“Dated rooms, friendly service”
Reviewed March 7, 2013

I know Mariehamn inside out, but I have never stayed at Arkipelag as a hotel guest before. In the summer time this is the place to be, to party and be seen. The atmosphere by the pool and in the al fresco restaurant and bar is almost Mediterranean in July. But the hotel rooms are just sad. At least the room I stayed in, facing the street, had not seen a renovation tool since about 1987 (the bathroom was somewhat updated thank goodness...), nor had any money been spent on interior design like flat screen TVs or new bedcovers etc. Having said that the room was clean, the bed comfortable and the staff in the reception was friendly and helpful. Also, free high speed wifi in the room!

Room Tip: Towards the sea!

Hotell Arkipelag looks like East-Germany or Soviets. There is nothing alluring in the house. Having said that Arkipelag is well worth looking inside. Renovation has been done well. Hotel rooms are somewhat spacious, modern and clean. There's a balcony on each room.

Room Tip: Rooms by the sea are quieter.

We spent just one night at the hotel, but we were actually impressed with what we saw and experienced.
The room faced the seaside with a large balcony. Perfect! The decor of the room was slightly dated and old-fashioned (the 70s or 80s maybe?), but in good shape anyway. The room was very spacious and spotlessly clean! Probably the cleanest hotel room we have ever experienced. You could probably have eaten from the bathroom floor.
Comfortable beds, uncomfortable pillows. A decent selection of tv-channels. And the staff was very pleasant and attentive.
The complimentary breakfast contained most of the things you expect, nothing to complain about.
We also enjoyed dinner in their restaurant Oliven in the evening and the quality of the food and service was just fine. However, while the staff there was generally okay, the level of knowledge they had regarding the food and the vine they were serving was a bit lacking.
All in all, recommended :)

Room Tip: The rooms facing the sea-side are better value for money than the ones.

Good news is that now the hotel has free internet in the rooms. The bad news that compared to our previous visit the rooms and the hotel needs to be updated. If feels like being in the 70-s. We had ordered a double bed and got of course a twin room. The receptions help with this was that the beds can "easily be moved together". Our TV stopped working, we called the reception and they recommended us to pull out and back all the cables, which is fine except when you need to move the TV to do that, it almost fell down to the floor when we did that. the room was spacious, and a large toilet with good toiletries. The breakfast room, if far away, first time we got lost in the corridors, and we met another couple who were also lost. After finding it, we were a bit disappointed, first about half of the room was staff who were having their breakfast in the same room, then also what is offered was not of very high quality. The juices were undrinkable, tasted like drinking chemicals, the porridge was like water and the bread must have been 2-3 days old. The cookies for the desert looked like stuff bought from the 1 euro store. Second day we went to a cafe for breakfast instead. In the basement in a nice nightclub to which you have entrance through the hotel, that was a nice place to visit.

Room Tip: we stayed in 320, which was rather quiet.

Relatively large hotel for the size of Mariehamn.
This is a rather dated hotel but it is sufficiently comfortable to make this a small negative issue.
It is near the ferry terminal but you will need a taxi unless you know the way.
The food at lunch and dinner was very good.
The room was larger than I expected.
I would happily stay here again.

Imagine a 1960s shopping precinct and cross it with the civic centre of a small town and you have the Arkipelag. It was built in the 60s/'70s as part of the parliament complex and is very 'concrete'. Indeed the complex is so complex that it is difficult to find your way in, out or around the hotel with many locked doors and dark passages. It is desparately in need of an update and although it is still generally clean and well ordered it is showing signs of wear. The staff varied enormously in their attitudes. One receptionist couldn't have been more cheerful and helpful, whilst another was so dour and guarded the complimentary coffee machine in the lobby so ferociously, that we stopped using it when she was on duty. The rooms overlooking the sea are the best bet as those on the landward side overlooked a rather grubby service road. The biggest disappointment was breakfast. This was served in a huge 'soviet style' dining room which was dark and depressing. Staff service was poor with tables uncleared, empty dishes in the buffet unreplenished and not very clean. There didn't seem to be much choice of hotels in Mariehamn and this was very expensive so if you can find others which are better value - take them. As the islands have become a destination for booze cruises from Sweden and Finland maybe they think their customers won't be bothered by poor service and dismal surroundings but we were.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the sea.

First of all, location and service very good. But when you enter the room, you time travel to the 90's. This is supposed to be the best hotel in Mariehamn, but still the rooms are very old fashioned and some how it feeled dirty.

Food is great and the casino located in the same building is very nice too.

Because of the high price, I'm not recommending this.
