Perfectly located family-run hotel steeped in tradition.

The hotel restaurant is good, especially on a warm evening outside on the terrace overlooking the river.

Another eating option: coming out of the hotel if you turn immediately right, cross the road and go through the old archway there is a restaurant on your left, set back a little, that was absolutely rammed with locals at lunchtime. I was sorry that they didn't have room for us!

The town was razed to the ground in 1177 and rebuilt, later with the ramparts and citidel still in use today. At the foot of an important pass through the Pyrenees, Pied de Port (foot of the pass), it was frequently the site of battles between the French and the Spanish.

The hotel has the best location in town, next to the La Nive River, trout can be seen from the terrace tables, rooms can be requested which overlook this charming trout stream and small dam and rapids; ask for #27. Rooms were modern and clean; their restaurant was so good we did not go elsewhere during our three nights. The owner operator, Christine, granddaughter of the 1941 hotel founder; is charming and provides any service you request.

The big weekly market brings in venders from afar and is worth arranging your stay to include this Monday morning attraction. The town is fun for wandering with huge and intemidating citidel high above or along the river into the mountain countryside. The train station is less than 10 minutes walk and conveniently connects to the coastal town of Bayonne and, from there the Bordeaux airport or south to Spain.

We also visited Saint Jean de Luz on the coast with its beautiful harbor and beach. When planning a trip to Basque France, we would skip that town and concentrate on Pied de Port, spending at least three full days and enjoy absorbing their earthy and charming culture.

This 250 year old hotel does not have many frills but a lot of character. As for a room on the river side - the sound of rushing water was incredibly soothing throughout the night. The rooms were spacious and comfortable; the en suites were less good but adequate. The location is excellent, right beside the old part of this pretty town. The price represented decent value for money.

My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Central for one night. It's a good hotel, centrally located on La Nive River. The room was fine, staff was friendly and helpful. Parking in front of the Hotel (if you can get a spot) or on nearby streets is free. The Hotel restaurant is strongly recommended, particularly if you reserve a table on the outdoor terrace overlooking the river, where you can watch some rather large trout rise during dinner. St. Jean Pied de Port is a lively, interesting city, in a beautiful location, and well worth a visit.

Rooms offer good value for a two star in St Jean, others are much more expensive. We had a twin room overlooking the river & it's trout (you can see them). Excellent restaurant with the possibility to eat on the terrace by the river if the weathers OK. 19.50 euro menu very good & service friendly & helpful. We'll certainly go back.
