Delightful one night stay at Jean Francois' pretty home. Perched on the riverbank on a very peaceful side of the town. We would definitely return for a longer stay. Comfortable rooms.
Ours looked out over the river and the sound of the water soothed us to sleep. Although if you prefer not to hear the river the rooms on the other side of the house are equally good.
Jean Francois provided a typical french breakfast with a huge selection of homemade jams and delicious fresh bread and the local gateau Basque. He was always on hand to provide information and maps or simply have a friendly chat.

Room Tip: I think all the rooms were of an equal standard. If you want to hear the gurgling of the river at ni...

Something about Maison Donamaria and its wonderful host Jean Francois makes you feel that you are not just 'on holiday '. This is a beautiful home - and thanks to Jean Francois - for 5 days we felt that it was home for us too. His warm style , exceptionally dry humour , practical help and total ease with his guests make the entire experience a pleasure. The house is very beautiful. Our room was large and comfy , clean and nicely furnished. The communal breakfast which may feel daunting to some holiday makers was a great part of the day - mainly due to the fact that Jean Francois encouraged conversation and made everyone feel relaxed whether they were joining in or not. Breakfast is included in your room fee and is fabulous - with lots of local jams and honey, good coffee and fruit juices, yogurt , bread and a very good quality Gateau Basque. The location is rural and incredibly peaceful. Just lovely. The short riverside walk into town is really pleasant - St.Jean Pied de Port being a good mix between a down to earth working environment and a tourist destination. Ask JF for tips on eating out. A big plus for me was the tranquil garden and pool where I practised yoga and swam every afternoon. It couldn't have been any better. Thank you Jean Francois!!

Room Tip: The weir , just up river is quite loud - so if you are a light sleeper you may want to ask for a roo...

Jean Francois bent over backwards to help us, offering his private garage to store our motorbike securely (a huge issue as any biker will know) and allowing us to collect it mid afternoon on our day of departure, giving recommendations on good local restaurants, and information on the local history. The room was fantastic - beautifully decorated and so nice to have some space to unpack and move about. Breakfast was plentiful with the biggest range of jams I have ever seen! If you want a peaceful and relaxing break stay here.

Room Tip: We had the room at the back of the house accessed by the stairs in the back yard - lovely view of th...

I spent one night here in September, and I wished I'd booked for more, Jean Francois is a gracious and thoughtful host, the house is like home. The location is wonderful (just outside the old town wall) and the river runs throught the backyard. Breakfast is communal and delicious. All you could want reallly.

Maison Donamaria enjoys a beautiful setting, nestled beside a little bridge, with green fields and trees in abundance. For that alone it is worth staying here, but then it gets even better. The accommodation is comfortable, peaceful and clean, Jean-Francois has collected interesting pieces which draw your attention and invite you to linger, and as host he is thoughtful, considerate and so very kind. I look forward to returning!

I stayed with my husband at the Maison Donamaria for 3 nights at the end of a 100 mile hike from Aire sur l'Adour to St Jean Pied de Port on the pilgrimage route to Compostela. We could not have chosen a better place in which to stay. Jean-Francois is a warm, knowledgeable and considerate host. He even made me a sturdy walking stick cut from a tree in the garden. Our room overlooked the river. We we fell asleep in our comfortable bed, soothed by the rhythmic rushing of the water. We wakened to exuberant birdsong. The breakfasts were delicious. We had a short, charming riverside walk into the town. Marvellous!

Stayed for two nights in the summer with my husband and two teenage boys. Lovely house by the river. The rooms were spotlessly clean with nice towels and linen. Pretty little garden and pool running alongside the river. Jean François the proprietor was charming and friendly.
