. I complained and they did agree to reduce the bill slightly but it was still ridiculously expensive. Very disappointing as it spoilt our holiday and left a very nasty feeling.

This place is lovely, great country to look at, nice places to visit, great coastline. But all ruined by unhelpful, rude staff and incredibly cold bungalows to stay in, which they charge an obscene amount of money for the electricity to keep it warm. Great place to visit... terrible place to stay.

Room Tip: Anywhere you don't have to pay for the electricity as a extra cost.

Standard of cleaning was poor.
Grill in the oven had not been cleaned for a long time and smoked out the kitchen when it was turned on. (Staff did clean it when it was reported).
One WC not cleaned before our visit. (Reported and was cleaned)
Another WC had a water leak and water was on the bathroom floor. (This was reported but nothing done by staff during our visit).
One bathroom generally dirty as it was not cleaned under the taps or handrails.
TV didn't work as the aerial was disconected.
A little more effort by Plas Talgarth and they would not have had this feedback!

I live locally and used to spend many a Friday and Saturday night at the great family bar area. However recently the bar has gone down hill drastically!
Most recently a few of us visited the bar at 6pm on a Friday night, and upon ordering 3 pints of lager, could only have 2, due to the beer running out. The staff where not allowed in the cellar to change the barrel? And more so, even if they could have got into the cellar there wasnt a spare barrel as the company only allow for one barrel a week to be ordered! I feel genuinely sorry for the especiallY friendly staff having to make excuses for management!

On other occasions we have driven to Plas Talgarth or headed to the bar after a swim at the leisure centre to find the Bar closed as early as 8pm! yes it may be closed due to being quiet, but if the beer didnt run out then maybe more people would go there!

As recent as 2 years ago this was a booming and popular bar, the recent management has destroyed all atmosphere and custom!

I wont be back, not when the pub in the village has a great range of beer and brilliant atmosphere. if your staying in Plas Talgarth, get your self down the Glan yr Afon!

Room Tip: Rooms and facilitys forom what I know are good. Bar and restaurant aint!

2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 18, 2012

18 December 2012
We have been coming to the Plas Talgarth Country club for over 25 years as my father is an owner but in recent years we have found ourselves having to complain more and more. Firstly if you happen to come during winter time and have to use the inadequate heating system, be aware that the electricity bill at the end will be extremely high. We recently stayed for a 2 nights and our bill was £23, we had to have the heating on as the apartment was so cold, it felt warmer outside. This was irritating as I had telephoned earlier that day to request for the heating to be put on for arrival as we have very young children, one only being 12 months old, this had not been done and because the apartment had not been used for sometime it took until the morning of our departure to warm up. We also had a mock fire place that turned out to be just a fan heater that blows out cold air. We resorted to sitting under a duvet to keep warm, which had not been supplied with a duvet cover. The dishwasher's in most of the apartments we have stayed in are substandard as you find you have to wash everything again by hand. The swimming pool, Jacuzzi and steam room are usually the highlight of our visit, especially for the children but the water was cool and so was the general atmosphere, the steam room had a very short cycle so you were left sitting in a luke warm room after around 3 minutes of steam and the changing rooms were also cold, it is not a pleasant experience especially for small children. However the reception area was lovely and warm for the staff, so we were able to warm up in there. We had a disappointing meal at the Dyfi View restaurant, with the chef being a self-confessed barman, removed from his position in the Farm House bar and put into the role of head chef at the restaurant, we had pub grub food at restaurant prices and the Farm House house bar was closed, this was a Saturday night. At the end of our stay we took our complaints to the manager where she took no local responsibility and blamed everything on head office, she offered no apology, no compensation and not even a hot cup of coffee after our cold swim. We had been planning a stay over the Christmas holidays with our extended family of 25 but after our recent visits have decided to go elsewhere. The general attitude of all staff members is one of inconvenience and irritation of you being there. This was not the pleasant and relaxing holiday that was offered.
