“Delightful Surprise on Camino”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 4, 2013

What a delightful surprise whilst walking Camino. We stayed in the actual Hotel (albergue attached if you would prefer the cheaper option). Owned and run by a charming family who went out of their way to welcome my son and I to their outstanding Hotel. We were accompanied to our room, and waved goodbye as we set off following morning. Our room was tastefully furnished and super comfy. We enjoyed pre-dinner drinks in a sunny courtyard with complimentary tapas. The restaurant offers a very reasonably priced, yet high quality "pilgrim meal". Breakfast was also excellent. Our experience here was one of the highlights of our Camino and would thoroughly recommend. If you can stretch your budget stay at the Hotel.

The hotel also doubles as an albergue for those Camino walkers who prefer the more challenging pleasures of shared accommodation. All I can speak for is the more luxurious side of the establishment sleeping wise since communal sleeping at the end of a day's walking is not for me.

The welcome we had here was excellent. The building has great charm and history and the modern improvements are sympathetic. Our bedroom was large, well furnished with a modern bathroom with bath and shower over. We slept well in a big, comfortable bed.

While there are other places to eat in the village, after sampling a plate of black pudding and a hefty sandwich for lunch for not very much, we decided to eat in the bar of the hotel. They do a pilgrim's menu in the restaurant but we tend not to want three or four courses in the evening so settled for a plato combinado for 6 or 7 euros. Drinks are cheap, as they are in many of the towns on the Camino.

Breakfast was plentiful and coffee was made happily to order.

Service here was excellent throughout. The young man on reception was kindness and good humour itself and the barman patient and amused by our slightly off the cuff requests. My broken Spanish was welcomed but English was spoken by almost everyone in the place. An excellent base for touring or for r and r on the Camino.

Luxury and overwhelming kindness found here. I arrived early as it had begun to rain so I took a bus to Villafranca from Espinosa del Camino. The woman receptionist did not speak English but her welcoming smile spoke volumes. The young lady, a new housekeeper, did speak English and told me she was cleaning my room first and could I wait. I happily did so on the couches lining the long beautiful hallway where you enjoy the free wifi as it is not available in the individual rooms. (Hey, there wasn't any such thing in 1377 when this remodeled hotel was originally constructed!). My room #101 featured one double bed with nice mattress and plenty of pillows, a desk and chair, TV, a lovely clean bathroom with nice towels and a great view of the church bell tower right outside my window. I also enjoyed a great dinner for 12 euros with plenty of choices for each course and a nice wine to go with your meal. You won't leave hungry. The included-in-your-room-price breakfast features toasted bread, ham, cheese, yogurt, great coffee and packaged sweets. It was a special treat along the Camino and well worth a stop in this tiny town.

We stumbled on this place for lunch and wished we had booked in as a stopover, but it was not on the itinerary. Beautifully built and decorated with exceptional staff. We arrived before official lunchtime but they brought it forward for us. Very courteous and helpful towards peregrinos. We had a lovely lunch in the restaurant and the service was unbelievably friendlyl. ( Peregrion menu 10€!).
No knowledge of the accommodation but it would be certain to be great. Our advice would be to adjust your itinerary to have a stopover here. The owner is very hospitable. He showed us out a huge old rear door that opened directly onto the Camino route, wishing us 'Buen Camino'. Outstanding.

Stayed in the albergue section on El Camino pilgrimage. The service is excellent, the staff wonderful and very helpful. The restaurant good and the food plentiful. The owner's commitment to allow pilgrim walkers access to the hotel's facilities is admirable and a win/win situation. The "very good" ratings is not a reflection of management not trying, rather that albergue facilities are near impossible to keep in excellent condition.

It was our final stop on the 9 day pilgrimage to Santiago de compostella. After days of sleeping on the bunk beds and queueing to have a shower we decided to treat ourselves to this three star hotel and we loved it!! We soaked our tired feet and bodies in the bath, slept in the big comfortable bed and enjoyed beautiful views from the window.
We were spoiled for choice during our dinner and breakfast and we didn't want to leave when the time came.
Because of the character or our travels we didn't have huge expectations but this hotel was the whole new category. Beautiful building, interesting decor, great service and heavenly comfort.
We will come back next year to Villafranca to carry on Camino de Santiago and I'm ashamed to admit but this hotel will be our starting point...
