Parador de Santo Domingo de la Calzada

We were walking the camino. It was good to have a hotel after the albergue last night. the hotel room was good, the central hall wonderful (the old pilgrim hostel). However the seating outside reeked of tobacco smell. Interestingly, hotels.com did not do a good job, the reservation we made took 12 hours to show up at the hotel. I would not use hotels.com in spain.

The room was oke, the lounge is beautiful. As it is in the center of the town we hoped for a nice historic surrounding. Besides the cathedral we where very disappointed. Specially the crises was noticed as half of the shops where closed/for sale. We will not be back here. Service was oke.

The parador is ideally located for those who want to be in the heart of the town, near the cathedral, ayuntamiento, tourist information center and restaurants. The history of the town is interesting and will have special meaning for those involved in the camino de Santiago. I generally like paradors very much and did find this one to have an incredible central lounge or public area where having wine or coffee and reading was enjoyable. The room though was very ordinary, on the small side and the decor rather bland.

Room Tip: Our room faced the plaza and on a Saturday night there were many people wandering about, talking and...

When you convert medieval pilgrim lodging into a hotel, you have advantages and responsibilities. It seemed to me that this Parador missed a few of them, starting with the welcome given at the front desk to these two travellers by some of the most glum reception staff that we met in the dozen hotels and b and b's we used in Spain. Perhaps it was because they didn't want to give an impression of friendliness given that they probably expected a complaint from us about the view that was afforded of this celebrated Camino stop from the room they gave us.

As it was, we were so tired from our walking that we couldn't have cared less. The room, despite the blank walls that it looked out on, was cavernous and the bathroom was huge. The furnishing had a touch of the Spanish colonial about it but was inoffensive and the bed was big and comfortable.Breakfast was a plentiful and varied buffet and, after a slight hiatus caused by the influx of a clutch of guests, service was prompt.

Unfortunately, the same couldn't be said for service in the lounge the night before. I had to hunt down my order after some 10 minutes of waiting for it to arrive so the pleasure of having a nightcap in the atmospheric and handsome hotel lounge was somewhat blunted.Given that there was only one other couple in the place at the time, this was rather disappointing.

There was nothing particularly wrong about this place: the room and breakfast were both satisfactory but then they ought to be for 148 Euros. Perhaps it was because we booked on the Golden Years tariff that we got the poor view and lack of welcome or perhaps it's that some places aren't very good at making you feel valued. Whatever the reason, the irony of a Parador named after Santo Domingo de la Calzada making us feel rather fobbed off wasn't lost on us.

Room Tip: Ask for a view and see what happens.

This village is well worth a visit, especially on a day of a drum band competition. The parador is attractive and in the middle of the busy village, next to the cathedral. I would recommend this as a quiet stop-off with a some culture and a little bit of entertainment. The village is busy with pilgrims passing thorough on the the way to Santiago de Compostela.

This was my first Parador (ancient, historic buildings that the Spanish government converted into hotels), so it has a special place in my heart. It's situated on a beautiful little plaza across from the Church (which is a "must visit"). The furnishings are historic and comfortable, the service was outstanding, and excellent food in their restaurant. And affordable too. I highly recommend this Parador !

We were walking on the Camino de Santiago and thought to allow ourselves
a nice break. The room we were given looked originally just OK (though it allowed us to look at the entrance of the beautiful Church Santa Maria).
It became much more interesting when a "fiesta" begun and cows were freed to run around with the local population teasing them. It was just happening Under our window! I took great video. This show is indeed not guaranteed for every stay.
Just one point down. We needed access to internet. It was available but slow, slow, slow...
