Opal Hot Springs And Holiday Park
Ranked #4 of 5 Hotels in Matamata
Reviewed September 10, 2013

The staff here are all very nice and friendly. The park is nice, although when we visited on a cold winters day, it was rather wet and muddy all over. Hot pools are nice! But the amenities! Please guys, tear them down and cut your rates down 50% while you build new ones! We have stayed in well over 100 holiday parks and campsites over the past 5 months and this place had, without any doubt, the worst toilets and shovers I have yet seen. Kitchen was also worn down as was the TV room. Not a place where I would let my kid watch a movie!

The park may not be the 5 star accommodation you are used to but is absolutely adequate and you get a hot shower and quiet night. We were in a motorhome and all sites are flat and accessible. The hot springs pools have to be seen to be believed. Worth staying here just to experience the hot pools and it feels like something out of a 1950's movie set. Five minutes out of Matamata and a great place to stay.

Room Tip: Experience the hot pools.

Nicer than it sounds ... three pools ... warm, hot and hotter. No frills, just plain swimming pools outside. Nice if you just want to soak and not pay for a spa. Locals there and camping types. Place is clean enough but not pretty.

Nice and friendly owners-managers but it is obvious that the place has seen better days and needs a good overhaul. Needless to say it was a bed and bathroom for one night only and it was sufficient for our needs.

I do not understand why this place does not tell you they are in an area that does not have good vodafone or telecom coverage according to Matamata Vodafone, instead they let you buy there special wifi online and it is useless. The pools are warm but not hot as I also read on another review. Also it could be the time of year or something but there were loads of flys everywhere and I borrowed some fly spray from a cleaner.

As the only campervan stop near Matamata choices are limited. The staff are quite friendly and helpful, but the facilities in general need a complete face lift. They are cleaned, but in my opinion not very well. The shower block had mould growing around the trims, and the paint work is flaking everywhere. Flys falling dead in the kitchen and a nice sign on the communal fridge door stateing they are aware of a camp thief but are obviously not going to to do anything about it. My suggestion is look at the group of campers now living there!
I had a look in the motel rooms, these are very dated, not uniform with each other so it's pot luck if you get a good or bad one and again not cleaned very well. We kept to ourselves in our camper but needless to say we won't be back.

This is the 6th year of staying at opal hot springs and we find it great! George and Rachel in their second year of running it have really made it a top place to camp. George went above and beyond to play with and entertain the kids, he is outstanding and they all cant wait to head back there next year.Very clean warm and relaxing pools.
