Decided to eat here for the views as we were on a sailing boat but hiring a car for the day to see the island. The hire car Sat Nav sent us to the wrong valley so make sure you have clear directions.
Had read the mixed reviews on the accomodation but as we were only eating I ignored them. The service was prompt enough but not many smiles. The starters and main courses were again fine but not outstanding. However, the puddings were amazing! There were 4 of us and we chose 4 different puddings then shared. My favourite was the almond ice cream but all were very good.
I would recommend coming here to get out of Funchal and try some local dishes but not for a fine dining experience, apart from the puds of course.

The hotel sits over 2000 ft high, in its own steep gardens, on a ridge between two valleys, and alongside a mountain road. This is a good place to unwind and relax for a few days.
There are panoramic views of mountains and valley from both the restaurant terrace and the detached bar balcony.
There have been some recent wild fires (hotel evacuated at one point) so there are burnt areas, but this does not detract from the great scenery of the valley.
Room was a standard sized twin which we got for £22 per night each B&B, impressive value! (after much searching). I guess rooms 3 to 7 are best located in the main building.
Decent restaurant and you can dine outside on the terrace with great views if you want. There were 22 meat & fish main courses plus pasta. Prices were very reasonable and all staff were friendly and helpful.
We were happy to stay at the hotel for our 3 nights, but If you want to go out to eat or drink you will have to drive to other towns on the mountain road at night.
We were here at the end of August which was hot and humid at night, even by Madeiran standards, and the room could have done with air con, but usually I think it would be ok without.
If I need to chill out in future I'll be back at the Pousada dos Vinhaticos half way up the mountain to relax!

The hotel is in a stunning position and it is a shame that there is only limited public transport particularly as the walks in the area are amazing. The food is excellent under the new restaurant manager but the hotel is somewhat let down by the reception which is rarely manned and the telephone goes unanswered. This was a particular problem for us on two nights of our stay. The hot water had not been turned on and we returned from a long walk cold and tired wanting only a hot bath. The following two nights we asked the very agreeable waiters to sort it out for us which they did! We would suggest that literature was available at reception and tours organised if guests asked. However the food, the general ambience and the friendly nature of the restaurant manager and staff means that we would return. Hopefully our comments will have been noted and acted upon!

Stayed here for 4 nights over Xmas. We had a lovely room in the annex upper floor log cabin.
The room was comfirtable, smelling of pine-wood with a great view over the valley. A heater was provided as the nights tend to be cooler.
Being on the upper floor we had no noise problem. A minor issue are the beds which has wheels and tend to roll away a bit.... (this could be a bit unfortunate for the lower rooms).

The staff were friendly, polite and communicative. They were not over-bearing or overly-posh or pretentious.
As keen hikers we found the location extremely convenient to get to some of the trails. (We were also fortunate to have very good weather in late December).

The food was good and well value for money (under EUR20/person for 3 course dinner). There was a good selection & variety on the menu. I highly recommend their homemade almond ice-cream.
On Christmas eve, they prepared a huge selection of tasty cakes & puddings for all guests - these were all complimentary and I thought a very nice touch. Well done!

If you like animals, there is a friendly little dog and cat to greet you everyday :o)

We really enjoyed our stay here and would love to return should we ever visit Madeira again.

We visited this hotel for the second time following our first trip in 2009, this time we came equipped with some netting for the windows and a plug-in mosquito zapper which was a cheap and effective way to stop mosquitos buzzing us at night. Some people have said that the hotel is in need of a little updating and whilst this is true, this hotel is not trying to be something it is not - it is authentic, rustic and far off the beaten track in a location that is simply stunning beyond words. The hotel offers a simple charm and definitely would appeal to nature lovers and those who like to put on a pair of walking boots and go out exploring with a map, avoiding the coachloads of people who get ferried about to viewpoints, sit down to have a coffee or a beer, and visit the local trinket store before being whisked off back to their spa hotel in funchal, kidding themselves they've been out exploring the island.

The central location gives easy access to the whole island and if you are serious about exploring, a good map book (walk madeira - shirley and mike whitehead) and torch (for the levada tunnels) are essential pieces of kit.

Back to the hotel, the breakfasts are what I would describe as standard and the evening meals are very good (nearest other restaurants are about 20 mins away) and reasonably priced. We took the half board option and you get a limited menu (selections from the al-la carte menu) which changes each night. If you don't fancy what's on offer, you can order a-la-carte and pay the modest difference in price. You can also make changes, such as fries and salad instead of potatoes and vegatables, the staff are very friendly and accomodating. On the subject of the staff, they obviously see thousands of guests every year and at first seemed a little distant, but once we got speaking with them, they really opened up and were knowledgable and very engaging with us and I cannot speak highly enough of them all, and on the odd occasion a guest had a (minor) problem, their service recovery was excellent and very customer friendly!

So, in summary, if you want satellite TV, a pool and spa services along with a price tag to match, don't come here. If you appreciate the simple things in life, adore rustic charm and nature, with genuine freindly staff, this place is a good value option.

Room Tip: ask to stay in the mountain lodge, a separate 16 roomed oversized log cabin about 30 metres away fro...

Stayed one night during our recent two week stint in Portugal. Were very much looking forward to a stay in a Pousada and expected much better accommodations. We were told upon check-in that we should not open our windows due to mosquitos. With no air conditioning we were sweltering in the heat and got very little sleep. The place really needs some updates to qualify as a pousada. The staff was excellent and had a great talk with one of the staff regarding the history of Portugal, etc. The location is spectacular, once you find it, and the views are phenomenal. We had dinner and breakfast there and both were very good. With a few tweaks, I could probably recommend this place, but not at this point.
