“Sherpa pick-up rip-off”
Reviewed April 6, 2013

Hi, If you use the haurakirailtrail.co....site and want to avoid the Sherpa pick-up rip-off, make sure that you declare that you are a family with kids under the age of twelve. We didn't and were charged twice the amount our friends were charged - no explanation, apology or refund were offered or received!

“Hauraki Rail Trail - a great holiday”
Reviewed April 6, 2013

Four of us enjoyed our 3 day holiday: (a) Thames to Paeroa. (b) Paeroa to Karangahake. (c) Karangahake to Te Aroha.

It was great to ride in the fresh country air away from the noise of traffic. Highlight was the Karangahake Gorge including a night ride between the Falls Bistro and the Golden Owl.

Look forward to more trails being developed across the country. Hope the Kaiaua to Thames trail isn't too far away.

Congratulations to the Hauraki Rail Trail Charitable Trust (- http://www.hauraki-dc.govt.nz/HRailTrail/

“Hauraki Rail trail”
Reviewed March 30, 2013

During 2 days over Easter weekend we cycled the rail trail from Thames to Te Aroha and back. Really nice ride, trail was well marked, well laid out and well looked after. Several places to join the trail; Thames, Paeroa and Te Aroha with bikes for hire at all three. Another spur runs to Waikino and Waihi through the gorge, which we didn't do this time, but is probably the best and most scenic part. Couple of places to stop along the way for food/ drinks, but would suggest you carry a drink with you, especially if it's a hot day.

Highly recommended for all ages and abilities. Visit http://www.haurakirailtrail.co.nz/ for details.

“Great Outing”
Reviewed March 22, 2013

The rail trail signs are easy to find. We cycled Te Aroha to Paeroa (22kms) to Waikino (14kms) and return in one day. We are experienced cyclists so found the flat terrain very manageable. Could have a few more distance markers en route. The ride from Paeroa to Waikino Station was pretty along the Karangahake Gorge and lunch at Waikino Station is superb. The trail is a wonderful bonus for the towns on the route and we look forward to exploring more of it.

“Don't miss the best part”
Reviewed March 16, 2013

The cycleways springing up around NZ are great and are to be encouraged and each has its own character. But it's better to under-promise and over-deliver. Use of terms like "spectacular" should be sparing and really worth it. Some of the Hauraki trail promo material in my opinion is not matched by the experience. Thames-Paeroa and Paeroa-Te Aroha sections of the trail are pleasant and attractive. The Karangaheke Gorge is definitely worth doing but the gem in my opinion is the bit that many might miss - the Waitawheta River off the gorge.

Day one for us was Thames-Waihi so we did the bridge over the gorge followed by the tunnel and the train trip to Waihi. On day two we rode by back roads and came out in the gorge right by the Owharoa Falls. When we hit the long tunnel coming back we detoured left via the gorge round to the Windows Walk. The trip along the narrow path beside the Ohinemuri River and then up the Waitawheta River on one one side and back on the other was great - scenic and interesting historically. Don't miss it.
