“Wonderful Experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 6, 2011

Wonderful experience for me, a 50 year old woman!
Stayed a bit more than 1 month at Barnacles.
The hosts are perfect for their jobs:
Helpful, good with people, flexible, friendly and knowledgeable...
The place was always clean and organized but still homely
Right at a great beach!
Joint short term golf and (very friendly) tennis club (within walking distance)
I loved my time here.

seaside views, lovely location, very cosy, log fire, good kitchen, friendly staff and long-term residents (but not in a cliquey way).

Barnacles Seaside Inn is so much more than a hostel. When we arrived in front of this YHA associate, we could not believe our eyes: close to the beach, wonderful sea views, a well-maintained old boutique hotel meets English seaside holiday accommodation, and all that a YHA?

With its comfy living room, abundant tasteful decoration and photographs of decades past, it radiates a calm coziness and makes you feel right at home from the moment you walk through the entrance. Pictures and tales of the owners in the early 20th century, put up in the quaint little hallways, beckon guests to discover its history, leaving them ponder the mysteries described therein. The Seaside Inn has so much character, making it almost impossible not to like it.

Management was very kind, friendly and welcoming, reflecting the atmosphere of this boutique hostel. Our double room was nicely furnished, inviting and just the right size. It featured an older, but comfortable double bed, a sink and mirror, a beautiful wardrobe and a cabinet. We were provided with an electrical blanket and a radiator in case it got colder. The bathroom was just down the corridor and was very clean.

Unfortunately we only stayed one night, transiting from Wellington to Taupo. I would recommend the Seaside Inn for longer stays, too, as the location provides easy enough access to Wellington for those who want to stay outside the hustle and bustle of the city, and Paraparaumu itself has a few things to do and see and certainly makes for a great place to relax.

In short, what to expect:
a warm welcome by friendly staff in a place full of history and character
cosy living and dining room with well-equipped kitchen
independent travelers of all ages and nationalities
simple but thoughtfully decorated, charming private rooms with lovely views
plenty of free parking
great value for money

Just have to love this place. Found out about it from friends and it certainly lived up to expectations. Everyone was friendly and you really were made to feel like you were at home. It was like going to an English seaside inn. Had everything you would need and close enough to get to Wellington if you need to go there. The shopping mall in Paraparaumu has everything anyone would need. The beach shopping centre near by was also great and had lots of places to eat if you don't feel like cooking.

We got a double room and I loved the furnishings, it had alot more character than most hostels. It felt full of history, we had a nice bit outside out window that you could sit on too. Great views of the beach. Nice for a wee getaway.

this was a really nice little hostel. We had a Double room which was very cosy - with electric blanket and homely furnishings.

Paraparumu is a little bit of a quiet place, although a nice place to escape wellington for a night or two

Barnacles is a great place to stay if you want to break the drive after arriving into Wellington (its about 90 km north) or to enjoy afew days by the sea.

The hostel experience is like staying in your gran's house by the sea - all the rooms have a really homely, cosy, warm feeling and were clean and comfortable. Theres plenty of old pictures and books to look through as well as a super-comfy sittingroom with lots of DVD's and a toasty electric fire. The bathrooms were spotless, the owners incredibly friendly and helpful.

Exceptionally highly recommended!
