We visited Solaris apartments during the last week of July and the first week of August 2013. We visited as a family of four including two children aged 8 and 10. On arrival we were welcomed by Kostas, offered a drink from the bar and shown to our accommodation. We had booked a superior apartment which had basic cooking facilities and a small living area . The bedrooms are spacious with ample storage space. The air conditioning was excellent and was a great help in the July heat of 40 deg+. The external seating area is very limited and couldn't accommodate more than 2 people at any one time and would not be suitable for family dining. The apartments are throughly cleaned Mon to Fri and clean towels are provided daily. Kassiopi as a whole is well suited to families and couples with only a few bars aimed at the younger age group. However, we did get the feeling Kasipoi had seen busier times with a number of bars, hotels and gifts shops closed and boarded up, although this hadn't yet reached the tipping point where it spoilt the overall feel of the resort. Kassipoi is still a beautiful place with a lovely harbour and beach. There are many tavernas offering a full range of food and some have great views over the harbour or beach, our favorite was Kima. Solaris is a small cluster of apartments based around 2 swimming pools and one pool bar. The apartments are located central to the Kassiopi main street, harbour and beach. The pool is open to none residents, but during the day only 10-15% of sun loungers are occupied, giving a feeling of emptiness at times. The pools appear to be well maintained and provides ample room for both swimming and playing. A pool table is available at 1.5€ per. The general appearance of the whole site could do with some improvements as grass is growing on the pool terrance and in some areas the place looked unkept. see attached photos. The pool bar serves good food which is reasonably priced and of good quality. The drinks are expensive and you're not allowed to bring food or drink from your room to the pool area, one of our group was told off for bringinging a cup of coffee to the pool. The aim of this policy is to get you to pay 2€ for 150ml of coke or fanta poured from a bottle that costs as little as 1.5€ for 1.5ltr at the local shop. Small spirits (<125ml including mixer) cost 4.5€. Beers cost 3€ for a large bottle of Mythos. During our 2 week stay we were served nibbles (crisps/nuts) twice and this isn't the local norm, elsewhere we were regularly served crisps or nuts when ordering drinks. Our only gripe about Solaris is the atmosphere created by the staff. Kostas and his family don't appear to be enjoying their work and this was noted by a number of guests, sometimes creating the feeling that you're not welcome or even a hinderance. They work hard, but seem to do everything themselves and sometimes with resentment. The BBQ night is good fun, however the food is average and the salads are definitely not all you can eat as advertised. The owners use the pool bar area for family gatherings. Kostas was quick to turn off the lights in the evening, even on the BBQ night, but was happy to keep the lights on well beyond a similar time when entertaining friends. One evening, Kostas, in a very abrupt manner stopped our children playing pool at 10:45pm, whilst continuing to play music, entertain and drink with family and friends to well beyond 1am. This forced us to move back into town to entertain a group of children from 3 different families. Overall I get a feeling Solaris has seen busier times and this has rubbed off on the attitude of the staff resulting in some of the smaller details slipping. I know many people visit Solaris and swear to return, but unfortunately this wasn't our experience. You can still have a good holiday here, but there are things that happen that will disappoint even the most tolerant of holiday maker. Kids are welcome, but they don't get any special treatment and sometimes appear to annoy the owners and staff. Overall, we enjoyed our stay due to the people we met, but won't be making a quick return.
