“Wonderful memories! ”
Reviewed January 22, 2016 for a stay in December 2015

My family of 5, including 3 children aged 14, 12 and 10 years had a lovely 2.5 days at the farm. Beautiful rolling hills, great weather and of cause, our lovely hosts, Shirley and Alan! They were always patient with our questions about farm life and so helpful when one of the children fell ill on day 2.

Shirley gave us gorgeous meals everyday. My favourite was our lunch on the picnic table in the garden. We loved to stroke the horse, collect eggs from the chicken house and bottle-feed the orphaned lambs! Alan took us out on his "mighty" tractor to give us a taste of farm life : herding the cows, milking them, chopping "naughty thistle" & firewood, mending fences, checking out the beehives, sheep sheering... we loved all of it. I also greatly enjoyed the bushwalk. The view at the top was worth the small effort. We were so impressed by the 3 dogs too, especially Joe, an amazingly fit dog with so many talents and affectionate to boot!

In all, it was a wonderful and memorable experience. Thank you so very much for your warm hospitality, Alan and Shirley!

“Wonderful hosts”
Reviewed January 8, 2016 for a stay in January 2016

Shirley and Alan were wonderful hosts. They welcomed us with tea, cookies and muffins. The home cooked dinner and breakfast were excellent and they went out of their way to show us everything that happens on the farm, from shearing sheep to herding cows. They were delightful and interesting. We would recommend this farm visit without hesitation.

“Absolutely magical!! Our highlight of NZ”
Reviewed December 14, 2015 for a stay in September 2015

Where do I even begin? Maungakawa Views farm is a very, very special place - from its amazing scenery, to the beautiful animals and even more beautiful hosts, Alan & Shirley. Alan's love of animals is a tangible thing that is beautiful to witness, and Shirley is so kind and such an amazing cook! I still dream about her farm-style sausages. Nothing will ever compare! I felt so emotional leaving, it was like I had found a new family.

I really hope I get to return there one day :) We often speak about our time there and we will cherish our memories forever!

“A slice of life at a farm.”
Reviewed November 15, 2015 for a stay in November 2015

An absolutely terrific experience throughout. My parents and aunts thoroughly enjoyed the fruitful, albeit short stay. We experienced almost everything that a farm can offer and the food, accommodation, showers and everything else were superb.
Shirley, I have a suspicion that you will be reading this out loud over the computer with Alan probably doing the dishes. You folks were terrific hosts and if possible, we would definitely come back.
The hosts offered a slice of life at their home, but I suspect we had a whole pie.

“Fantasic experience, excellent hospitality!”
Reviewed October 6, 2015 for a stay in January 2015

It was a memorable and fantasic farm experience in Shirley and Allen's farm! My two little kids just love it and they still talk about it a lot. My husband and I had a very enjoyable days there well. The rolling hills views are just what we after, location is convenient to the film scene, and more importantly, the hospitality is excellent! We absolutely love Shirley's cooking and enjoy the clean and cozy house. Will surely plan a visit again when the kids grow older :)

“Great experience with the best hosts”
Reviewed October 5, 2015 for a stay in March 2015

We stayed for 2 nights with Alan and Shirley and it was a highlight of our 5 weeks in NZ.
The Visitor Centre in Matamata gave us perfect directions and we loved following the road which wound its way through farmland till we arrived at the gate and followed the drive up the hill to find Shirley waiting for us with a warm welcome. Within minutes we were settled in and enjoying afternoon tea on the verandah overlooking the farm and the valley.

Alan soon joined us and after a cuppa and Shirley's cake we were invited to help with the usual evening chores on the farm - eggs to collect, chickens to be fed and watered, vegetables picked for dinner, dogs fed and a visit to a neighbouring farm to give hay to the cows. Shirley gave us a wonderful dinner and we enjoyed lively conversation till bedtime.

Next day we enjoyed looking all over the farm, tackling farm gates, watching the dogs move sheep, checking the beehives, picking mushrooms and all the time learning lots from Alan about farming in NZ. There was time later in the day to go for a walk close by through some amazing vegetation as we wandered up the hill.

We enjoyed another great dinner and more chatting but the fresh air and day's activities soon caught up with us.

Our room was very cosy and spacious and the bed was very comfortable, our meals were excellent, Alan and Shirley were terrific hosts. We'd stay again with no hesitation.

“Experiencing New Zealand, this is the best place to be!”
Reviewed September 7, 2015 for a stay in October 2014

My husband and I stayed at a few farm stay during our NZ visit, and this is our favorite among all. The cottage up in the hill gets the breathtaking views, a scenery that we would want to wake up to every morning. Shirley and Alan are the excellent host, super friendly and resourceful about the area.

The most memorable experience was riding on a tractor with Alan and his dog chasing behind us, up and down the hill as he took us to interact with the farm animals and showed us the daily farm works, and also took us to a relaxing bushwalk, and also sharing farming stories and how it is like working in the farm, etc. Something we find very interesting especially for people like us coming from the cities. Alan has also sheared a sheep for us, and I got to hold a baby sheep in my arms!

We especially enjoy the home cooked meals, Shirley is a great chef, I still remember the tasty meat loaf and scones! Shirley was so kind to show me the recipe so I can photograph it for future use.

All in all, we enjoy every moments during our stay, and unlike the commercial farm stay, Shirley and Alan only take one group of traveler at a time, and you will truly get to know each other on a personal level and this is something impressed us the most!

I would recommend this place to everyone who would like an authentic farm and country experience in New Zealand.
