Hauraki Rail Trail - Day Rides

We decided to do as much of the Hauraki rail trail we could do in a day from Te Ahora, where we wanted to stay the night. From here we biked to Waihi and back, 100k starting at 11:00am and getting back at 7:00pm after a leisurely days activities. Really recommend the rail trail on this basis if a scenic ride takes priority over adventure for you. The 23k from Te Ahora to Paeroa (international guests must try the "world famous in NZ" local drink, L&P or Lemon and Paeroa) is very pretty and flat, but the highlight is the ride from there to Waihi. The famous section through the Karangahake Gorge is stunning, with an awesome 1k long tunnel to bike followed by a rail bridge with stunning gorge views. The climb on this section is 100m, but it feels totally flat as this is spread over many ks. The gorge is the most crowded section, but it is just a lovely up to Wahino station, where great old gold mining industrial remains can be explored, and you can ride the vintage railroad to Waihi. The next newly opened section is maybe the most enjoyable in some ways as the trail follows the riverside to Waihi. This section is not flat, but undulating and great trail riding. In Waihi we had a great lunch at the Orchard Café.
We'll be back to ride the gorge again and complete the Thames section for fun. The trail is free so be sure to donate to the trust if you can.

We did the 14km section of the trail from Wakino yo Paero, it was fabulous. Very scenic and includes the 1km tunnel. If you only have time to do one leg, this is it. We took just over 1 1/2 hours at a leisurely pace. Coffee at the Wakino railway station before the ride was good too.

A family of five (including a 22 mo, 4 yo & 10 yo) we cycled the hauraki rail trail in 3 days as recommended. We carried all our gear using paniers and a trailer, Would recommend making your life easier by using the shuttle service to transfer bags from one stop to the next. Definitely the best section was Paeroa to Waihi. Beautiful gorge, great 1 km tunnel with heaps to do. If your keen you can also take a splash in the Ohinemuri River. The other two sections Thames - Paeroa and Paeroa to Te Aroha are just countryside, with not much to divert your attention - sorry cow lovers! Probably not as great as the Otago Rail Trail, but still worth the effort.

I rode from Thames to Hikutaia and back. Although it was quite exhausting and hot, it was very enjoyable. I loved just going through the farms and countryside and seeing all the farm animals. One minor complaint is the large amount of gorse and prickles covering the trail especially in parts near Puriri. I really had to watch my tires.

I rode from Te Aroha to Paeroa, which is very easy riding, very flat, coming from Paeroa to Te Aroha is more scenic as you see the mountain.

Really enjoyed cycling from Paeroa to Waihi, its an easy ride, a few hills from Waikino to Waihi but nothing hard. Allow plenty of time as the highlight is biking in the Karangahake Gorge, and being able to do some walks, must have torch for the windows walk. Paeroa has some lovely gift shops. Waikino rail station is a great place to stop, for some thing to eat and toilet stop. Waihi is a buzzing little town. Short ride from station into waihi township.
