If your into birds and prepared to do a some hiking this is a great experience. We went over on the early boat (9.00am) and were dropped of at the Rangatira Flats area. After an orientation briefing we hiked up the trig track through mature native bush, stopping often to see a wide variety of bird life. Quite a steep hike but well worth it (about 1.5 hours to the summit). Came back down and were picked up by the boat and taken to North end where the lodge is located. Stayed overnight (had the cabin with in-suite facilities) which was very comfortable (only electricity is when the generators are on). Our host were fantastic - friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating. The meals including drinks and nibbles hit the spot. Great night walk Kiwi spotting. Did the northern walk next morning through less developed bush but with great views back over the lagoon. Caught the afternoon back to the mainland. Managed to see virtually all the birds (over 27 different breeds) that we wanted to see. We were lucky in that we had great weather the whole trip. Always a little bit of an unknown with the weather or lack of patrons preventing the ferry service from running but with a little flexibility this is not an issue. Highly recommend this for couple and families.
