“Starting point for the Camino de Santiago”
Reviewed May 25, 2013

This was an ideal place to start the Camino. Tastefully decorated and professionally run. It had the timeless quality of an old country house - though slap bang on the main street. The breakfast was excellent, just the thing to set you on your way, and I got to practice my awful French.

Room Tip: There is a lot of traffic on the street ouside (it links France and Spain), try and get an interior...

Nothing like cookie cutter chain hotels. Itzalpea - Guest House - is on the main street before the Medieval walls of the historic ville. Just 5 minutes from the train station, it has several restaurants on the same street. Room with a bath was large size, maybe a little dark, and had some period pieces of furniture. Common areas are very quaint. Staff was very accommodating regarding 6:30AM breakfast as I left early for my camino walk. They also helped organize the transfer of my bags to Roncesvalles.

After the train ride from Bayonne the hotel is a 5 minute walk from the station and at the junction turn left and the Itzalpea is immediately on the left. Helpful staff and quaint accommodation. Due to my mistake the hotel had us booked in for the following day! The problem was quickly sorted and we were offered another room for the one night stay. Good breakfast. Wi-Fi in public areas. Access to St Jean through city archway almost opposite. A very good first night stop a prior to commencing the Camino. Can recommend the restaurant next door.

The hotel is well situated on the way into town from the railway station and near a selection of restaurants. My room was quaint, comfortable and had a great view to the mountains.Breakfast was friendly and simple, a great last comfy stop before starting the Camino de Santiago.

Itzalpea is a small hotel just outside the walls of St Jean.It is also a cafe and salon de the but doesn't do evening meals. There are plenty of eating options within a short distance of the place, one next door.

The room we had was bright and stylish, with plenty of space, some nice pieces of furniture,a comfortable bed and a well stocked bathroom. The whole building has a family feel to it,with antique furniture and objets d'art dotted about the place. We were made to feel very welcome-a request was for a hair dryer immediately seen to,an alarm clock loaned to us when we asked for an early morning call and I was given careful assistance in accessing the hotel's wifi.

The alarm clock proved to be superfluous as we were knocked up for the excellent breakfast at our requested time. There was a subdued but excited atmosphere about the place in the early morning as walkers from the hotel and elsewhere prepared themselves for the day's march to Roncevalles. It was almost as if the hotel had taken on a sort of "base camp" role. If I ever do the walk into Spain again,I won't think of starting from anywhere other than Itzalpea.

This hotel is small and family run - they are very friendly and clearly take pride in it. Although not particularly impressive from the outside, our room was great - lovely view of the mountain and very clean. The owner even got up early to ensure we had our breakfast at 6am which we didn't expect, and it was great - some fruit, yoghurt, bread, cereal - perfect start to first day on the Camino.

Room Tip: One with a view - we had one but not sure if they all did.
