Mike's Camp, Kiwayu Island
Reviewed December 10, 2009

After 8 hours to Nairobi, then the Safarilink flight to Kiwayu, the 10 minute boat trip over to Mikes Camp on the island of Kiwayu, was sheer heaven. To arrive in this 'middle of nowhere' camp in the wonderful African heat felt like paradise. After a very warm and friendly greeting from Mike and Rosie, and having regained our breath which was taken away by the beauty of this camp, we were taken to our makuti hut on the hill. The breeze was very welcome with the hut overlooking both sea on one side and creek on the other. We loved the basic simpleness of the bathroom facilities, especially the double bath outside with views over the beach! The huts are large, airy and very comfortable with excellent views and completely private.
Our walk on the beach in the morning was stunning. No-one, as far as you could see in both directions, sharing the beach only with crabs chasing the waves. It was actually a shock to spot a person up the beach after lunch! And what a lunch it was. Mike certainly has got the best chef we have come across in Kenya. The food was fresh, delicious and beautifully presented. We were amazed by the sumptuous dishes produced in his kitchen. We had our lunch in the beach hut, and the stroll into the local village in the afternoon was great. Everyone was so friendly and welcoming, inviting us into their homes and sharing their ways of life with us. With a sundowner at the bar overlooking the creek, and the most amazing sunset we have ever seen, another delicious meal was presented to us to marvel over.
After early morning Yoga on the beach with Rosie and a snorkel on the reef, our stay at Mikes camp regrettably came to an end. We thoroughly loved this camp, and Kiwayu, and would not hesitate to recommend it to people who like something a little more 'real', and out of the way. Fantastic.

We really loved Mike's Camp on Kiwayu. It was so relaxing and beautiful and the perfect way to wrap up our trip. Initally, I was not totally pumped about spending part of my Kenyan vacation on the beach (my hubby wanted it) but this turned out to be a really wonderful place - not your standard beach vacation at all! First off, the Kiwayu beach is absolutely stunning - we had huge stretches of white sand and beautiful clear Indian Ocean to ourselves. At one point we walked for 45 minutes on the beach without seeing another person! An unexpected treat was that this also ended being a really great cultural experience (which is what I was looking for). We went to the local village and met some amazing young women who have launched an innovative business making art out of the flip flops that wash up on the shore.

As for the camp itself, the huts are amazing - made entirely from native materials, and all with beautiful views. We didn't mind bucket showers and manual filling toilets - but figured it was worth mentioning in case that's not your speed. One of the best parts of being on Kiwayu is hanging out with Mike - the camp's owner. He is a jovial host, full of great stories. The food is incredible - I would say the best we had on our entire trip. Nothing fancy but the freshest fish I've ever had!

There are a lot of places to visit in the world but Mike's Camp is high on the list of places I hope to get back to someday... (p.s. for those who are having trouble locating it, Kiwayu is an island several miles from Lamu - we got there by dhow from Lamu and left on a SafariLink flight to Nairobi)
