Owner description: Kapiti Island is one of New Zealand's most visited places for bird watchers. It is an internationally renowned sanctuary and is blessed with an abundance of native and endangered species like Little Spotted Kiwi, Takahe, and the cheeky Kaka who have not survived so well on the mainland. This nature-inspired setting is the perfect place to experience New Zealand's native birds in their natural environment.Kapiti Island is just 40 minutes north of Wellington, New Zealand's capital city. Activities include half and full day nature tours, overnight Kiwi spotting and rare bird tours. The Maori hospitality you will experience on Kapiti Island - one of New Zealand's most precious nature reserves - is unsurpassed.

Good way to go away to a very great experience.
The overnight trip is pretty expensive for what you get. But the island is great set up good walking but you need to be prepared for a long walk up. We were with a 2 year old and it was hard for him but very interesting. We could not go all the way to the top but still it was great.

Visiting Kapiti Island and staying with the Clark family is a wonderful experience for New Zealanders and for international visitors. Their genuine hospitality and manaakitanga are very special. You will get to see a wide range of NZ birds including those rarely seen like the Stitchbird and Kakariki and near extinction like the Takahe, Kokako and Little Spotted Kiwi.
Enjoy kiwi bush, birdlife and hospitality!

Our overnight trip to Kapiti Island ranks as one of the best experiences of my time in New Zealand. Our group of 4 took the water taxi across in the morning, and were met by a friendly DOC guide (all organised by Kapiti Island Nature Tours), who gave us a personal introduction and tour. We were then left to hike to the top of the hill on Kapiti Island, looking for weka and other birds. We found plenty! Around 3 pm we caught the water taxi, as organised, to the north part of the island and were met by the friendly team there with hot tea, coffee and freshly baked scones. We then had time for another walk before dinner, a friendly family affair with our hosts. The kiwi tour in the evening was the highlight, spotting two kiwi and a little blue penguin to boot. Our accommodation was comfortable, our hosts knowledgeable and friendly, and overall it was a wonderful experience for the whole group. I can't recommend it enough.

Kapiti Island is a beautiful Island to visit to walk amongst nature and if you fit to walk to the top, a 2 hr walk but worth it for the views and to see birdlife on the way.
Lovely to take a picnic and enjoy a days outing.
There is a fee for boat trip and in summer it pays to book in advance.
