I stayed in this motel with my younger sister. We've stayed in other motels, but this one was probably the best quality one. Even better than many hotels. It was very very clean, and had good amenities. Heaters (including heated blanket), great air conditioning, strong water, hair dryer, lots of towels, big tv, dvd player, etc. And the kitchen is sufficiently equipped. There is free wifi, but you're only given limited vouchers per day.

A small downside is that the motel is beside a highway, so you can hear cars 'whoosh' past. But it didn't bother my sleep at all. The motel is a walkable distance from the i-site, if you're planning to take a trip to the Hobbiton movie set. Most of the restaurants are also in that same area. But there aren't really any pedestrian crossings, so you just have to be careful.

The rooms were wonderful, but the staff weren't the most helpful or friendly. My sister and I aren't from NZ, and we don't drive, which meant that when it suddenly started raining on the morning we were supposed to walk to the bus stop, we were stuck. We asked the staff for help (where we could get an umbrella) etc, but they didn't really try to help us, and weren't too nice about it either. We were told where we could buy an umbrella, but the place wouldn't open til too late. Maybe I shouldn't expect them to, but I was just hoping they would be more helpful, but they weren't, and we got really wet walking in the rain. There's no public transport around Matamata.

Absolutely could not fault this motel. From the reception on arrival the experience was all positive. Well done .. We will be back. Can't say enough about you, and you can be sure we will be telling others. Apparently the receptionist is called "Happy".... That name is perfect for her. We travel heaps and this has to be high on the list for the cleanest and most comfortable stay. Thank you guys.

Room Tip: We stayed in room number 2. A 2 x bedroom unit.

We (3 couples) arrived at the Matamata Central Motel in the late evening on 28Aug2013. John the host offered us two studios and a one bedroom unit. The one bedroom unit costs a little more ($15-) but had a living room. As usual we played a little game to determine which couple would pay more and have the larger unit. John was amused but knew what we were doing. Anyway we had a little party and drinks there later that evening.

All the rooms we took were very clean and modern. Think the motel was about three years old and the newest in Matamata. We took room no.10 which was next to the State Highway and our friends took rooms on the opposite side. Obviously we heard some traffic noise from the road, but it was not loud at all and we did sleep well on very comfortable beds. The room was well heated too.

John told us where we could find dinner in the town centre and how to get to the Hobbiton Movie Set the following day.

Thanks John and cheers !

Room Tip: If you are a light sleeper, get rooms away from the highway.

We were very impressed by this motel , quite the best we have stayed in & we travel a lot in NZ & Australia !!
The owners certainly know how run an efficient motel-- the cleanliness, quality of linen, fittings, etc was of such a high standard & nothing was too much for the owners, so friendly & obliging to our requests.
Very well located , central to everything.
Thoroughly recommended & congrats to the owners & all the staff for running such a superb motel.

Myself and two friends were going to the Hamilton craft show, couldn't get booked up anywhere so we went further afield and travelled the extra distance to this motel in Matamata, I am so pleased that we did, the décor was lovely, it was spotlessly clean, a good sized kitchen with all the appliances needed ( sorry John, we loaded the dishwasher but forgot to switch it on.) and dining room, the bedrooms were roomy and comfortable and decent settee and chairs that were comfy for lounging on, I read reviews on this about traffic and train noise, I am a light sleeper and was a bit worried, no need to worry as they have double glazing and I slept like a log. We wish that we could have stayed longer, maybe next time.

PS John, the host was very helpful.

My family (hubby and two children, g8 b3) stayed at Matamata Central Motel from 6th to 8th June 2013. The room was spacious and amazingly clean, from the beds to the cutleries in the kitchen.
The motel was a 5 minutes walk from I-site and town center where the pick up point of the Hobbiton Tours was.
The motel, being a motor lodge, offers parking of our car right outside our room.
Special thanks to the hosts for the great hospitality, from advice on jogging route, laundry, to travelling tips. You guys are awesome!

I was pleasantly surprised at how good this motel was, and very pleased. Most of New Zealand's motels are clean but old and tired looking. This was very modern and exceptionally clean and within walking distance to the town and if you are visiting the Hobbit Movie set it is ideal place to stay. It is close to a railway track but I only heard one go past during our stay. I would definitely recommend to my friends.
